The extortioner stayed in contact with the Deans for a month through letters and phone calls. Twice, he lured the Deans, police ter, Tammy, began receiving extortion letters in July 1990, investigators reopened the case. The first of three extortion letters arrived on July 21, 1990. Investigators say they are almost certain the letters came from Roger Deans killer.

The first letter laced with vulgarities demanded $150,000. If D.J. Dean didnt pay, 29-year-old Tammy would be killed, it said. Do not risk your daughter. Shes the last one left, the letter said.

If you go to the police, Ill wait un-il they can no longer protect her and kill her. Police Say the extortionist knows details of Tammys life from before Deans murder and, based on information in his extortion letter, She said she heard scuffling downstairs, followed by shots. Then her husband shouted, OK, you Ill give you the $30,000. Deans body later was found at the foot of their snow-covered driveway. He had been shot six times.

Investigators say the case wasnt a random robbery, Douglas County Sheriff's Capt. Bill Walker says Dean may have been the victim of an extortionist and possibly knew the man was coming. Investigators think the intruder may not have intended to kill Dean, Walker said. But the investigation came up empty and was put on inactive status in the summer of 1986. When D.J.

Roger Dean, the owner of Sinsel-Dean Brokerage Co. was shot to death outside his home in Douglas Countys upscale Lone Tree subdivision Nov 21, 1985. His wife, D.J., said she was taking a bath when her husband of 26 years called her into the bedroom. She said a masked man was holding a gun to her husband and ordered Dean to tie up his wife and cover her eyes with tape.

Then the two men apparently left the room The intruder soon returned and demanded information from D.J. about the couple savings account. She gave him a few details before he lost all control" and became very agitated L-P. "I think it irresponsible for the health department to allow an increase of emissions at this plant without knowing what the health effects are," Shephard said.

Im disappointed, said Ballan-tyne I thought the department of health was in the business of protecting the publics health. But I guess they just serve industry. Louisiana-Pacific lawyer Andy Loewi said that if commissioners allow the topic to be discussed, experts will testify that toxic emissions at the Olathe plant are so low as to be absolutely safe." From A to Classified Ads Everyday! were observed spray painting on the wall that all people in the apartment were going to burn tonight, arson investigator Andy Archuleta in his report on the fire. The fire caused an estimated $20,000 in damage and forced tenants to temporarily flee their apartments near downtown Denver into the frosty night. Two were treated for smoke inhalation.

Pauline Dyer, who bought the turn-of-the century gray brick building in 1973, said Sunday all but two of the tenants have been able to return. Dyer said she told her building manager to start eviction proceedings against the people in the gutted apartment after a loud party last week. She said the people at the party kicked in two doors and knocked over a guardrail. The tenants agreed to leave by 5 p.m. Friday, but then asked for extra time so someone could pick up his belongings.

They left shortly after 8 p.m., she said. As a result, police arrested Jose Jimenez-Martinez, 24; Juanita Ann Zarzoza, 28; Juan Vi-dal-Ramirez, 28; Antonio Tel-lez-Garcia, 27, and Daniel Vi-dal-Ramirez, 28. All were in Denver City Jail Sunday night for investigation of first-degree arson, each on a $25,000 bond. Berthoud man dies in head-on GREELEY A 21-year-old Berthoud man died early Sunday after a head-on collision on the U.S. 34 bypass six miles west of Greeley, investigators said.

Donald Lee Schachterle died of internal injuries at the Northern Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Schachterle was heading east on the highway in his pickup when he drifted into the westbound lane, hitting a car driven by Judith Kessler, 46, of Fort Collins. The accident was reported at midnight; Schachterle was pronounced dead at 1 a m. We have two serious crimes, said Robert Pence, who heads the Denver FBI office.

We feel the key to one very well could lie with the answer to the other. Whats most unusual is (we have) an individual involved in the most serious crime, a homicide, who would then five years later admit it, and then turn around and try to extort the victims family. Thats unprecedented. The case also will be featured on NBCs Unsolved Mysteries at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
