The Daily Sentinel Friday, January 6, 1995 Page 8A Unsolved Mysteries features missing rapist Smith TONIGHT'S TV TIPS One of the Mesa County girls told her story to The Daily Sentinel, detailing how Smith at first appeared friendly but then abruptly changed course to become a frightening harasser. Glenwood prosecutors described Smith as a sexual predator who manipulated the insecurities of young girls. Smith was scheduled to appear in April 1994 before Judge David Bottger to answer charges that he violated the terms of his probation. Smith never showed up. probation-violation charges.

In 1991, Smith pleaded guilty to four counts of statutory rape, one for each of four Glenwood girls age 12 to 14. He was put on probation in Mesa County, partially to separate him from his victims. The Mesa County probation department, however, found Smith wasn't complying with the terms of his stay here. He allegedly had unsupervised contact with two Mesa County teen age girls and missed required sex-offender counseling. A federal warrant was issued for Smith last year after authorities believed he left Colorado for Virginia to avoid being prosecuted on visions of a murder and then found the body of an FBI agent killed 40 years ago in a field.
