The victory, achieved by Jake Delhomme touchdown passes to tight ends Buck Moncla and Ryan McGrath and preserved by a swarming defense led by Conrad Lewis and Orlanda Thomas that limited a high-powered MSU attack to 3-of-14 third down conversions, broke a nine-game losing streak for USL. Coach Nelson Stokley's last victory came in 1992 against Northeast Louisiana, and the last time his Cajuns bested a Division 1-A team was 1991's win at Northern Illinois in a snowstorm. I think everybody who has followed us the last year and a half knows how special this win is for us, said Stokley. I've said all along we can be a good football team.

We've worked hard for this, and an open date couldn't have come at a better time for us. We're going to relish this one and enjoy it. I don't think many people truly believed we could come out here and defeat this team. The victory wasn't in the bag until wide receiver Marcus Carter fielded a Memphis State onsides kick with one minute to play, allowing freshman Delhomme to kneel on the ball twice for his first victory as a Cajun quarterback. The way he's been playing, there should be more wins to come.

Delhomme hit 19 of 27 passes for 222 yards and a pair of seven-yard TD strikes to his tight ends. He was not intercepted, and evaded pursuit well enough to suffer only one sack. He started like a house afire, clicking on five straight passes for 62 yards in a 78-yard, 11-play drive to open the game. A pair of 18-yard connections to Myron Robinson and Moncla fueled the march, and a 12-yard square-in to Carter set the Cajuns up on the MSU 18. A six-yard Ray Weathers run picked up a first down at the seven, and on the next play Delhomme stood tall against MSU noseguard Tony Williams and delivered while being smacked to the ground.

Instead Jones locked horns again with agent Richard Howell, who held Smith out as a rookie until the opener in 1990.

Jones admitted last week that he miscalculated the resolve of Smith and Howell. How could he, after what happened in the past? JUST when you thought Jones had learned a thing or two about public relations in the NFL, he has darn near ripped apart a champion. Just when he got Tom Landry to agree to go into the Ring of Honor, after firing the man and angering the faithful in 1989, he pulls this. Soon after trying to deflect some of the rift reported between Please see Line, B-3 revenge (sort of; the Cowboys still have those gaudy rings) in Texas Stadium, Lassie fumbled twice as typically tasteful Dallas fans chanted We want Emmitt! Afterwards, defensive end Charles Haley planted his helmet in the locker room wall and bellowed that the 'Boys couldn't win with a rookie running back. You don't want to anger Charles Haley.

Can't you just hear Lassie saying, Gosn, Chuck, I'm trying my best. I'm just not NO ONE IS, but it certainly took Dallas owner Jerry Jones long enough to realize it. When Buffalo's Thurman Thomas got a $13.5 million deal earlier this year, it set the stage for the showdown between Jones and Smith. How simple it would have all been had Jones simply trotted out a front-loaded, $14 million deal in DERRICK L2SSIC didn't get a penny of Emmitt Smith's front-loaded, four-year, $13.6 million contract signed last week with the Dallas Cowboys, but he acted like he had just won the Florida lottery. Thank you, Jesus, he told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Richie Whitt.

God is always on time. I'm the happiest guy in the building. I feel like I got lifted off my feet and I should should start doing somersaults down the hall. It's like a 10-tone truck was hanging over my head by a string, and I didn't know when it was going to fall. Now I can finally relax.

NOT TO MENTION go back to the Dallas bench after tonight's road game with Phoenix, back to the role for which he was drafted backup and safety net for the Cowboys' two-time NFL rushing champion. You've got to love Lassie's candor. When the Cowboys got run over by the Redskins in their season opener, Lassie carried for 75 yards and ran hard. But he wasn't Emmitt. He also didn't play linebacker when the Skins marched for 99 yards on Dallas, either.

LSU, which had a chance to get over the .500 mark for the first time under Curley Hallman, fell to 1-2 overall and 1-1. I saw enough dropped passes and passes in the air for them, to last me a lifetime, said Hallman, now 3-11 during his career at Tiger Stadium.

White filled Tiger Stadium with enough accurate passes to keep LSU's defense completely guessing and off balanced. Auburn finished with 554 total yards (265 rushing and 289 passing) and controlled over 37 minutes of the clock. Running back James Bostic rushed 13 times for 110 yards and a touchdowii while Steve Davis added 95 on 16 carries. Stan White played a good game and so did their whole offense, said LSU safety Anthony Marshall. Stan White showed us play action, and with their fakes, we have to react.

It was a catch phrase to commemorate LSU's pulsating last-second victory over Auburn a win that registered on the school's seismograph due to the force inside Tiger Stadium after the game-winning touchdown. But thanks to senior quarterback Stan White, it was Auburn who brought LSU back down to earth with a 34-10 Southeastern Conference victory here before a crowd of 71,936 here Saturday evening. This ranks right up there for Auburn since I've been here, said White. This is our first game on the road this season and playing an LSU team that came off of a w'in, we've got to be happy with the victory.

The Lions are also 2-0 but worried about preserving their undefeated status because of offensive troubles, especially close to the goal line.

Detroit's offense has gone six quarters without a touchdown and is 0-for-5 on its last five possessions inside the 10-yard line. We're struggling inside the 5-, 10-yard line, Sanders said. We've moved the ball. We just didn't score when wre got down close to the goal line. Mora worries the Lions will remedy that this Sunday unless the Saints defense returns to the form that made them so tough last year swarming, all-out football.

I'm getting worried, Mora said. What I'm talking about is intensity, hunger, enthusiasm for 60 minutes. Flying to the ball. bles the Saints defense doesn't normally experience. The Saints, who led the NFL in fewest points allowed for two consecutive years, gave up 52 in their first two games.

After an NFL-best of allowing only 154.4 yards passing per game last year, the Saints have given up back-to-back 300-yard performances. After allowing only eight passing plays of 25 yards or more in all of last season, they have allowed eight in their first two games this year. I take those stats and I don't even look at them, said Detroit coach Wayne Fontes. The only thing I look at is who won and how many points they gave up. You look at the Saints being 27th, and you can throw that in the wastebasket, because you know the Saints are one of the best defensive for 60 minutes, we're going to be in trouble.

Barry Sanders has rushed for more yards (5,674) and more touchdowns (52) than any other back in the NFL over the last four years. He is the fourth back in league history to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons. Despite a pieced-together offensive line last year, Sanders got 1,352 yards. Against the Saints, however, Sanders has had some of his worst outings. In 1990, he gained only 10 yards on 12 carries and last season he had just 36 yards on nine carries.

I would just like to have the opportunity to do what I do best, get out in the open field and run, Sanders said. That's been very difficult against the Saints. Look at the numbers, they speak for themselves. But this season the numbers tell of trou By MARY FOSTER AP Sports Writer NEW ORLEANS (AP) Less than 24 hours after the New Orleans Saints won their second game of the season, coach Jim Mora was told he did not look very happy for a man starting the year 2-0. Because I know we've got a long season to go, Mora said.

I'm already worried about the Detroit Lions. Extra worried because the Saints defease, the terror of the league last season, is ranked 26th after bombings by the the run-and-shoot Oilers and Falcons. We're playing, in my opinion, the best running back in football and a damn good football team, Mora said. If we don't swarm to the football this wreek, and play with intensity every down, snap to whistle.
