BOULDER Testing of DNA evidence in the lOOday-old JonBenet Ramsey murder investigation began this week at a Maryland lab. But authorities cautioned again Thursday that results may not pinpoint the childs killer. An arrest is not imminent, and could be months away, city spokeswoman Leslie Aa-holm said Thursday. Police intend to take the time they need to present a meticulously complete case to the district attorneys office, she said.

Tests are being made on DNA samples taken from the home of John and Patsy Ramsey after JonBenets body was found Dec. 26 in a room in the familys basement. Cellmark Diagnostics of Germantown, on March 4 received the samples, which apparently included blood. But the start of testing was delayed until this week after lawyers for the Ramseys declined an offer from the Boulder District Attorneys Office to send a representative to observe testing. Results of the testing could take up to six weeks, said Mark Stolorow, director of operations for Cellmark.

Stolorow said that while DNA results are important in narrowing a suspect pool by identifying a genetic profile, DNA is "just a piece of the puzzle. Police said that they wanted to see an unedited copy of the Ramseys Jan. 1 interview with CNN because they have been unable to interview the couple about the specific details of how the body was discovered and the events preceding the discovery of the victims body. Thats the fastest track our code allows us to go, he said.

Plans to expedite the process were stymied because city officials failed to publish a notice of a public hearing that was to have been Thursday evening. As a result the hearing on zoning changes will be April 17. Hearings on the jail itself will be in June. Jail architect Bob Johnson of Den- ver showed front and side views of the proposed structure, which is to be built on the present jail site, just north of the courthouse. During the 18 months of construction, the jail and sheriff's department will be located in temporary buildings on county-owned property west of the courthouse.

The new jail will be built of precast concrete forms covered on the outside with the same type of tan brick used fra- the courthouse. The top floor will be a light-colored stucco, and the first floor will be trimmed with reddish brick or sandstone. The jails walls will be stepped forward and back along each side. There will be no barbed-wire fences, and exercise areas will be screened from view. County commissioners say the jail is expected to cost about $10 million, a higher price than the $7 million they were planning to spend on a 192-bed, one-story jail on the UPL property.

Much of the cost increase is due to the larger jail size. Changing sites adds just 3 percent to the overall costs, the commissioners said. They said it will be more cost-effective to build a larger jail now instead of an addition later. The new jail will also house a detox unit, juvenile detention, and mental health holding cells.
