Sullivan of 974 E. 31st appeared on the scene.

Mr. Sullivan was alone early today in the kitchen of his home, waiting for Mrs. Catherine Sullivan, 54, to return after working late as a candy saleswoman. In the shadows just outside the house, a thug whom she later described as a six-footer weighing about 200 pounds, leaped at Mrs. Sullivan from behind.

He snatched at her purse with one hand, clapped the other over her mouth to keep her from making an outcry, and ordered, "Don't move or I'll kill you." When she resisted, he struck at her with a penknife and knocked her to the ground. At this moment. Sullivan, disturbed by shuffling sounds, stepped out and saw his wife stagger to her knees--and the thug flee. In his haste, the thief dropped Mrs. Sullivan's purse, which was later recovered.
