Arnsparger said he will continue coaching the team through the Sugar Bowl. "However, in fairness to the young men being recruited by LSU and to the next coach and his staff, I felt this was the best time to announce my decision, he said, The announcement was made in the LSU locker room after the Tigers closed their regular season by thrashing Tulane, 37-17. "Life away from coaching offers three options for me," he said.

"One, I can start collecting on my NFL pension and enjoy the life of retirement. Two, I can stay at LSU in some capacity. Three, since I'm stepping aside as LSU's coach, I feel I can discuss other non-coaching opportunities which may come up," he said. "At this point, let me emphasize, that I do not wish or intend to pursue any other coaching opportunity. If I wanted to coach, I wouldn't be announcing this decision tonight." "I may just decide to go fishing.

Sugar Bowl President Wicker made the automatic bid to the SEC champion official after the game. "We're going to think about this a few minutes before we accept," Copping said with a dry smile. "We are delighted to accept," he said. These teams were that fast. And in the end, the 31-point production of guard DeJuena Carter was USL's downfall as the Lady Cajuns absorbed a 92-90 overtime defeat to the Houston Lady Cougars in both teams' season openers.

"They got a good shot off when they needed it," USL head coach Ross Cook said of Houston. "But that's because they're experienced. We're young, and I'm very proud of us. They had every oppurtunity to fold, and they didn't." USL broke out to a 14-point lead midway through the first half, but saw the lead dwindle to six at halftime. Houston grabbed a one-point lead 2:39 into the second half and USL would not lead by more than one point for the rest of the game.

Red shirt freshman Kim Perrot scored 20 points for the Cajuns and had 10 assists for the game. One of the Cajuns' problems was free throw shooting, as USL hit only 48.4 percent from the line while Houston hit 58.3 percent and had 21 points worth of charity. USL also had 25 of the game's 46 turnovers. "It's hard to be a good, dis-cliplined team when you run all of the time, especially when you're young," said Cook. "You really can't put the leashes on them." "But Houston's a good team," Cook continued.

"They're going to be right in the thick of the Southwest Conference race, which is the pre-m ier conference in the count ry Carter, who was 13 of 23 from the field but was good on her last seven shots, put Houston ahead on a three point shot with 12 seconds remaining that put the Lady Cougars ahead 84-81. Perrot, however, came right back at the buzzer with a three-point corner shot that bounced high and dropped through. Overtime. normally associated with the fight game, but instead, an athlete that can be admired not only for his ability, but also in the way he handles himself outside the ring. His boxing career, on the contrary, has been anything but simple.

In fact, the Freddie Pendleton story has everyone perplexed. Looking at his 17-14-2 overall record, those who don't follow the boxing circuit wonder how any boxer with that kind of record can be rated in the top three or four by the voting experts. Those who are a part of the circuit look at his record in astonishment, wondering, "How can a boxer with this kind of skill and talent own such a mediocre record?" Even Pendleton's trainer, Larry Kent, has been on both ends of the coin as far as his feelings about the fighter who couldn't find any consistency in the ring, but had a hard time finding an opposing partner. When Kent was offered the services of Pendleton, who at that time owned a 12-12-1 record, he bluntly stated, "1 don't want that bum!" But Pendleton had made a good showing against Medel, who was being trained by Kent at that time, and as Kent mellowed, he decided he'd try the youngster. No stranger to the boxing world, Kent was the first trainer Transfer Missy Davis, who had 17 points for the Lady Cougars, was good on both ends of a one-and-one to open the extra period, then Perrot drove through the lane for a basket for the ninth tie of the game.

Houston then took a four-point lead on layups by Carter and Bridget Chaney (11 points), but USL would again tie the score up on baskets by Donna Conder and true freshman Shaunda Johnson. Forward Teena Cooper then had a six-basket streak snapped and was whistled for her fifth foul of the game, leaving with nine-of-11 shooting for 19 points. Davis was good on both free throws four-of-four in overtime and seven-of-10 for the game for the difference in the contest. "I hope they look at it like I do," said Cook, "and take the good and throw away the bad If they do, it'll be very good for us. Part of maturity is being able to regroup.

USL will take on LSI) in a 7:00 contest at Blackham Coliseum Dee Dee Hawkins shot seven-of-nine off the bench to end 17 points and eight rebounds for the Cajuns in leading a bench effort that drew praise from Cook. native was playing basketball one evening when he was approached to fight Tyronne Trice. Despite having had no formal training during the three previous months, Pendleton took the challange, and to this date, dealt the only blemish in Trice's 24-1 professional record. Then in a non-title fight against Jimmy Paul, Pendleton lost a close decision, but ring magazine had Pendleton the winner 5-4-1. It's been that type of up and down rocky road for Pendleton.

So, what can Pendleton prove by fighting Shelton LeBlanc, who may be just one loss away from retirement? Kent answered that question quickly and decisevly, stating, "We don't want to be idle. Complacency is the number one killer of boxers, and we duck no one." A quiet, confident Pendleton, did not make a prediction. "I've worked hard to get here, and I am expecting a good fight. If I hurt him (LeBlanc) then I may try for the knockout, but our game plan is to go the distance." Pendleton was cut by LeBlanc in April, but that was the result of a head but, and in Las Vegas, it was Pendleton who won a unarm ous decision. Should LeBlanc suffer a loss on Tuesday night, it could be his last hurrah, but Pendleton has as much riding on the fight.

"I feel I will be ready for a title match in about a year and a Pendleton indicated. "A loss to Shelton would be a big setback, and I can't afford that." "All we can ask for is a fair blurted Kent. "When you fight someone in their hometown, the crowd can sometimes influence the judges, and we just want a straight deal." As many experts in the industry will agree, the 17-14-2 record, while unexplainable, is certainly no indication as to this talented fighter's ability. According to Kent his 73 year old trainer.
