2-3 LOSfPOC RECORD Dee. 19, 1966 M-A fin ab'ulatiori oua Dawson, Leads W' life in An I MIA yT By MURRAY OLDERMAN Second Team Offense bw ihe coaches of the American Football Lcau. ton and fullback Jim, Nance, also of Boston, who broke the league rushing record thi3 season. Shaw end Buoniconti have won place on every AU-AFL team chosen by the coaches since 1963. So has flanker Lance Alworth of San Diegp, who missed unanimous selection by one vdte.

Besides Dawson, Kansas City placed tight end Fred Arbanas, split end Otis Taylor (a sophomore sensation) tackle Tyrer, defensive end Jerry Mays, linebacker Bobby Bell and safety Johnny Robinson. The young Oakland Raiders. DEFENSE feW? "If rik.i otf Avr fijB. on the-all-league team. Denver, however, had twor.men on the second team linebacker John Bramlett and corner back Willie Brown.

The cpntinuing maturity of the AFL was evidenced the the presence of only'; one rookie, halfback Bobby Burnett of the Bills, on either the first or second teams. And Burnett rated his second team post be being among the league's top rushers all year, also pacing the defending champions. The average experience for the all league team is 5.1 years. And such men as tackle Ron Mix of San Diego, Robinson, guard Wayne Hawkins and center Jim Otto are AFL originals, dating back to the start of the league in 1960. They're all in the 27-28 age range, when a pro Is suppoed to achieve hij physical peak.

Like the Chiefs, who are virtually AFL-bred, they're also a strength of the young pro league. First Team Tom Sestak of the Bills, a perennial at defensive tackle, barely clung to all-league esteem. He was tied in the ballot tag-. by Houston Atwine, the fireplug pass rusher of the Boston Patriots. There was intense competition all along the defensive line, Mays of the Chiefs received the votes of eight of the i coaches in the AFL.

Verion Biggs, the lone New York representative on the squad, was a slim victor- over tough Larry Eisenhauer of Boston as Mays' mate on the flanks. The defensive secondary also featured close races. Butch Byrd of Buffalo nosed out Kent McLoughan of Oakland for a corner job. Both safeties Robinson of Kansas City and hardhitting Kenny Graham of San Diego were pushed by George Saimes "of Buffalo (a 19 65 choice) and Bobby Hunt of Kansas City. Denver, Houston and Miami failed to achieve representation V9 who finished second to the Chiefs in the Western Division, showed they're a- definite threat hi the future by trailing the Chiefs in all-league selections with five.

The surprise in their contingent was defensive tackle Tom Keating, playing his first year, with the Raiders after being traded by the Buffalo Bills. Their prowess also reflected in the best record in the AFL, the Chiefs landed four offensive stars and three defensive play ers on the two platoons picked for NEA, traditionally, by the nine head coaches of the league.

Quarterback Lenny Dawson, the guiding hand of the Kansas City attack, was a unanimous choice. This represents something of a comeback for the veteran quarterback, who last led his team to a championship in 1362. At 31, he is the oldest of the all-league selections. After we have a chance to get together and talk and he wants to try it, fine. But if he doesn't want to do it, we certainly wouldn't push it." Primary reason for the conversion would be to save Mantle's brittle legs. As much as possible, anyway. Another reason is Houk's natural preference to keep the same three outfielders in the entire game and: avoid line-up changes. Critics of the Mantle move argue he would be far more likely to injure himself at first base than In the outfield.

They point out-1 he'd have to make a lot of sudden starts and stops at the new position as well as stretch for bad throws. Houk says that is bogus reasoning. "I've seen him come in and stop short many times, like on line singles to center, and he always looked all right to me," claims the Yankee manager. "On the other hand, every time he gets hurt it seems to be on one of those long runs. And I certainly wouldn't expect him to be doing any of those fancy splits at first base.

(UPI) No one now is saying rookie halfback Mike Garrett of the Kansas City Chiefs is too small for professional football, ieasi of all the San Diego Chargers. The 5-foot-9, 195 pound Hets-man Trophy winner from the University of Southern California was a 20th round draft pick by the Chiefs last year, considered too small by most. But' after the death of Mack Lee Hill, Garrett suddenly became a valuable piece of property and the Chiefs outbid the Los Angeles Rams for his services. The little tank ran for 161 yards in leading the Chiefs to a 27-17 win over the San Diego Chareers Sunday, falling only three vards short of Abner Haynes' club record of 164 set in 1962.

"For those who've nlver done it, I can tell you It's a long way out there. Mikey is on his feet a long time and hff does a lot more running than you realize." Moving Mantle in from the outfield is not a revolutionary idea. The switch was discussed but never tried several times during Casey Stengel's tenure.

Mickev and Houk even talked about the idea themselves a year ago when Mantle discovered he couldn't throw and had to enter Mayo Brothers clinic for surgery. "What the heck, Mick," said Houk at the time, "if you can't throw, you still caa play first "I'd be willing to give. It a try," said Mantle. He says the same thing now. The reason Mantle says this is because he never has been a prima donna, he isn't about to become one now and besides, how does a guy really know what he can do until he does try? On a brief business visit here his home in Ddllas, Mickey said he in the paper" that the Yankees are planning to move him to first base but that they haven't officially him so yet. "Anything the ball club wants me to do is okay with me," said the trim-looking, 35-year-old veteran of the Yankees outfield. "I've never played first base before, but if they want me to give it a try, I will. I'll do anything to help." Mantle means it because that's the type ball player he Is.

And manager Ralph Houk knows he means it. "I haven't talked to Mickey yet about playing first, base, actually almost on purpose," said the Yankee manager.
