SANDY SOIL IS BLAMED FOR DEATHS ON HOT DAYS High Mortality Rate in Brooklyn Due to Loose Condition of Ground. IMPREGNATED BY MOISTURE. Humidity Hangs Heavy Over This Borough, While Manhattan, Built on Rocks, Suffers Little. During the recent hot spell- or rather series of hot spells, beginning in June and lasting to the present date--it was a remarkable fact that the largest number of heat prostrations and deaths from such prostrations occurred in Brooklyn, that 'is compared with the other boroughs of the greater city. well This as has this been year.

so On in some previous of the years hot- as est days the proportion of prostrations and deaths in Brooklyn, as compared with the other boroughs combined, was as great as three to one. On other days the proportion was two to one. But on no single day did the lists reported in the papers show a less number of deaths and prostrations for Brooklyn than for the other boroughs. The reason for this condition of affairs is, at first sight, not easy to perceive. For certainly Brooklyn cannot be compared with Manhattan in the matter of congestion.

As in other large towns, there are, of course, large tracts where the population is very much crowded. But there is nothing that can compare with the huddled tenement conditions on the East Side of Manhattan, where whole families exist in a single room, and where the narrow streets themselves are SO crowded as almost to resemble aisles in some he vast building, and where there is scarcely a breath of air to be obtained on a hot day. What then, is the reason? It is not true that the heat is any greater in Brooklyn than Manhattan. The official thermometer ole the weather bureau stations do not show any appreciable difference as regards temperature. But it is not always high temperature which produces heat prostratione and deaths from heat prostration.

It is high temperature in combination with one other element--the element of humidity. A temperature of 98, with a slight degree of humidity, is less oppressive and comfortable and less dangerous to humanity than a temperature of 90, accompanied by great humidity. In some of the plateaus of the Southern States, for instance, the thermometer will frequently register from 95 to 100, or even in excess of 100, and men will go about their work in no prohibitive degree of discomfort, and with little danger from sunstroke. The explanation lies in the fact that the air is dry. People who perspire dry, out quickly in those altitudes, as the athletic trainers phrase it, and a heat of 95 degrees there is less oppressire than heat of 85 degrees at the level, where the air is humid.

the explanation for the greater number of prostrations in Brooklyn, therefore, lies in the humidity. It is not to be denied that this borough is more humid than Manhattan. Various explanations this have been offered. One of these of, to the effect that Brooklyn is nearer sea-is more directly in contact with the bay---than Manhattan, which is surrounded by its rivers. But that only half an explanaand yards is not great enough to account tion, since the lie difference of a few thousfor all the in humidity.

The true explanation, scientific observers are beginning to believe, lies in the difference in the character of the soil. pa Manhattan is almost one solid rock. Long Island, on the other hand, has a loose and sandy soil. The mysteries of meteorology are many, especially to the mind of the layman. But it is a scientific fact that the looser and sandier the soil, the impregnated with water does the atmosphere above it become.
