This encourages us to expect fair weather tonight, when if the computacions of astronomers prove true the comet will be at the nearest point to the earth and pre sent a beautiful sight. A meteoric shower is also expected as a result of the proximity of the comet. One astronomer, however, calculated a few days ago that the comet had already come tbe nearest that it would to the earth and was even then receding. At any rate look above tonight and see what you will see. A correspondent of the Wilmington Messenge-gives the following additional acts in reference to it About the year 1886 a novel and in teresting fact became well established, to wit That certain comets are followed by streams of meteors which move along the orbit "of the comet of that system.

And so it came to pass that, as it seemed certain that liicla comet had ceased to exist as such, it might appear as a stream ol meteors ami produce a shower on or about November 27th, 1872, the day when I he earth reaches the point in her orbit intersected by that ot tbe comet. And if so, the meteors would all rui bale from a certain point in space apparently situated 111 the con- tellalion Andromeda, the position of the point of the orbit of Biela' comet nearest the earth. Mr. II. A. Brown returned from Ral eigh here ho has been on a business trip. The Carteret Times says that Mr.

John Scawell while out fishing caught 8,600 croakers at one haul. At a meeting the State Executive Committee of tho Alliance, at Raleigh, it was decided that tho organization should never again meddle in politics. Good, il true, for it is its oaly salvation and if the Original purposes had been adhered to it would have accomplished great benefits. We trust that It is not too late for thei Alliance to yet regain its proper plans for work. He that lives upon hope will die fasting.

Hotel Zinzendorf, recently built by the West End Land Company of Winston at a cost of $140,000, was totally de stroyed by fire at 11 o'clock Thursday. the contents were mainly saved. Itie hotel was one of the best in the South. The fire originated in the rear of the building by the explosion of a gasoline stove in tbe steam laundry. A heavy breeze was stirring and the building being a wooden structure the llamcs spread rapidly.

The two fire companies were on hand but for lack of water were powerless. It required hard work to save other buildings. Insurance $100,000. Some of the furniture was saved but broken up. The trunks of several drummers and boarders were lost.

The build ing was owned by the West Knd Hotel Land Company, of which W. A. Whitaker is president. The hotel management was preparing, when the tire broke out, a Thanksgiving dinner which would surpass anything of the kind ever given in the city. Business men there say that this fire is the heaviest blow Winston has ever received.

Atj a meeting of the directors ol the West End Hotel and Land Company, held at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon, it was resolved to be the sense of the board to re-build the Hotel Zinzendorf as soon as practicable. 111. The steward's meeting for Hancock Street Methodist church has been changed from Wednesday night to Friday night to meet the convenience of some of the body. The confcrancc year is near to a close and every one of this body is expected to be present and do his duty to get all the financies in a good shape. Mt. Calvary Temple has been made much more comfortable by two good stoves and white washing all over in the inside and a good saw dust floor, and it is expected that a large audience will be there at Sunday-school at 9 a.

and at the mass meeting at 4 1-4 p. m. Some of the pastors in the city have promised to be there and take part. Rev. Jno.

F. Butt will preach for the colored people there on Monday night. Some white people will attend also. Baptist Mission Meeting. At 6:30 P.

M. Sunday the Baptist Church was taxed almost to its utmost capacity. Mr. John C. Whitty, of New Berne, who Is chairman of the Executive committee of the Atlantic Baptist Asso ciation, to which thif church belongs, was present to present the claim of association missions to tbe church.

Mr. Whitty is a man of sterling qualities, and in addition is an earnest Christian. He has held the position of chairman of the Executive committee for several years, and therefore has a thorough knowledge of the needs of the work, which he presented to the congregation in a very earnest speech of about 85 minutets, wuicli was attentively-listened to. At the close of his address he asked for individual pledges for the work; and with the assistance of the pas-, tor succeeded in getting $71.00 pledged. Carteret (Beaufort) Ti mes.

The Seed Law Unconstitutional. The Legislature, at its last session', made a law requiring that every package of seed offered for sale in the State should be stamped with the ar in which the seed were grown. A Wilmington dealer was arrested for violation of the law. It Sot into tbe Federal Courts and Judge off. of the United States Court of Ap peals, has decided it unconstitutional.

C. When an associated press telegram announced a few days ago, that Cleveland wa9 likely to spend a short vacation at Newton, N. C. a number of papers got it New Berne. This doubtless accounts for the coming of the letter.
