The maximum temperature as observed by the Government Weather and Crop bureau yesterday, was 79.0 degrees. The steamer Neuse in its cargo, took last night a quantity of fresh green peas, grown by local truckers.

These peas go to Northern markets. There were sales of 40 bales of cotton in the local market, yesterday at prices ranging between 4 7-8 to 5. 3-16 cents. The schooner Carrie, from Baird's creek, with cotton, and the sloop L. White, from Bay river, with a eral cargo, are in port.

The trading schooners, Theresa, Sarah Midyette and Fleetwood, with cotton, have arrived from Hyde county and are unloading at the Cotton Gin. We have just secured the agency for Huyler's most exquisite Chocolates and Bon Bans and will send off our order Wednesday. Any one desiring 8 special package must order at the store today. N. Cards are out announcing the marriage of Mr. James Long Street of Newport News, (better known in this oity as to Miss Jessie Pendleton Parker of Smithtield, at noon November 17th, 1897. Merman Hines Is Dead, Herman Hines, died on last Sun day, November 7th, at his home in Selma, N. at the age of 15 years. Herman was the only son of Mr.

and Mrs. James M. Hines, formerly of this city, and their friends here will learn of their bereavement with with sincere sorrow. The funeral took place at Lenoir Institute, where the remains were bariod. Fire Last Night.

Shortly after 10 o'clock last night, there was a cry of "fire" on Pollock street, and a rush was made for Federal alley, where a frame building, owned by Ike Eabanks and occupied by some colored women, W88 st en to be on fire. The Fire Department responded promptly and the fire was quickly put out. The building was partly consumed. No cause of fire was discovered, the occupants asleep at the time. "New Coon in Town." Just about dark, several days ago, a possum was discovered ou Pollock street, below Craven, and there soon ensued a wild chase after the animal by a crowd of colored persons, who were filled with visions of baked possum.

The possum took to a tree, but was driven from this into another, from which he was shaken, and quickly became the victim of erous doge which had joyfully joined in the chase. County Scrimmage. Word is brought here of a lively time which took place a few ago in Pamlico county. The trouble began on a Sunday at Concord church, and the offenders were brought to Trent for trial before magistrate. When the crowd, offenders and witnesses appeared before the magis-! trate.

there arose such a discussion and dispute, that all respect for the majesty of the law was forgotten, and a general fight took place, all hands joining. The case may be heard in court before it is settled. Death of Dr. Geo. I K.

Bagby. The news of the death of Dr.y Geo. K. Bagby, which occurred yesterday at 1 p. in Beaufort, was received here last night, and was quite a shock to the Doctor's many friends and acquaintances in city, where Dr.

Bagby had lived and practiced his profession for many years. Dr. G. Bagby was born in Lenoir county about 62 years ago, and after spending some years at Kineton, came to this city, where he has resided most of the time, living at Kinston and Morehead at times, and finally last summer moying to Beaufort, where he died. lle leaves a wife, four children and two brothers, the brothers living in Australia and Ft.

Wayne, Ind. lIe was a Mason, and Prosident of the Lodge of Knights of lIarmony, recently organized at Beaufort. The funeral takes place today, at Beaufort, where the remains will be buried. PERSONAL. Mr.

Guy Cox returned from Kington last night. Mr. HI. W. Steinhelper of fort, was here yesterday.

Mrs. S. L. Dill and son, Marqus, went to Beaufort last night. Dr.

John S. Long went to Havelock last nigbt on business. Mrs. S. J.

Porter has returned from Ivanhoe, Sampson county. 'Japt. Chas. B. Keeler, keeper of North West Point Lighthouse, is in the city.

Mr. Chas, R. Thomas left yesterday morning for Danville, on business. Mr. W.

H. Pierce returned home last night from an extonded pleasure trip. Messrs. Dennis Rawls, Merritt, and W. R.

Reel, Arapahoe, are in the city. Mr. Warren Cochran, representing the American Type Founders Co. of Baltimore, is in the city. Mr.

Eugene Arthur, proprietor of the New Berne House. Moreaead City, was in the city yesterday. Mr. Z. V.

Barrington went to Jacksonville yesterday in the interest of the JOURNAL. Rev. G. L. Leyburn, returned last night from Salisbury, where he has been attending the meeting of the Synod.

Mra. Jar. W. Waters and daughter returned last night from bury where they have been spending a few months. Messrs.

The Cora Van Tassel Co. will play in the Theatre on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights of this week, in an entire lot of new plays, which will be announced. For The City Band. L. Wetherington, of Vance. boro, in crossing the A. N. U.

railroad bridge last evening ou his way to James City, fell through the bridge and came near being seriously injured. Mr, Wetherington was going over on some business connected with logs at the time he met with his mishap. A Rare Treat. Mr. D.

A. Consadine is in the city stopping ac the Chattawka, as advance agent for the wonderful Veriscope, producing the CorbettFitzsimmons fight as it came off at Carson City. It will appear at the New Berne 'Theatre on Monday night, Nov. 15th. The Trent River Bridge.

The pile driver which is to be employed in the construction of the new bridge over the Trent river, has come, and was being placed in Monday. Contractor Neal is here, and says he expects to begin the construction of the county bridge across the Trent river, this week. Shipping Notes. Arrived, the schooner Chief, Capt. Mrs. T. A. Green, sent to Mr. W.

H. Oliver, last night, a huge box of Chrysanthemums, of several varieties, which will be sent today to the Chrysanthemum show in Wil. mington. These Chrysanthemums were grown in Mrs. Green's garden on Pollock street and will be entered in the list of open air plants at the Wilmington show.

N. and Mrs. James Ironmonger of near Norfolk, are visiting relatives and friends at Belliair. We were pleased to have them present at our Sunday school last Sunday. It took some of us back to the days of "long ago," as we remembered that both these ladies had been honored teachers in the Beech Grove Sunday school.

It has been nearly 30 years since Mrs. Myers was a teacher in our Sunday school. Less than half a dozen of those who were members of the school then were present last Sunday. One by one we. move out, till soon the Guard" will join the great school above.
