Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001 The Advertiser 5B College Football Joining the parade Kansas State spanks La. Tech Kansas State's quarterbacks had their own problems, leading coach Bill Snyder to replace starter Ell Roberson with Marc Dunn despite the Wildcats' 543-175 edge in total offense. Roberson was 6-for-8 for 107 yards and scored the Wildcats' first touchdown on a 1-yard sneak in the second quarter, but was replaced by Dunn shortly before the half as Kansas State was plagued by turnovers and poor clock management. After a safety gave Kansas State a 9-7 lead with 2:55 left in the half, Dunn completed 5 of 7 passes for 67 yards to set up Joe Rheem's 30-yard field goal as time ran out.

He came out after throwing two third-qiferter interceptions to Michael John Lenard, but Roberson lasted only one series during which he burned two time-outs on fourth-and-1 at his own 29. Roberson also spelled Dunn for one down later in the third quarter. Dunn threw an interception to Lenard on Kansas State's first drive of the second half, but John Simon fumbled after a 20-yard completion two plays later and Terence Newman returned it to the Bulldogs 25 to set up Scobey's first score. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -Josh Scobey ran for 113 yards, scored two second-half touchdowns and passed the rushing mark as Kansas State beat Louisiana Tech 40-7 on Saturday Both of Scobey's touchdown sweeps, a 2-yarder and a 16-yarder on fourth-and-1, came early in the third quarter as Kansas State (5-5) pulled away from a 12-7 halftime lead.

Scobey has 1.089 yards on the season, and his sixth 100-yard game of the year tied a school record set by Isaac Jackson in 1973 and matched bv J.J. Smith in 1994. Louisiana Tech (6-4), which had been scheduled to visit Manhattan on Sept. 15 until the terror attacks of Sept. 11 wiped out that weekend's major college football schedule can still win the Western Athletic Conference outright and secure a bowl bid by beating Tulsa next week.

The Wildcats held Bulldogs quarterback Luke McCown to 144 yards and a touchdown less than half his average of 339.8 yards on 16-for-36 passing. He was sacked twice and gave up two interceptions before being lifted in the fourth quarter for Maxie Causey. (AP) Tulane has given up a lot of points this season and Southern Mississippi was glad to add to the total. Jeff Kelly threw for a school-record 400 yards and DaWayne Woods scored a career-best four touchdowns to lead Southern Miss to 59-6 win Saturday over the Green Wave. The Golden Eagles (5-3, 3-2 Conference USA) remained in the hunt for a fifth straight bowl bid. "It would mean a lot for this school, but I want it specifically for the players," said Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower. "And of course, we have to go out the next three games and earn it." Tulane (3-9.

1-6) finished the season with three wins for the second straight year and set the C-USA record for most points allowed in a season with 495. The previous worst was 456 by Cincinnati in 1996. Southern Miss scored on its first five possessions. Woods scored on 1, 3, and 4-yard runs while also hooking up with Kelly on a 38-yard touchdown pass. James Walley had a 1-yard run that made it 21-0 with 53 seconds left in the first quarter.

Chris Scelfo is 13-22 at Tulane since being hired following Tommy Bowden's 12-0 season of 1998. Southern II. 43, Prairie View 28 BATON ROUGE (AP) -Backup quarterback Quincy Richard passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more in leading Southern University to a 43-28 victory over Prairie View in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game Saturday The come-from-behind victory by Southern (7-3 overall, 4-2 SWAC) was the Jaguars' 11th in a row over Prairie View (3-7, 2-5), which scored 28 points in the third period to take a 28-23 lead heading into the fourth period. Richard, a sophomore who replaced starter Anthony Fisher in the first period, threw touchdown passes of 33 yards to Drayton Bridges, 20 yards to Al'Trevion and 16 yards to Roderick Jones. Austin 17 NATCHITOCHES (AP) Jeremy Lofton ran for a career-high 169 yards and three touchdowns Saturday as Northwestern State dashed Stephen F. Austin's hopes for a Southland Football League title with a 31-17 victory over the Lumberjacks. Lofton, a junior who carried 27 times, had touchdown runs of 66, 15 and 1 yards and Clint Sanford kicked a 22-yard field goal to stake Northwestern (8-3 overall, 4-2 SFL) to a 24-7 lead midway through the second period. The victory enhanced Northwestern State's chances for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division 1-AA playoffs. The loss in its last conference game of the season knocked SFA (6-4.

4-2) out of a first-place Southland tie with Sam Houston State, which beat Southwest Texas 31-13 on Saturday, and out of the conference title picture. SFA scored on a 24-yard pass from Wes Pate to Lawrence Hamilton following Lofton's first period touchdown runs to narrow North-western's lead to 14-7, but its comeback bid crumbled after Kuecker from 20, 39. and 35 yards to round out the scoring. 27 THIBODAUX (AP) Slade Nagle threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Britt Broadhead on the first play of the final period to rally McNeese State to a 34-27 victory over Nicholls State and keep alive the Cowboys' hopes for a Southland Football League championship. McNeese (7-3 overall, 4-1 SFL) must now beat Jacksonville State next weekend to earn a tie for the conference's regular season title with Sam Houston State, which finished at 5-1 Saturday with a 31-13 Southland victory over Southwest Texas. Nagle's game-winning pass to Broadhead came just 3:11 after Nicholls tied the game at 27-all on a 20-yard pass from Josh Son to John Price. The Cowboys then moved 51 yards in eight plays for the winning touchdown. McNeese never trailed, taking a 21-7 lead in the first period on touchdown runs of 2 and 9 yards by Luke Lawton and 5 yards by Vick King.

John Marino also kicked field goals of 25 and 20 yards for the Cowboys. King finished with 111 yards on 20 carries and Lawton had 97 vards on seven carries. Craig Nail gave the Demons a 31-10 lead with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Bernard Green with 2:42 left in the first half. Both Nail and Green set Northwestern State career records. Nail completed 17 of 26 passes for 213 yards, giving him 2,022 passing yards for the season 56 more than the 1.966 gained by Scott Stoker in 1966.
