Saturday's momentous sojourn into Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium was an education in mathematics for USL's Ragin' Cajuns.

The lesson for the day: Commit seven turnovers and you won't beat many people. Not even a Crimson Tide squad that looks like it will have a great deal of difficulty carving its own path in the Southeastern Conference in 1984. Coach Sam Robertson's club entered the game struggling, but confident it could play with the Tide of Coach Ray Perkins, and indeed the Cajuns outgained 'Bama 278-269 and held the ball for almost as long as their hosts. But it was the times the Cajuns did not hold the ball which made all the difference. In the 37-14 Alabama victory before 56,431 fans, no less than 16 'Bama points were the direct result of USL turnovers.

Another 14 came via breakdowns in the kicking game. When it was all said and done, Alabama merited just seven points that coming with a 13-play, 70-yard drive to open the second half, a march that increased the count to 31-14 after a 24-14 first half and all but sealed the verdict. To be fair, USL's tenacious defense set up all 14 Cajun points as well, with senior defensive tackle Gator Bennett speeding 64 yards to score with a second quarter midair fumble, and a Scott Sibille fumble recovery leading to a six-yard Don Wallace scramble that closed it to 24-14 at intermission. All things considered, in fact, that USL defense played heroically in the face of trying times. USLRagln'Caium.

2:57 from half time by Paul Tripoli and, in the process of recovering the ball at his nine, Falgout has his right (lacking) leg buckled at the knee (he will likely face surgery). Two plays later Carruth runs in from three yards and 'Bama surges ahead 24-7; When Sutton drops a center snap at his 24, Sibille pounces on the ball (turnabouts is fair play) 1:02 from half. Five plays later, Wallace evades a rush and slips into the end zone from six yards out. Despite all their troubles, the Cajuns were still in the game at that point, down 24-14. But the stearnroll job the Tide pulled right after the break (capped by Carruth's third TD, a four-yard catch) snuffed that idea.

"We had some mental busts on that drive in the third quarter," said Bennett. The Tide had led Boston College 31-14 in its opener, and wanted no repeats of that 38-31 loss. Another fumble and another interception set up two more Tide field goals, and that was that. Can't Win With Turnovers "You can't win with that many turnovers," said Wallace, who passed for 139 yards and rushed for 90 against the hard-hitting hosts. "Mistakes and turnovers might have made a difference, but you still have to make things happen.

"I overthrew a couple of passes, and they made some good plays. Their defense keeps coming at you all game." "We felt like (offensive coordinator) Gary Mullins had a good game plan for this game," said Robertson. "We wanted to mix it up with passing and running, and to change formations as much as possible with triple sets and motion. I think we proved we can move the football. "But," he added, "you can't follow your game plan if you turn over the ball as much as we did.

Bennett, whose speed fascinated Alabama media members on hand, put his finger on the day. "We'll just have to keep practicing. Practice makes perfect. Our defense is good, but I don't think we're playing up to our potential." Bennett, who said Northeast Louisiana hit harder than the Tide, added, "It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to play Alabama, and we let them get away from us. I grew up hearhg about Alabama, and this is not the Alabama that Alabama used to be.

"I was proud of our kids," said Robertson. "They didn't give up, and I think they know that the outcome of the game could have been different if we could have held onto the ball. At least, it would have been more interesting. Tuscaloosa. Alabama recovered the ball.

Also in on the play are Alabama's Paul Tripoli and Cajuns' Trinion Smith (21). (APLaserphoto) CAJUNS COUGH IT UP The ball bounces between the legs of USL's Pierre Perkins (1) as he is hit by Alabama's Joe Godwin (90) and Ed Pugh (83) in the first quarter Saturday at Byrant-Denny Stadium in Lafayette, Sept. 23, 1984 17 "We made enough mistakes to last us the rest of the year," said Robertson of the three-interception, four fumble day. "You win football games with defense, a kicking game, and by not beating youself "We made mistakes in the kicking game, and turned the ball over. Our defense rose to the occasion to force field goals down deep.

Even with the turnovers, we were only down by 10 at half time. "They only had one drive all day." A quick look at a self-destruct mechanism: First USL possession. Wallace aims for Welton Morgan over the middle, is intercepted by Britton Cooper at his 49, and seven plays later 'Bama's Van Tiffin kicks a 40-yard field goal. 0-3. Third USL possession.

Wallace fumbles away to Larry Roberts at his 17, and six snaps later Paul Ott Carruth accepts a seven-yard touchdown pass from Vince Sutton on an obvious pick play. "It was definitely a pick play," said Sam. "It's one of their favorite plays down near the goal line. We would like a split crew (of officials) Bama doesn't need any help. But, overall I thought they did a good job and didn't have an impact on the game." Score A 42-yard punt return by 'Bama's Greg Richardson puts the ball on the USL 16, and halfback Doug Allen scores on the first snap to run it to 17-0, Tide.

Sophomore USL guard Jay Hebert injures his left knee on the play and is out for the day; Finally, a USL break, as senior defensive end Oliver Ford slams Sutton from the blindside, and Bennett is there to pluck the midair bobble and use his 4.65 40 speed storm 64 yards to a TD. Walking On Cloud Nine "I thought I was walking on Cloud Nine," said Gator. "We were just rushing the passer, and I saw the ball and just said to myself 'Go get Against Louisiana Tech earlier this year, linebacker Chris Jacobs took a midair fumble 26 yards to a score. Make no mistake about it, no one around here wanted 0-3.

And, most folks hereabouts would not have been happy wiiii just 1-2, if their Alabama Crimson Tide did not win easily Saturday. Their 37-14 victory over USL's Ragin' Cajuns was lopsided, but in score only, as the visitors silver-plattered the win with costly-mistakes. Still, Alabama Coach Ray Perkins was touting the company line. "Any time you win," he said, "it's a good victory I've never heard anyone call a victory bad." Maybe so. But Tide followers are used to their heroes ringing up 52-3 counts against the likes of USL, a lightly regarded visitor if there ever was one.

"We're still making mistakes that will be costly against the type of competition we face in the next several weeks," admitted Perkins. added. "He (the Bear) says you can't do anything wallowing around on the ground. "I watched Alabama on TV last week against Georgia Tech, and they were diving through the air, they wasn't making any contact just a brush and they wasn't tackling. "After the Georgia Tech game, I turned over to Oklahoma and Pittsburgh.

Oklahoma, with their red helmets and their offensive line firing out, looked like Alabama's used to. "Not today. Alabama hasn't looked like that." The same fan continued, "I think the fans would be happy to just win a game in 1984 vhich ain't happened. And, we've won just one of our last five games, the Sun Bowl (28-7 over SMU). We lost the two before that one last year.

(Continued On Page it) "With all due respect to Southwest-em Louisiana, our offense gave two turnovers that resulted in the 14 points they got." With all due respect to Perkins, USL turnovers gave Bama 16 points, and 14 more came via breakdowns in the kicking game. The Tide only drove for one TD. No, this is a program in search of past magic. "Coach (Paul Bryant spoiled us pretty good," said one Tide follower before the USL game. "We enjoyed the victories, I'll tell you.

A 47-yard David Brewer to Todd Breske pass gave the Bulldogs a first down on the Ole Miss 12-yard line late in the third quarter.

After three running plays made it first and goal at the 2-yard line, Mississippi's defense stiffened. On fourth down and about 1 foot, free safety Barry Wilburn stopped Garlon Powell at the 1-yard line. Behind Brewer's passing, Iouisiana Tech moved from its own 20 to the Rebel 12 in the final four minutes, but on fourth down, Tech went for the field goal rather than to drive for a touchdown. Ole Miss, which couldn't sustain until the final quarter, then ran out the clock with six running plays. By DAN EVEN Associated Press Writer OXFORD, Miss.

Ole Miss, 2-0-1, needed a fourth-period goal-line stand and some late clutch completions by quarterback Kent Austin to avoid an upset by the Division 1-AA Bulldogs. Louisiana Tech, 1-3, and a 14-point plus underdog, held Mississippi to one first down in the middle two quarters and had a chance to take a lead early in the final quarter when it was stopped at the Ole Miss 1-yard line. Linebacker Fuzzy Huddleston recovered a fumble at the Louisiana Tech 2-yard line late in the second quarter and after a penalty and two short runs, Smith scored from the 3-yard line. Leading 7-5, Ole Miss drove 47 yards in 11 plays its only consistent march of the day to score its other touchdown.

Austin had completions of 9, 11 and 14 yards to keep the drive alive. Smith scored from two yards out as he slipped off the left side and into the end zone. "Coach told us that it's a different atmosphere here," said Kentucky quarterback Bill Ransdell.
