The players (officially the International Brotherhood of Student-Athletes) are demanding larger monthly stipends, shorter classroom hours and the right to free agency (that is, agents who will work for them for no charge). College presidents, in turn, vowed that they would play out the season, if necessary, using previous flunk-outs, junior college imports and red-shirts willing to cross picket lines.

The strike threat nearly overshadowed No. 2 Pitts Comedown of the Week award for succumbing to a 20-point underdog, Temple. DENVER Except for a couple of minor egg-throwing incidents, all was quiet at Denver Broncos headquarters on Thursday as about 50 alternate players held their first practice behind closed doors Only a handful of regular players picketed outside headquarters during the third day of the NFL player strike. Broncos management averted a confrontation Thursday morning as the substitute players, who assembled at a nearby hotel on Wednesday, arrived for meetings and practice at a rear entrance while a decoy bus occupied the strikers attention out front.

About a half dozen Bronco regulars were on the picket line when the buses arrived at 8:30 a.m. Most expressed disappointment at the tactic employed. wanted to see them, said wide receiver Vance Johnson. I wanted to see the look on their faces, and I wanted them to see me. Im trying to figure out where the back gate is.

Ive never used it before. They must have made one yesterday. Tight end Clarence Kay said he expected them to show their faces. Asked if he had anticipated any violence, Kay said, I didnt anticipate anything except walking the line today. Offensive tackle Jim Juriga, who is on injured reserve, said the end-around worked perfectly.

They had everybody fooled out here, he said. I'm kind of disappointed. I have some things Id like to say to them (the substitutes), but nothing for publication. There were no picketers in evidence at 7 p.m. when the alternate players left the facility by bus, bound for the team hotel.

The NFL cancelled all games for this weekend, and with no end in sight to the strike, the Bronco coaches began preparing the alternate players for a game at home against Houston on Oct. 4. Coach Dan Reeves called the workout very good for the first day. I didnt expect tremendous execution. The conditioning level is not what you would-want, so we took it kind of slow.

Asked what quality of play he expected on Oct. 4, Reeves said, All I can say is were going to work as hard as we can to get ready to play. Will this be the normal Denver Broncos? No. But I think it will be entertaining. We have some guys with talent who came close to making various teams.

Arkansas State THE PROS The New Jersey Giants and the Los Angeles Rams, obviously trying to get a head start on their counterparts, unveiled their own strike team Sunday, composed of previously cut players, peanut vendors and the like. The Giants, not to be confused with last years Super Bowl winners, fell to Dallas 14-16. The Rams, not to be confused with the team considered a Super Bowl contender this year, were beaten by Minnesota 16-21.

Surely, no real Rams team would have lost, in the final moments, as Los Angeles did on a touchdown pass that Viking QB Wade Wilson admitted later I was trying to throw away. Meanwhile, Oiler fans were suggesting a strike of general managers after Houstons Ladd Herzeg was arrested in Buffalo for allegedly mooning a wedding reception twice and punching out the brides brother (the enraged Bills subsequently defended the brides honor, 34-30). he would open Fridays workout to the media. He also released a roster of 57 players, which included mostly players who had been cut by Denver in training camp. Reeves said his new team was thin in the offensive line and at tight end, and that the Broncos would continue to look for players at those positions.

Kay said he watched practice for some time through a hole in the fence and had this observation: They were pretty pathetic. Dan is going to have a hard time cutting (to 45 players). Theres not much to choose from, from what I saw. Seeing their technique and coordination, it looks like the bottom of the barrel. The picket lines have been manned by only about half of the 60-some Broncos on the active roster or on injured reserve.

Quarterback John Elway, for example, hasnt appeared yet. Player rep Ricky Hunley wasnt in evidence on Thursday. Running back Tony Boddie said he was a little disappointed at the turnout. We have more support from other unions than from the players." Some strikers said they were informed there would be no more picketing after Thursday. Kay and Hunley, for instance, were reportedly planning trips to Georgia and Arizona, respectively, starting Friday.

Other strikers, like safety Dennis Smith, insisted the pickets would be up until the strike is If, like the Giants and Rams, the other NFL clubs are forced to stock their rosters with substitutes, the bidding should be fierce for one out-of-work quarterback George Blanda, 60 years young. ancucgiwuaiij pcuua 6. This is a way to let the scabs know we dont approve of what theyre doing. If the rosters are expanded and some of them make the team, theyll benefit from what were out here walking for." Kay initially said he didnt throw the eggs but was merely in the vicinity. Later, when asked if he threw eggs, he said, Id rather not say. If you want to point the finger, point the finger at us all. The afternoon workout was closed, but Reeves announced that Kay and Freddie Gilbert were observed throwing eggs at marketing director Bill Harpole, who was covering a gate with a tarpaulin to prevent anyone from observing practice.

The cars of three Bronco employees also were hit with eggs in the parking lot Gilbert admitted pelting Harpole with eggs, but Kay hedged. I dont see anything wrong with throwing eggs or banging on bus windows or anything like that, Gilbert said. Some things need to be done. This is just a tradition. It was an honest expression of anger.

Player representative William Jud-son said the strikers will follow the same steps Friday. New England Patriots Defensive lineman Toby Williams threw a beer bottle at replacement players, who also were the target of egg-throwing at the motel where the free agents are staying. The new players had been driven back to the motel from practice by Patriots coaches and were targets of the missiles as they exited cars at the motels front door. None of the players was hit. Los Angeles Rams Two days of calm disappeared as the Rams picketed for the first time. Robert Cox, a second-year player, broke a backseat window in a van hauling replacement players into the training facility.

There were no injuries and Cox claimed afterward that he didn't mean to shatter the window. Miami Dolphins While the 46-man replacement squad began practice, striking players picketed, then conducted their second post-walkout practice at Miami-Dade Community College. Philadelphia Eagles Striking players blocked two busloads of replacements at a hotel driveway in Mount Laurel, N.J., as they were returning from practice. The striking players practiced on their own at the University of Tampa. The 14 National Football League games scheduled for Sunday and Monday Sept 27 and 28 will not be played because of the players strike, he said in a statement The league said it was unsure if those games would be canceled altogether or played at a later date.

At some point in time the parties might have to pull back and evaluate their prospective From page 1C doesn't mean players cant be playing, he said. Id love to see them back." Union chief Gene Upshaw, however, said the owners were unwilling to move on any of the issues. Management has taken the position they will not compromise at all, Upshaw said.

Hopefully, we can reach an agreement, but the time is not now. We havent accomplished anything so far. And Donlan said they probably won't on the free agency issue. I think all the issues are doable except free agency, he said. The union wants unrestricted free agency for players with more than four years experience; the owners have only offered to reduce the compensation.

We have an absolute difference of opinion on that issue," Donlan I 4.
