October 5.1977 Paddtewheels Proposed To Move Huge Icebergs AMES. Iowa (UPD - Saudi Arabia's Prince Mohamcd Al Faisal proposed Tuesday equipping huge Antarctic icebergs with sophisticated versions of isth-cenlury Mississippi River boat pad- dlew heels lo bring water In his parched homeland. In a paper presented to the N First International Conference on Iceberg Utilization, Faisal and Dr.- Shawkat Ismail, technical adviser to the prince's Iceberg Transport International; Ltd., expressed concern that the Icebergs could prove loo unwieldy for tugboats. . " Instead, they proposed in- staUing paddlewhecls with huge arms thai would propel lOOmillion-ton icebergs from the Antarctic to the Arabian peninsula or any arid nation. Faisal's" proposal contrasts with more traditional plans for large-scale 'iceberg transport and use, most of .which have involved conventional sea-going tugboats or even nuclear- powered "supertuKs''*) tow the bergs across thousands of m'iles ofocean. "The towing speed 'recommended for the transportation of icebergs is considered very low for the existing tugs to run with reasonable efficiency.' Faisal said. "It is suggested the icebergs be equipped with their own propulsion in the form of paddlewheels." His plan called for paddle "arms" to be allat-hed to both sides of an iceberg, wiih powerplants situated on its lop Faisal said that by equipping both sides with paddlewheels rather than 'placing the propulsion system at the roar of the iceberg, the ice mass could be navigated with ease. Kcynoting the conference banquet Tuesday night, Faisal said finding a solution to the world's need for Iresli waler could provide the answer to a range of global problems He said the'exploitation of icebergs as a fresh water source could provide solutions .-. lo many of the problems lacing the world's underdeveloped and industrial nations.
