Mr. Foorhccs Farors the President's PoUcj. CORRESPONDENCE ON MEXICAN AFFAIRS. From Europe. NEW YORK MARKETS.

Etc. Correspondence on Mexican Affairs. Washikgtox, January 9, 1866V The President sent reports to the House of Representatives to-day in response to the resolution of that body relative to Mexican affairs. They embrace much diplomatic correspondence on the subject, and are mainly to the effect that there was indisposition on the part of the United States to recognize any other Government in Mexico excepting presided over by Juarez, with which wo have so long been on terms of amity and friendship. CONGRESSIONAL.

Wa8hisgtoi, January 9, 1866. In the Senate, Mr. Sumner offered a resolution to protect freedmen from being kidnapped and carried to Cuba and Brazil, there to be held in davery. He read a letter from persons in Alabama, 6tating that this is so, and remarked that federal officers were among the guilty parties. He moved that the Committee on the Judiciary be instructed to inquire whether any further legislation is necessary to prevent the revival of the slave trade.

Mr. Davis had no doubt that Yankees were opening the slave trade. They would do so if they could make money. Resolution adopted. Mr.

Wilson gave notice that he would on Wednesday next call up the bill to increase and fix the number of men in the regular army. After an Executive session the Senate ad journed. In the House, Mr. Voorhees made a speech en dorsing the President's policy of restoration, and combatting the evils of Stevens' theory that the Southern States by war had ceased to exist. He contended that, the war having ceased, obedience to the laws was the only guarantee to representa tion and, in conclusion, expressed himself against the decision of protection to domestic manufactures.

Mr. Bingham replied to Mr. Voorhees, declaring the sentiment he uttered was such as kept alive the rebellion, and asserted that the President was in accord with Congress. From Europe. Halifax, January 9, 1866.

The Canada, from Queenstown on the 24th, has arrived. There was no market on the 23d. The correspondence between Mr. Adams and Lord Clarendon, has been published. The for mer suggested that when the Shenandoah ar rived at Liverpool, the British Government should have taken some action in regard to her crew.

Lord Clarendon states that the crew were all for eigners, and that there were no British subjects onboard. The Fenian trials and convictions still con tinue. The London Qlobe highly eulogizes General Grant's report, as an ablet clear and modest document, and says it does full justice to his oppo nents. New York Market. Gold 1381. A New "Way to Dispossess Tbkants nt New York. The coroners inquest on the bodies of Rosa and Francis Gughay, who came to their deaths by suffocation caused tho fumes of coal gas from a stove was concluded a few days since. It appears from the evidence offered at the inquest that the premises No. 597 Grand street, were being improved, and the apartments occupied by the Gughay family were required to complete such improvements.

The agent of the landlord wished the family to move, but they de clined doing so. Finding persuasion of no avail, he ordered a mason to stop their flues with a stone, at the same time warning them ef the fact The smoke and gas from the stove being unable to nass ud the chimney, accumulated in the room occupied by the deceased, eausing their deaths. The jury brought in a verdict holding- the agent esponsible for the deaths of these two persons, and he will be held to await the action of the grand jury. T. Time.

M. Zir The Right Reverend, the Bishop of North Carolina, will administer the Apostolic rite of Confirmation at SL 'James' Church next Sunday night. The Case and McGill. Daring the latter part of the last 'fall, the two above mentioned citizens of Bladen, were tried hciore a military commission in this eity, upon the charge of murdering a man by the name of Sykes, from the same county. Mai.

McMillan and Mr. McGill, are gentlemen well known in their community as among the first in respecta bility, correctness of deportment, politeness and Kindness to all. i nVc do not know what sentence was passed upon them, but their numerous friends will be gratified to learn that Congress recently called for a copy of the proceedings in their case, and that recent reliable private information just re ceived, induces the hope and belief that all will well with them, and that soon we will have the pleasure of greeting them restored to their usual libcrtv. ef As. a general thing we don't like to bet in fact, we are decidedly opposed to all sorts of gambling but on this occasion we are willing to wager thirteen dollars, Confederate currency, that we can show more cats and mors kinds of Vats, in an area of seven feet square in the rear of the Dispatch" office, about 4 o'clock in the morn ing, than can be found on the same amount of territory in any other town in North Carolina, outside of Clinton.

We ain't going to bet against on on eats nary time for we lived there onc, and happen to know that if there is any one in all the used to be "so-called Confederate States" where cats do most congregate, Clinton is the place. But leaving Clinton out of the lists, wc will assert, without the fear of successful contradiction, that we saw the biggest pile of cats in the rear of our office yesterday morning, that owr came together in this country. Gracious, weren't they thick! From the huge Miittrs to the old maid's brhidle, there they were, firmly locked in one long, loving embrace, when one of our devils, without the fear of a eaf-astro-phe beforo his eyes, and against the peace and dignity of the harmonizing felines, shied a brick into tho covey, and such a far-erwauling and attering of cats was never seen in this town before. We fear, however, that they have only flisperscd until the arrival of reinforcements, and conGdently expect to see them massed this morn-ihc more heavily than ever. In the meantime, who will take the bet Capt.

E. J. Hale, Jk. We call attention to the card of Capt. E.

J. Hale in our advertising columns. He is now connected with the house of Romme, Dcnkle, Joiinstox fc dealers in hats, caps, furs, parasols, 570 Broadway, New York; and is prepared to receive orders for anything in their line. We bespeak for Capt. Hale a large patronage.

This is an unnecessary request to those who know him but to those who do not know him, we take pleasure in recommending him as a gentleman in whom they ran rely. Any order placed, in his hands, will be filled honestly and faithfully, and to the entire satisfaction of his patrons. The very soul of honor and integrity, he will never recommend an article above its value; and to any who may fa- vor hira with their patronage, we will guarantee satisfaction in every particular. iST" The train on the Wilmington and YVeldon Railroad which should have brought the Northern mail on yesterday ran off the track near Enfield, on its upward trip, and of course we hare had to content ourselves with reading none, else but papers South of this place. We presume that the regular train will arrive this morning, when all will go on smoothly as before." We are glad to know that no damage to passengers or car? resulted from the "running off this track." Everybody takes the Dispatch, and so does the enterprising- William-goat that ruminates arouud Market street, and the river front.

We saw Billy in the market yesterday, devouring with very much gusto, one of our Evening's edition, and have no doubt that he digested the entire contents with infinite satisfaction. We had heard of Sir William's fastidiousness before, but until the evidence of yesterday, was not aware that his taste was orthodox. Well, Billy's no iron-clad," but he's a knowing goat, and if he only progresses as he seems to promise, is bound to be rampant to the last. Bully for Billy. Watch Your Metres.

We would call the attention of those of our city readers" who are consumers of gas. to tho fact that the feeble light which is at present vouchsafed them will be entirely extinguished should they neglcet the precautionary measure of putting spirits of some kind in their metres during this extreme cold weather. But then, the question arises whether it will pay to put in the spirits, and wl.etheryou can get some that will not freer e. 1 We would suggest the propriety of buing Baker whiskey or alcohol, and putting it in immediately.
