rntna relected nianuscrtiit. A COMPETITIVE AGE. This an age in which competition in all kinds of business ia so keen, that the ordinary merchant can not keep in the tush, us be 010 he fully comprehends the situation he ia left far in the rear of the commercial army of progress. Just now this competition was never so 8barti. No town ia too small or too far rum thu linca of railroad or steamboat travel.

They are all visited by the hustling, push-iug drummer who has goods to sell at prices which are usually below those offered at nearby cities. The South is again being invaded, and by an arm; of drummers that must bring a shudder to many Merchants in the South who have hitherto been content and salisped with their trade, as it has flowed regularly into their stores and their profits havo been pretty sure, although perhaps a line of credit tins been extended. Today no merchaut can remain a passive factor, relying upon business to come to him without an active solicitation upon his part. Tho retail merchant must spend thought and money in attracting 'trade to liis store. He must advertise actively and keep himself before his community, lie must buy cheap and satisfied with a moderate profit.

It in addition to his retail trade the merchant do 33 a jobbing biui ness, he must reach out for trade. Every new mile of rail or boat com-mnnication opened up should (ind him represented along ila line, seeking business and acquaintance, and thus by his personality securing trade. The Northern merchant is doing this, and why should not the Xeu Rerue merchant do it. Why should not our merchants invadu every foot of territory in Eastern Xt tb Carolina, and beyond They can do it, and should do it, and not lot others come in and take away the business which can be mado and kept theirs by well directed ellorLs. It does no good to complain about this trade competition, the way for any merchant to do is ti get in the commercial push himself and by his brain and energy success fully hold his own.

There is 110 time to lose in this, for the tide is run ning swiftly and to hesitate wait for a cessution in this wild whirl of competition means 1 ms Henceforth there is to be no sitting down and waiting for business to come to a merchant. UiHiticas to day has to be sought, and sought with skill and discretion. New Heme merchants must out for business, they must com live factors on every line of rail id or every point that 11 b.tat and by their personal endeavors secure and bring with them In: this cilv. This Ciiti be done, and ii not be neglected. Trade perhaps small in volume and eir; bat it will grow, therefore t.
