The stock OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Citizens of Goldsboro! Read, Reflect, and Do Your Duty. Goldsboro is well said to be the cross roads of Eastern Carolina. It is the center of busines activity in this portion of the State. Our merchants are wide-awake, progressive men.

We have a fertile country to support our trade and each year our business extends itself further into the surrounding country. Our population has grown, every branch of business has increased stores have multiplied, dwellings and homes have become more tasty, and prosperity is. in fact, evidenced on every hand. This cannot be denied. It shows a good state of affairs and speaks well for the energy and push and pluck of our citizens.

And pray tell us how has all this been accomplished, and in 'ppite of the general stagnation in trade and universal cry of "hard times?" We venture the assertion, and challenge contradiction, that the establishing the Graded School in 1SSI gave more impetus and tone to the general welfare and progress of Goldsboro than anything else that can be pointed out. Shall all this be wiped oat? Are our citizens prepared to go back to the dark side of Goldsboro existing before 1SS1, wheu over 300 bright but poor children, who have since had the blessing and benefits of the Graded school, were growing up in ignorance, idleness and sin Shall we surrender the proud reputation Goldsboro has attained during those few years the reputation and notoriety for its ex his lecture on "The Raven and Its DYSPEPSIA Up to a few weeks ago I considered myself the champion" Dj-speptie ot America. Daring the years that I have been afflicted I have tried almost everything claimed to be a specific for Dj-spepsia in the hope of finding something that would afford permanent relief. a 1 is best for the interest of Goldsboro that it be permitted to go down: 1. That no town or city can prosper without good public schools; that no town or city in the civilized world was ever built up without public schools; that when a community points out its advantages and prosperity, the first thing pointed at with pride is its schools and school buildings. Goldsboro cannot be an exception. 2. That the Graded School building in Goldsboro is an ornament to Goldsboro and a public institution that we all can point to with much pride.

No other town in the State can boast of better school property. The property is owned by the township and its title is vested in the school board. The property, besides its magnificent and spacious buildings, consists of about 9 acres of desirable ground, which in course of time will be very valuable. 3. The property cost originally over $20,000.

It was indeed generous on the part of those who owned the stock that they sold the property to the school Board for only $10,000, taking payments in bonds bearing interest at 7 per cent a year, payable in ten years. The property oueht to be kept tor school purposes. The pride of Goldsboro and of the township demands this. It could not to-day be built for less than $20,000. 4.

Our motto is No Cure No Pay zens the parent who feels that the education of his children rests with him will you, say we, drive that class of our pcpalation away from Goldsboro, or would you not rather extend a welcome hand to all such to come and reside among us? Would you thrust hundreds of bright children who are thirsting for an education that will enable them to become better men and women, again into the cold darkness of ignorance? We are speaking plainly, for the time to speak has come. Let it not be said again that "Goldsboro will not educate her children." We have heard it too long already. The city has suffered for it'in the past, and ought to suffer for it again if the school be wiped out.
