I LHJUVLrLf ll'll'l MOVING AltOlMD UBy RALPH TROS. The Metropolitan Golf Writers Association, with a little outside help, tosses a welcome home luncheon for golfer Ben Hogan tomorrow. Thursday night at the Park Lane, the United States Golf Association tenders a dinner. Ben is going to be well fed. Just what Mayor Impellit-teri has prepared in the way of a welcome to the holder of the British and U.

S. Open championships, the first all-conquering golfer since Gene Sarazen's triumph in 1932, is something else. The point is that what "Ike" started early this season in putting golf back on Page 1, Hogan is doing even a little better. It's almost six years since that night in Toledo when Hogan told me that bit that hit the headlines hard, "I've found the secret of the game and I won't even tell Valerie." Valerie is his wife. George Mikan, the basketball player; Joe DiMaggio, the ball player (and not golf devotee, by the way), and I tried to get at that secret.

Not that I believed there really was one, after 400 years and probably 40,000,000 people looking for it. But what with the way Hogan has operated since his big comeback in 1950 (after the accident), winning champion, ships by four, five and six strokes, and with great scores, I'm getting like that old Fresh Meadow member, who always made up to the young assistants to Sarazen and then Ci-uci fully believing that there was a secret, an inner secret the pros (tad but would never give to amateurs. Hogan's scoring has almost made this reporter a convert. Eddie Arcaro, if you are not up on your foreign (Chicago) news, is still doing mighty well. John Partridge, the septuagenarian trainer of Jamie Arcaro's special mount these days, says Eddie is riding better than ever in his life.

That's mighty big praise for a man already thought pretty well 'of. There's a rumor around that the one place in this country that never should even admit there's such a thing as gambling is the one place these days where one can lay a real good off the track bet. It's hard believing people could be that dumb even 25 years later. May-field Overshadows Field in St. Paul Open St.

Paul, July 20 (U.R) Shelley Mayfield, a newcomer to the top ranks of golf, overshadowed a lot of big names today with his St. Paul Open victory. He is a transplanted Texan from Cedarhurst, L. I. Mayfield didn't get a bogey in his last three rounds yesterday as he wound up with a 19 -under-par 269 total.

His closing round was a seven -under -par 65 while his earlier rounds were 69, 67 and 68. Veteran Dutch Harrison, Ard-more, was second with 271, and pre -tournament favorite Sam Snead, White Sulphur Springs, W. was third at par 272. Davis Starts Comeback Today With Rams Redlands, July 20 (U.R) Glenn Davis, former Army All-America halfback, begins his comeback try in professional football today when he reports for pre -season training to the Los Angeles Rams. Auto Wars Pending the announcement of the latest point-score standings in the All-State Racing circuit, to be made tomorrow by Director Gus Hager, it is apparent that a shakeup lg due the leaders in the Dexter ParK division.

That shakeup will undoubt edly be soon if the trend of recent weeks continues at tonight's nig Masonic charity show in Woodhaven. This is the second such show run by the Masons lor hospital equip ment and a third is slated next Monday night, again at Dexter. Ever since the standings were first compiled back in late May one man has dominated them Johnny Rocco. At times Axel Anderson and George Cousin moved in to pose threats. But Andy has not been the same since his crack- up a month ago and Cousin was an overnight meteor.

He flashed brilliantly, but briefly. Uf course, the new whiz Is Al DeAngelo, the Queens Village speedster who has completely dwarfed the field In the last two weeks. But those who know the sport are also saying that the Lacy brothers Jim and Joe will have to be watched. Jim scored twice (once in dead heat with DeAngelo) in the past month, better than he's done in the past three or four seasons Hes definitely a comer and brother Joe is not far behind. Another whirlwind to watch Eddie Brunnhoelzl, who has been consistently in the winner's circle that is, within the first six to finish in the 25-lap final.

Great things are also expected of him. McKinney Considers Return to Baseball Indianapolis, July 20 (U.R) Frank E. McKinney, former National Chairman of the Dem ocratic party, said today he is thinking of buying back into major league baseball. McKinney, one-time part own of the Pittsburgh Pirates, was reportedly first in line if the Chicago Cubs' franchise is ever put up for sale. "I'm definitely interested In returning to major league base- Dan," McKinney said "I'm not interested in a two town league except.

There is no tenseness in the body, arms or hands. Tenseness spoils accuracy. The hands are close in to the body and, if you're bending over properly the left fore-arm rests easily, lightly on the left leg.

How far you take the club back depends upon how far you want the ball to roll forward. And you should shoot for a spot a foot or so beyond the cup. This Is to make sure that you give the ball a chance to drop. Notice that the blade of the club, at the extreme of the back-swing, has opened slightly. On wet greens allow for the: retarding effect of the moisture on the roll of the ball.
