Mr. Williams added, "The sale of hardcover books has been overwhelmingly high and our customers purchase books in all categories." Arboretum plans trip to Washington The Hartshorn Arboretum is offering a 1-day bus trip to the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. to view the Treasure Houses of Britain. The bus will depart Stone House at 7 a.m. February 8. Limited seating on the bus and passes for the record1-ed tour are available through the arboretum, 376-3587.

This trip was originally scheduled to be made by train, however, due to the overwhelming response, a bus will take the group door-to-door. Leaving Washington at 5 o'clock, the bus will stop at the New Castle Inn, Delaware, for dinner before returning to Stone House later that evening. The cost of the trip is $70. "The sale goes on forever," is Encore Books manager Paul Williams' response when customers ask when the grand opening will end and when prices will increase. Located on Morris Turnpike in the former building, Encore's opening marks the first time in many years that a bookstore has been located any place in the township other than the Mall at Short Hills.

The store, which opened the day after Thanksgiving, is able "to bring best sellers within easy price range of most people," said Mr. Williams. Founded by David Schlessinger while he was a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania 10 years ago, Encore Books operates 25 stores in the Philadelphia area and two other stores in Springfield and Chester in addition to the township store. Mr. Williams said the Morris Turnpike store "is a new concept for our company since we are able to offer our customers services that would now be found in most bookstores." In addition to selling hardcover and paperback books, the store also carries calendars, magazines, stationery, gift wrap and greeting cards.

A unique feature of the store is that it offers discounts of 35 per cent on hardcover books on The New York Times' hardback bestsellers list and 25 per cent on The Times' paperback bestsellers list. Drawing mainly from the township and Summit, Encore also attracts business from people "who don't want to fight the hassle of finding a parking space at the Mall at Short Hills," said Mr. Williams. A The store manager also said he' was impressed by the reading habits of area residents "since people in the Sixteen township residents will perform with the Chatham Com-, munity Band as it presents its winter concert Sunday at the Chatham Borough Public Library at 3 p.m. The residents include Jan Bowen on flute and Peter Dykema on French horn and the following students: Andrea Alexander, Wendy Gwirtzman, Cathy James and Jessica Marks on flute, Dave Schwartz on oboe, Jon Zissu on clarinet, Dan Gitner, Greg Zissu and Nicholas Sanfilippo on sax, Geoff Hader on bass clarinet, Ian Warren and Andy Gordon on trumpet, Warren Phillips on tuba and Jeff Green-wald on percussion.

The guest soloist for the concert will be John Leister a graduate of the Juilliard School, where he majored in percussion. He is a freelance artist in the New York City area. Mr. Leister will be a xylophone soloist in Norman Leyden's "Serenade for a Picket Fence" and then will turn to the set for Carroll DeCamp's "Concerto for Drum Set." Mr. Leister's father, John Leister, teaches elementary instrumental music in the township schools and recently toured the elementary schools with a professional percussion ensemble.

The Sunday program will also include lighter medleys and serious band literature including Frank Erickson's "Toccata for Band." A Dixieland combo, composed of members from the band, will be highlighted in Bob Lowden's arrangement of "Dixieland Jam." There will also be a medley titled "Sousa!" arranged by Warren Barker. The band is directed by Stanley West, a professional clarinetist and director of bands at Millburn High School. The public is invited and admission is free. College corner Charles Bede Schneider Jr. of 155 Tennyson Drive has received a bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware.
