PLATFORM WAS PEACEFUL That Is Until Willkie Mounted It to Say "Thank You" PHILADELPHIA, June Republican platform (the one that was built-not the written one) was a peaceful place until Wendell Willkie, the nominee for the presidency, mounted it to say "thank you." At once it looked for all the world like a prize ring, and posts and ropes could be seen with only a faint strain of the imagination. When Willkie arrived at the auditorium yesterday afternoon during rainstorm, the crowd cheered as lustily as for a new "champ." Tunney calls a pugilist as he went striding from one side of the platform to the other, waiving his hand to acknowledge the applause. During the marathon of the nominating Senator Taft speeches, had Ohio loosed supporters, of balloons from the ceiling of the vast auditorium, and in Willkie's hour of triumph his friends arranged for more balloons and added confetti. Not only did the balloons float down but the confetti in great volume came charging fromthe vents of the air conditioning system. Even a presidential candidate 1s not immune when confetti is in the air.

As the husky Willkie, turned to face the cheering crowd, he wa3 liberally sprinkled with it, many of the bits of red paper sticking to his perspiring face. This added to the ring touch. for the red splotches might have been welts from blows. But, he wore the broad smile of the winner. Chairman Joe Martin rushed forward to greet Willkie- referee about to raise the hand of the the Where to Dine Sunday, June 30th FRESH ROAST TENDER CHICKEN i 55c INDIVIDUAL T-BONE Golden Brown Southern Waffles STEAK Giblet Gravy DINNER Creamy Mashed Potatoes Garden Home Fresh Made Buttered Rolls Peas 70c Silex Coffee or Iced Tea SPECIAL DINNERS Choice of Desserts SERVED ON JULY 4TH CABL J.

Martin knows more about the floor of the House of Representatives than does about fight arenas, and did not have quite the touch for raising a pugilist's hand in token of victory. He lifted it, but he did not release his firm handshake. This left the situation a bit confused, and a regular "third man in the ring" would have been ashamed of the result. It la barely possible, however, that nether of the principals knew that the situation left anything to be desired. "Now I'm going to sleep for week" was the nominee's parting words, but he left the ring to do it.
