M. Breaiclns Into Store and an At tempted Bobbery The Thief Frightened Off. On Tuesday morning, about 2 o'clock, the grocery store of Wm. B. Hall, corner of Anu and Seventh streets, was broken open while the proprietor was absent.

A friend of the occupant of the store, returning from a meeting held at Duncan Holmes', and who was passing in the vicinity of the es tablishment, heard a noise and called out for Hall, whom he supposed was -up. At this juncture the scoundrel ran and leaped over the rear fence. The alarm was then given and on search being made it was as ccrtained that the back door of the store had been forced with a crowbar, the fasten ing taken away and the door thrown back on its hinges. A further investigation in the rear of the premises, at the point where the would-be thief made his hurried exit, brought to view a bag containing a quanti ty of cHicken feathers, leading to the im- berence that the rascal bad either fared or made preparations to fare sumptuously on the food from which the feathery shapes had been extracted. Nothing was obtained from the store.

A Fine old French Gentleman, One of the Olden Time. We had a visit yesterday from Dr. F. J. Kron, who resides in Stanley county, in this State.

In 1823, or just-51 years ago, be first landed in Wilmington, and his remarks in reference to the many and great improve ments which have been made in the city since that time were peculiarly interest ing. Though he has for a long time past been enjoying the privacy of a rural retreat, witk the pursuits incident thereto, he still subscribes for and reads with avidity a number of the leading foreign journals, and has now added the Stab to his budget of news, political and miscellaneous journals with which to solace his declining years.

A murderous affray occurred on board the schooner Annie B. of St. John, N. off Monhegan, last night. The Annie B.

was bound for Portland from St. John with old railroad iron, and before she sailed a man came on board and wanted to work his passage, which was permitted. At 12 last night, when the mate's watch was called, the passenger, who was in the caDtain's watch, came aft and suddenly discharged a revolver at the captain, the ball grazing his head. The captain ran into the cabin and got his. revolver.

He called to the mate, and, on coming on deck, met the man coming aft again and discharged several shots at him, but without apparent effect and was knocked down. The mate, Solomon Camp, 'coming out the.cabin way, was struck a terrible blow on the hack, of the head with an iron bar, which fractured his skull. The villain then fired a pistol shot into head. The only other man of the crt-W was shot at without injury and lied up the rigging, where he remained during the affray. The captain, er-hausting his revolver, was pursued to the cabin by the assailant, where a struggle took place between them, which was renewed on deck, the captain being re-enforced by the cook, a ov.

Failins in their efforts to gel the niHii overboard, they' retreated to the cabiu. The assailant then cut the halyards and nheel, letting the sails down, and gelling into the boat, cut it loose and left the vessel. At daylight signals of distress were aet, and a New York vessel put a man on the disabled she was brought into this port this afternoon. The mate will in all probability die. The captain is hot seriously injured.

It is thought the assult was made with the intention of robbing the captain of freight money, which the passenger knew he bad on board before sailing. Uen. D. Btjrch, Secretary. Sanitary matters. City Marshal Price informs us that commencing with this morning he designs putting the entire street force of the city at the work of cleaning up and placing Wilmington in a good sanitary condition. This is a very necessary step oh the part of the authorities, as the city is far from being in a clean and healthy condition.

Let the good work go on and in" this connection we would state that trash and garbage should in no case be allowed to accumulate on the streets. As fast as it is removed form the lots it should be taken away by tbe city carts. This plan may have been adhered to as a general thing, heretofore, but we hear of casea-where trash, has been placed on the street and remained there for many months. We hope the Marshal will see that no such neglect is allowed to occur it is au-imponam xmv, mo suctu and alleys of the city, as well as the private lots, eellars, should be keptclean. The Marshal will' furnish disinfectants to all who desire them.
