Suite 25 NOTE: Opportunities for high paying careers ARE available in southland's growing industries -IF you are QUALIFIED Hoffa Figure Says He Lied From Fear CHICAGO (AP)-Vaughan B. Connelly, Miami real estate developer, testified yesterday at James R. Hoffa's mail fraud trial that he gave false testi-4 mony to a Florida grand jury investigating the Teamsters Un-0 ion president because he feared for his life. Connelly is in protective custody of the federal government. Agents guard him around the clock.

The witness, who has said he kicked back nearly $400,000 of a $4.3 million loan from the union pension fund to Hoffa associates, testified he perjured himself before a federal grand jury in Orlando, on April 8, 1959. He said he did so as a result of threats by two defendants in the current trial. Connelly named Benjamin Dranow, 56, former Minneapolis businessman now serving for a mail fraud and tax evasion, and Calvin Kovens, Miami construction firm president, as those who warned him to "be careful" of his testimony before the grand jury. CORE Calls 'Kickoff' Meet SAN FRANCISCO (AP)-The Congress of Racial Equality has called a 1 p.m. news conference today "to discuss our statewide action program" against the Bank of America, world's largest.

"We're kicking off the biggest demonstrations anybody ever saw anywhere," said spokesman Robert Olmstead. He declined to comment on what CORE plans beyond previously announced picketing of the bank's day and night branch at No. 1 Powell St. to begin at 4 p.m. Friday.

CORE dislikes the bank's employment policies and has asked for figures on minority persons employed. Bank officials accused CORE of trying to act as a police agency. The officials said they had agreed to provide employment data 1 to the State Fair Employment Practices Commission. "Regardless of what kind of demonstrations occur, and regardless of how long they persist, this bank will not sign agreements or provide statistical reports for policing purposes to any non-government agency," said the bank in a policy statement. CORE accused the firm's officials of bad faith after the talks were broken off Monday.
