By BRUCE BROWS A dvertiser Sports Editor That was the greatest comeback I have ever seen in college football." USL Head Football Coach Sam Robertson had right to speak so in the delirious USL locker room Saturday night at Cajun Field, after his Cajuns erased a 26-0 halftime deficit and scored a 40-26 Homecoming 1982 victory over the Northeast Indians Not since 1976. when USL bounced back from 26-10 down to defeat Louisiana Tech 31-26, has there been such a rebound from despair as that chalked up last night to the delight of 25.133 fans And leading the way in that rout was senior quarterback Dwight Prudhomme, who outshone highly -touted NLU quarterback John Holman by hitting an amazing 22 of 31 psses for 344 yards, scoring the first USL TD on a 60-yard quarterback sneak, and totalling 398 yards in offense while throwing two TD passes Those among the throng who left at halftime are kicking themselves today, because they missed the finest, most dazzling, comeback ever at Cajun Field It looked like anything but a victory in the first half, but by game's end those who stayed knew they had witnessed a minor miracle. The Indians, who had threatened earlier in the first period only to have the Cajuns' Gaylord Paul intercept a Holman pass intended for Tag Rome from the USL 16 in the end zone, struck suddenly for the night's first score USL's Don Wallace was back to pass when NLU rover Lee Everett slammed him on one of the Indians' patented stunts, causing a fumble that was covered by Phil Brewer at the Cajun 43. Wallace wobbled to the sidelines, trying to name the day's date and Holman wasted no time going up top Rome ran a streak route and Holman laid the ball well out in front too well out in front it seemed Not for Rome, who launched himself at the two and sailed close enough to snare the bomb with an amazing fingertip grab to climax a 43-yard TD detonation There was 1:25 to go in the opening period, and USL fans were quickly alerted to the scoring power of the Indians The score had to be of particular satisfaction for Rome, whose 1981 season was ended with a broken collarbone suffered against USL in last year's meeting in Monroe Then the Cajuns' night turned sour as Clarence Verdin injured a knee and broken collarbone i out for the year1 on the ensuing kickoff return NLU was soon in double digits Ben Simmons put the leg to a 46 -yard field goal to make it 10-0 with an even 10 minutes to play in the first half On the next series, with Prudhomme in for Wallace at quarterback, the Cajuns faced a fourth and one at their 43, and gambled for a momentum-changing first down The gamble failed when Thomas Jackson was nailed for a yard loss Holman took this as his cue to go for the jugular, just as he had done earlier following Wallace's fumble He air-mailed as he led six straignt scoring drives to pace the remarkable Ragin' Cajuns to a 40-26 homecoming triumph before 25.133 fans at Cajun Field Staff Photo Bv Piazza I SIMPLY AMAZING USL senior quarterback Dwight Prudhomme I 12 1 had the kind of night players dream about but rarely experience Saturday night against the Northeast Indians the ball to Alfred Kinney, who streaked down the right sideline and gathered in a 40-yard pass before drifting out of bounds at the USL two. After a one-yard penalty.

Greg Huskey plunged a yard to make it 17-0 with 7 55 still to go in the half The Cajuns, helped by a 23-yard draw play by Wendell McKay and accompanying 15-yard penalty, stopped themselves again when a Wallace pass was stolen by Ronnie Washington and returned 38 yards to the USL 33 A penalty on the play put the ball on the 18 and Holman went right to Dewayne Robinson over the middle for the easy touch A missed extra point kept it at 23-0, but there was soon more Another pickoff of Wallace set up a 47-yard Simmons field goal to make it 26-0 The game went from bad to worse as the half ended Prudhomme hit five passes in the final 123 before intermission the biggest being 17 yards to Jackson to the NLU 38 and 23 yards to Doug Waddell to the 15 to get into range for some points Oscar Speer lined up a 27-yard field goal to end the half, but the center snap sailed over his head and he had to try a pass after retrieving the miscue In keeping with the half, the aerial fell into enemy hands In one half of play, Cajun players were dropped for lost yardage 11 times for 50 yards In 27 first-half rushes. USL netted 17 yards In 30 minutes of football, eight penalties worth 80 yards were called on the home club Holman who missed his first four passes before hitting fittingly enough Rome to break the string, hit 12 of 25 passes for 174 yards and two scores before the break If not for Paul kickoff pickoff, things would have been worse Of course, now and again a stunting defense like that employed by NLU can open the door to big plays by the offense as quickly as it can for the defense Such an occurance took place place midway through the third quarter and provided some warmth for chilly Cajun fans Prudhomme broke clean behind a trap block over left guard, a call catching the Indians in another stunt, and the senior from Lafayette High was soon using his 4 7 speed to outleg the Indian defense for an unlikely 60-yard touchdown romp with 7:13 show ing on the third stanza clock A two-point conversion run around left end, again by Prudhomme, cut it to 26-8 and kindled a faint glimmer of hope for the home crowd. Hopes glowed brighter moments later when, after a 43-yard Feotis Moore run to tne USL 31 set up an apparent 42-yard field goal try by Simmons, a fake and a shovel pass to Moore lost five to the USL 30 Thus invited to get back into the game, Prudhomme went back to work. His 13-yard pass to Dutnell got one first down at the USL 48. and a 14-yarder to Greg Hobbs reached the NLU 38 for another first Then Prudhomme went over a vacated middle another stunt turnaround to tight end Mike Hoffman, who rolled 28 yards to the 10 On the next play.

Hobbs twisted backwards to accept Prudhomme's 10-yard TD pass Going for two again. Prudhomme shot up the middle on the same call that he scored from 60 on. and with 1:43 to go in the third it was 26-16. Indians That scoring drive was 70 yards in a brisk seven plays. When the two teams went to the final stanza, there was suddenly a whole new outlook to the 1982 Homecoming The faint glow became a roaring flame of frenzy before the fourth period was three minutes old, as Prudhomme continued to ride a hot streak His 32-yard pass to Hobbs reached the NLU 38 on the first play of the quarter, and his 29-yarder to a diving Steve Thompson got it to the Indian nine No TD was in the offing, but Speer did (Continued On Pat 34) BEHIND STOUT DEFENSIVE EFFORT LSU Tigers Shock Crimson Tide BIRMINGHAM, Ala APi LSU's defense came to Birmingham yielding just 193 1 yards a game and leading the nation, but the critics pointed out they had played only one team with a winning record and three which hadn't even won a game Now, LSU has played someone and proved something The lightning-quick defense stonewalled Alabama without a first down in the first half, freshman Dalton Milliard's 16-yard touchdown run triggered a 17-point second period and the llth-ranked Tigers put down a third-quarter rally to defeat No 8 Alabama 20-10 Saturday The victory ended 11 years of LSU frustration against Alabama, gave the Tigers a 7-0-1 record and should have served to convince the skeptics rushing Alabama actually rushed for 91 yards, but its ball-carriers were tackled nine times behind the line for losses amounting to 46 yards The triumph also boosted LSU's Southeastern Conference mark to 4-0-1 and kept its Sugar Bowl hopes very much alive Alabama is 7-2 overall and 4-2 in SEC play, only the second time since 1970 Bryant's club has dropped more than one conference game in a season and just the third time in that stretch it has lost more than one regular-season contest I think that's the best beating we've had since the '60s," Bryant said 'We started out playing defense well enough to win, if the offense gave us any help But the offense never did, except a little while in the third quarter.

"LSU had the superior team, and 1 know-that they had the best coach They were better prepared Their line of scrimmage ate ours Their defensive line of scrimmage ate our offense. I didn't think anvone could do that turned back a third-quarter rati to defeat No. 8 Alabama 20-10 Saturday. The Tigers then took advantage of two of Alabama's four lost fumbles to score twice in the final 58 seconds of the half on Alan Risher's 3-yard pass to tight end Malcolm Scott and a 23-yard field goal by Juan Carlos Betanzos five seconds before the intermission LSU's defense had allowed its first seven opponents an average of 193 1 yards per game js in the country, and was thirdin rushing defense with a yield of 59.6 per Bear' Reacts To LSU Win On Page 38 NE Louisiana 7 If 0 0-24 SW Louisana 0 0 It 24-40 NE Rome 43 pass 'rom Hoiman Martin Rich NE FG mmors 44 NE-Husney run Martinkick) NE- Rob'nson ilpass'rom Holman a iec NE-FG Simmons47 Syv -Prudhom me 60 fUn Prudhom run SAf-Hobos 1 1 pass 'ro Pr jdhomme Prudhomme unt S-fg Soee' Sw core' '0 'un Speer 4'Ck I Prudhommp Spefrl-ck) SW-jackson iCrun SDeerkicli A-35 133 NELa SWLa Firs? downs 13 Rushes yards 33 44 57 1 60 Passing yards 314 390 Return yards 41 50 Passes 30 51 3 36 39 4 Sacks by 3 30 3 24 Punts 32 5 34 Fumbles lost 0 0 3 1 Penalties yards 112 12 110 Time ot Possession 36 07 33 53 game They showed why in the first two periods, thoroughly embarrassing the Crimson Tide's supposedly potent Wishbone attack Alabama, which ranked fourth nationally in total offense and rushing with averages of 446 2 and 300 5 yards respectively, managed only 10 ards on the ground in 15 carries and 22 more through the air Alabama had the football eight times in the first half and the only time the Crimson Tide was in LSU territory came after a fumble recovery at the Tigers 39. but three plays netted only four yards Alabama scored all its points in a 25-second span of the third period on Peter Kim's 31-yard field goal and a 28-yard pass from Waiter Lewis to Joey Jones But a 20-yard field goal by Betanzos sealed LSU's triumph with 10 41 left to play After both sides wasted scoring opportunities following first-period fumble recoveries. LSU uncorked its 90-yard march, a drive that lasted 6:46. Risher, who completed 20 of 26 passes for 182 yards, contributed a 10-vard bootleg and a 12-yard pass to Scott Hilliard rambled 33 yards with a Risher pass, breaking several tackles along the way, and cracked the left side for four yards and a key first down at the Alabama 17.

Two plays later, he circled left end with a pitchout and Betanzos' kick made it 7-0. LSU's defense continued to befuddle Alabama, taking the option pitch away from Lewis. Ken Coley replaced Lewis with 5:37 left in the second period, but Joe Carter fumbled on the first play and free safety Liffort Hobley recovered at the Alabama 27. LSU used nine plays and more than 4 1-2 minutes in covering the distance, including Risher's 10-yard for a first down at the 16 After his TD pass to Scott, Alabama's Craig Turner fumbled Betanzos' high kickoff, and LSU's Alvm Thomas recovered at the 30 Betanzos' first field goal made it 17-0 five seconds before the intermission Alabama got the Legion Field crowd of 77.230 excited when Linnie Patrick ran for 14 yards and the Tide's initial first down on its first plav of the third quarter Thev had to settle for Kim's field goal, but Hilliard fumbled on the first play after the kickoff following a screen pass from Risher and Al Blue recovered for Alabama at the LSU 28 On the next play. Lewis lofted a perfect pass to Jones, who got behind cornerback James Britt in the end zone and it was 17-10.

But with Risher directing the attack smartly, the Tigers controlled the ball for all but 6:04 of the final 22 43 and its 11-game losing streak against Alabama was history. You can't understand what it's like to get hit in the mouth 11 years in a row," said LSU Coach Jerry Stovall 'This is without a doubt my biggest win It hasn't really-soaked in yet, but I think it will pretty good when it does." Stovall had an even more profound observation, one with which Alabama's Bear Bryant surely will agree "Our defense played well, and you build championship teams with defense," Stovall said. All LSU's defense did was thoroughly embarrass Alabama's vaunted Wishbone attack, holding the Crimson Tide to just six first downs and an unheard-of 45 yards ON THE WAY TO A TOUCHDOWN Mississippi's James Harbour i left I grabs a pass on his way to a touchdown Saturday night, eluding Tulane defender Tyrone Smith (11) in Jackson. Miss AP Laserphoto i Linebacker Thomas Hubbard intercepted Brister's pass on the next Tulane series and the Rebels drove down for a 32-yard field goal by Todd Gatlin and a 31-14 lead at the end of the third period The Rebels added insurance touchdowns in the last quarter on the Austin-to-McGee pass play, and a 1-yard plunge by fullback Arthur Humphrey. Thomas, a 214-pound tailback, scored touchdowns on Mississippi's first two possessions He raced 18 yards for one on the Rebels' 78 yard opening series and earned the second on a 6-yard sprint around right end after safety Johnny Burrow recovered Tulane tailback Timmy McCray's fumble at the Green Wave 42 The Rebels went ahead 21-0 early in the second quarter when Harbour escaped behind the Tulane secondary, caught Austin's pass in stride at about the 15 and ran in for the touchdown.

The play came after linebacker James Otis had intercepted quarterback Mike McKay's pass one of four first-half turnovers that haunted the Green Wave Then Brister came on to revive Tulane hopes, leading Tulane to touchdowns on two of its next three possessions Bnster finished with 147 yards on 13 of 25 passes and rushed three times for 170 yards The Green Wave had two second quarter chances that were ruined by turnovers. We had trouble picking up their blitzes and stunts "But we made some adjustments at halftime and the offensive line really started picking up the stunts and really moving people out Northeast has a helluva team." So did the Cajuns in that second half. Said Robertson, 6-3 entering next week's game with Louisiana Tech, added: "The key was picking up their stunts and giving our quarterbacks time to throw, because we had people open in the first half Dwight did a great job of picking up stunts and checking off. He called that quarterback sneak for a touchdown.

That was his call "I told the players at halftime that regardless of the outcome I still loved them. Their mothers still loved them I wasn't too sure about their girlfriends but I told them the only way they could love themselves would be to go out and play that second half like they could Led by Dwight Prudhomme in full bloom, the Cajuns did just that. By BRUCE BROWN A dvertiser Sports Editor This is the happiest day of my life." USL senior quarterback Dwight Prudhomme. slumped over from exhaustion and from the weight of his performance just moments before, was describing his other worldly night against the Northeast Indians Prudhomme came on in relief to hit 22 of 31 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns, rushed 60 yards for the first USL score of the night, totalled 398 yards in total offense, scored two two-point conversions, and in general was amazing as he brought USL back from 26-0 down at half with 40 second-half points Not since Prudhomme's high school days at Lafayette High had he enjoyed such singular glory, and the memorable moment came one week after a pivotal interception at Southern Mississippi might have broken lesser folks "I'd like to say this about Dwight," said Head Coach Sam Robertson "Many would have folded their tent after the adversity he's faced But, he kept hanging in there, kept fighting and fighting "And, this last week after that game at Southern Miss, he was a senior leader all week long no looking in the past And it paid off tonight "It all came together for us in the second said Prudhomme "Everybody played like we are capable of in that second half It's incredible the turnaround not LSU Scott 3 pass trom Risher Betanzos 'Ck 1 LSU-FG Ala-FG Kim 31 A la -J Jones 21 pass trom LewiS (kirn kick) A- 77 230 Miss- Thomas II run (Gltlin kickl Miss-Thomas 6 run (Gatim kick' Miss- Harbour 55 pass from Austin Gatlin kick I Tui- Veals 1 run (Wood kicki Tul-Slopher33passtrom Brister (Woodk.ck) Miss-Thomas4run Gatlin kick) Miss-FG Gatlin 33 Miss -McGee 57 passtrom Austin i Gatlin kick) Miss- Humphrey I run (Gatlm kick) LSU 20 51 139 112 24 30 24.0 7 42 3 3 2 9 00 00 Ala 1 33 45 74 15 7 11-0 143 7 4 1 5 DC 00 First downs Rushes yards Pass-ng yards Return yards Passes Punt Fumbles lost Penalties yards Time ot Tul MIU 21 34 37 145 53 331 347 370 0 13 32 51 3 20-0 I 40 7 21 43 4 21 I It 27 21 32 First downs Rushes yards Passing yards Return yards Passes Pun's Fumbles lost Penalties yards Time ot Possession Possession INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS RUSHING LSU, James 1153.
