Clippers 115 Late Games Not Included Tuesday's Top 20 Fared By Murray Olderman NEW ORLEANS (NEA) In the northern reaches of Saskatchewan, which breed hockey players in the winter, mosquitoes in the summer and not much else in between, a little boy dreamed his own unlikely dream. He dreamed that, emerging from North Battleford on the isolated plains of central Canada, he would play in the far-off National Football League south of the border. And Rueben Mayes did. Having completed his first season as a pro with the New Orleans Saints, Mayes has been named winner of the NEA World Almanac Bert Bell Trophy as the outstanding rookie in the NFL. The Bell award, which reflects the views of pro football coaches, scouts and journalists, was made by experts representing the World Almanac and its 140 co-sponsoring newspapers; and its publisher.

NEA. The results were distributed by NEA to more than 600 daily newspapers. Any day now, Mayes will get his green card as an alien making his living in the United States. Mayes bucked the odds all the way He went to Washington State, which is on the edge of the boonies in Division I college football; it was the only school that offered him a scholarship. In his junior year, he burst forth as an All-American, with such performances as 357 yards gained rushing in one game (an NCAA record) against Oregon.

Still, the pros had him tabbed as just a straight-ahead runner out of the veer formation. The Saints drafted him in the third round, behind touted local product Dalton Hilliard of LSU. Hilliard started the first four games of the season Mayes didn even touch the ball in the opener. But against the 49ers in the third game, he flashed his ability with 64 yards on seven carries. In his first NFL start, against the tough Washington Redskins, Mayes picked up 80 yards in 13 carries.

He was off and running. Despite the late start, he broke the challenging 1.000-yard barrier. He finished third in the NFC (behind Eric Dickerson and Joe Morris) with 1 ,353 yards rush- The present has turned out quite well. too. for a 23-year old rookie.

In the Voting for the Bell award, named for the past president of the NFL, Mayes was a clear choice over such other rookies as quarterback Jim Everett of the Los Angeles Rams i an even later starter); wide receiver Bill Brooks of Indianapolis; and linebacker John Offerdahl of Miami. USFL products such as Herschel Walker, though nominally first-year men in the NFL. were exempted from the voting. Which left Mayes to rise to the top. ing ahd a 4.7-yard average every time he was handed the ball.

He also scored eight touchdowns on the ground. Against Tampa Bay in mid-October. Mayes sprained an ankle and still picked up 172 yards in 24 carries He peaked with a 203-yard performance against Miami. And he did this hampered all fall by a partially torn Achilles tendon which required postseason surgerv. Maves is built chunkilv at 5-foot 1 1 and 201 pounds.

The Saints' media guide billed him as "a straight-ahead runner with gcod blocking But he showed an excellent burst of speed and the talent to cut against the grain when he reached daylight In team tests, he was also the strongest plaver on the Saints, pound for pound. Coach Jim Mora of New Orleans feels that the lack of high-school football experience delayed his development, and that the best is still to come.
