8B The Daily Sentinel Wednesday, February 21, 2001 mmm Company defends new CU software By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BOULDER The University of Colorado is still struggling to issue employees proper paychecks and benefits, months after installing a new $33 million, four-campus software system. Its tremendous stress, a tremendous amount of work, said Lynn Walloch, who helps administer the payroll for 525 employees of CUs Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences. Every month, I wonder about whos not going to get paid, and probably every month we have a problem with somebodys paycheck. Installation of the PeopleSoft Inc. accounting and payroll system began in 1999 and was completed in July.

Kevin Horigan, general manager of the education and government divisions at PeopleSoft, said problems during CUs transition had nothing to do with the software. A PeopleSoft manual says it could take months or years to install or test new programs. Thousands of satisfied customers around the world use our soft ware successfully every day, he said. Horigan said part of the problem may be that CU initially chose an outside consultant over PeopleSoft, based in Pleasanton, to help implement the system. Other schools also have had problems with Peoplesoft.

Glitches in software used by Cleveland State University have delayed financial aid for thousands of students. The University of Minnesota in 1999 had a monthlong delay in financial aid payments and registration flaws last year. CU does not use the programs for student services. John Bliss, CU's vice president for budget and finance, said the system will nevertheless be better than the 20-year-old system it replaced. This has been a major, major implementation for the university, and I think, clearly, when you change as many systems as we did, theres a huge challenge, Bliss said.

CU recently applied to be a reference for Peoplesoft when other customers ask about their products, Horigan said The Aces BOBEKWOUF Jane P. Grand Junction 81501 I wish to say what I think and feel today, with the proviso that tomorrow perhaps I shall contradict it all. Emerson We needed a club lead to beat him, offered East. However, partner, I cannot fault you for leading my suit. After the deal was over, East had good reason to retract his analysis. What did he see later that he missed during play? East took Wests spade queen and returned a spade to Souths king.

A trump finesse lost to Easts king, and East searched for a way to partners hand for a club shift. There was no way. The best East could do now was to cash his club ace to save an insignificant overtrick. If he led anything else, South would draw trumps and discard his club losers on dummys diamonds. Where was the hidden entry to Wests hand? Wests opening lead should have given East the clue.

Since West had never bid, it was futile for East to hope West could Avin a trick for a club shift. And if West couldnt lead one, why should South? Therefore, Easts best chance to get West on lead was in the spade suit. And he had to act early. Instead of overtaking Wests spade queen at trick one, he should have ducked, allowing South to win. Later, when East Avins his trump king, he leads his lowest spade (suit preference) to Wests nine.

West can then make the killing club shift, and instead of winning 10 tricks, South gets only nine. Death a Tristan T. Bakken, 43, Grand Junction, died Feb. 17, 2001. No services are planned.
