Scott) and "Jingle All the Way," all for $14.98 each, as well as "An All Dogs Christmas Carol" and "Prancer" for $14.95 each, and "A Pink Panther Christmas" for $9.94. "A Very Merry Casper Looking for a pricey gift set? Try "The Alfred Hitchcock Centennial Collection." It's got 13 films for $179.98. And the envelope, please: "Topaz," "The Birds," "Family Plot," "Frenzy," "The Man Who Knew Too Much," "Mamie," "Psycho," "Rope," "Saboteur," "Shadow of a Doubt," "Torn Curtain," "The Trouble With Harry" and "Vertigo." History War may be hell, but it rules on video.

The Oscar-winning "Saving Private Ryan" is now offered for sales from DreamWorks, costing $24.99 on tape and $34.99 on DVD. The latter's extras include cast and crew biographies, production notes and two trailers. CBS Video gives another look at World War II in "Air Power," a documentary offered as a four-tape gift set for $49.98. MGM is reissuing many epic historical films for the holidays, including "The Alamo," "A Bridge Too Far," "Exodus," "The Great Escape," "Hawaii" and "Judgment at Nuremberg," each for $24.98. If monsters make your holiday heart glow, Universal is issuing its "Classic Monsters Collection" of "Frankenstein," "The Creature From the Black Lagoon," "The Bride of Frankenstein," "The Invisible Man." "The Phantom of the Opera," "The Wolf Man," "The Mummy" (1932) and "Dracula" (1931).

The eight-tape set is $119.98. Gregory Peck fans can find a small solar system of his star turns in "MacArthur," "World in His Arms" and "Cape Fear" (1962) for $24.98. Universal has a two-tape set of the Marx Brothers' "Animal Crackers" and "Duck Soup" for $19.98. while MGM has a Frank Capra Collection offering "Pocketful of Miracles." "A Hole in the Head" and "Lady for a Day" for $44.92. Mickey isn't the only mouse.

Kids may enjoy a two-tape boxed set of "An American Tail" and "Feivel Goes West" for $19.98. Or for something completely silly, try "Monty Python's Flying Circus," with two boxed sets. Each has three tapes and six episodes and costs $29.95 on tape or $44.95 on DVD. Christmas" features four Casper shorts for $9.98. More holiday films and "Star Trek Generation Widescreen Movie Collection." The Cruise discs are "Days of Thunder," "Top Gun" and "Mission: Impossible." The Ryan titles are "The Hunt for Red October," "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger." The Trek set has "Generations," "First Contact" and "Insurrection." the three most recent movies.

(Each set is around $90.) Arnold Schwarzenegger has a new movie in "End of Days," but his new video collection from Fox offers "The Terminator," "Terminator 2," "Total Recall," "True Lies" and "Predator," all for $64.98 on tape. On DVD you can get "Total Recall." "Predator," "The Running Man" and "Commando" for $94.98. Buy Bonds with the seven-movie James Bond Gift Set. This one covers the four main 007s (Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan) with "Goldfin-ger," "Thunderball." "Live and Let Die," "For Your Eyes Only," "License to Kill," "GoldenEye" and "Tomorrow Never Dies." The set is $91.92 (VHS) and $199.92 (DVD). Each film is available separately.

For more serious TV. try the "Law Order Producer's Collection," a three-tape set with six episodes from the Emmy-winning series DVDs are diving into gift sets with the three-disc "Tom Cruise Action Pack," "Jack Ryan Widescreen Thrillers" Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire star in "Holiday Inn." the 1942 musical featuring the classic song "White Christmas," for $9.98. Naturally, you can't escape perhaps the most popular Christmas picture ever, "It's a Wonderful Life." The heartwarming adventures of Jimmy Stewart's George Bailey are on tape for $19.98 and on DVD for $24.98.

But if you prefer a less reverent spin, try "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" for $14.95. Children Nonholiday Classic cartoons abound from Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird and Foghorn Leghorn in "Looney Tunes: The Collectors Edition." sent from re-tv by calling 1-800-638-2922. An introductory video costs $4.95 plus shipping. It features 15 cartoons, three of which haven't been on video before. Subsequent volumes are $19.95 plus shipping.

Other animated offerings: "The Land Before Time More Sing-Along Songs," costing $12.98. Six previous Land titles with the baby dinosaurs are being re-promoted for $19.98. From Paramount comes "Donkey Kong Country: The Legend of the Crystal Coconut," the first animated film featuring Donkey Kong of video-game fame Gift sets Vintage Yule movies never die. They just get wrapped in new packages. Bing sings and Rosemary makes merry in the "White Christmas Collector's Edition." featuring a widescreen version of the beloved 1954 holiday hit Framed And uhons Open TODAY BR THER'S on the boulevard beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Just so long as that "snow" isn't visual drop outs on a defective VHS tape. That could turn someone's holiday gift into slush. More often, our December tidings come with comfort, joy and boy lots of videos. While rentals drive the couch-pi itato market month in and month out, year's end is the living end for video sales.

That means sleighs full of boxed sets, special editions and Imliday-themed videos are dropping into stores like snowflakes on a reindeer's hide not to mention all those spiffy new DVDs that are taking the United States by storm. So here's an overview and a guide to home entertainment's annual gift-grabber campaign. Hopefully there's something here for everyone just hold the snow, please. (Prices are suggested by the manufacturers. Prices are for VHS tapes only, unless noted.

Some stores and Internet outlets may sell for less.) Children holiday Disney has issued two new animated movies made especially for video, each with gift-giving themes. "Mickey's Once Upon a This entwines three tales featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Goofy and son Max, Donald and nephews Huey; Duey and Louie and even pets Pluto and Figaro. Their stories offer music, humor, fun and feeling, as the nephews experience a spin on "Groundhog Day" (it's Christmas every day) and Mickey and Minnie update 0. Henry's classic 1906 short story, "Gift of the Magi." Kelsey Grammer narrates.

(VHS $22.99, DVD $39.99) "Winnie the Pooh: Seasons of Pooh Bear adds his honey flavor with five new songs. This film, too, stitches together three tales. Featured in each are the fun-loving critter pals of Hundred Acre Wood, from Pooh and Rabbit to Tigger and Piglet. ($22.99) "I'll Be Home for Disney also has issued the video premiere of last year's live-action comedy-adventure starring Jonathan Taylor Thomas. He plays a college student who must cross America to get home by Christmas Eve.

(VHS $22.99, DVD "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Golden Books is marking the 35th anniversary of the stop-motion animated title, featuring music by Burl Ives. The disc includes an interactive trivia game and video clips of other holiday classics. (DVD debut. $19.98: tape reissue. $9.98.) From Nickelodeon come "Doug: Christmas Story." Rocko's Modern Christmas" and "Ren Stimpy: Have Yourself a Stinky Little Christmas" (all $9.95) as well as "Hey Arnold's Christmas" Seasonal Peanuts videos include the classic "A Charlie Brown "Happy New Year, Charlie Brown" (both $12.95) and "It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown" Teletubbies get into the spirit with "Merry Christmas.

Teletubbies!" a two-tape set with more than 90 minutes of Teletubbies holiday festivities. For a video first. Columbia says its "The Nuttiest Nutcracker" is the first computer-animated movie for direct-to-video release. Featuring the voices of Jim Belushi, Cheech Marin and Phyllis Diller. on tape it's and on disc $19.95.

Barney is back, too. Having sold almost 5 million copies of "Barney Waiting for Santa" since its release nine years ago. the purple dinosaur returns with the new "Barney's Night Before Christmas." Never shown on TV. it's offered as an ambitious DD title, with DVD-ROM extras, costing $24.99, or on tape for $14.95. Still more holiday kidvid titles include Warner's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." "A Christmas Story" and the "clay-mation" chestnut "The Year Without a Santa Claus." each $14.95.

The first two are on DVD for $19.98 each.
