grid playoff format grows from four-team beginning in '58 Since the beginning of the NAIA championship football program in 1956 there have been few changes. The latest advancement an expanded eight-team format which covers three weekends for both Division I and II provides: an opportunity for 16 NAIA football teams to compete for the national championship, compared with eight teams in the past. It was recommended by the NAIA Football Coaches Association and received approval from the NAIA Coaches Association Board of Directors and the NAIA Executive Committee. In 1958, two years after the NAIA championship football program began, a four-team playoff format was established to determine a national champion. NAIA teams played in one division until 1970, when the membership voted to create Divisions I and II.

The four-team playoff format was retained for both divisions. A survey of NAIA institutions sponsoring intercollegiate football indicated that more than 95 percent favored the adoption of the new format. Unlike basketball, where NAIA institutions compete in districts, NAIA football institutions are classified according to Divisions I or IL. When the NAIA divided into divisions in 1970, members could declare their divisions. The coaches review board has the authority to rule on changes within divisions and an institution is required to spend at least two sessions in a given division once it is placed there.

Within each division member institutions are arranged according to geographical areas: Division I Area 1 Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Area 2 Arizona, Arkansas, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Area 3 Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Area 4 Alabama, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. District II Area 1 Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington and Wyoming.

Teams must be ranked in the top 12 in the regular-season weekly rating (Nov.

6 for Division II, Nov. 13 for Division I) to be considered for the playoffs. (In previous years, teams had to be ranked in the final six to be included.) The top-ranked team for each of the four geographical areas (in each division) within the top 12 will be automatically selected for the playoffs. The next four highest-ranked teams, regardless of geographic area and not already selected, will complete the 16- team field. No more than two teams from the same conference (within the same division) may be selected for the playoffs.

(In previous years only one school could be selected per conference.) Teams may be paired according to proximity for the first round (quarterfinals) and members of the same conference would play each other in the quarterfinals or semifinal rounds. Teams with four or more non-winning games may not be selected for participation in the playoffs. DUNKIN'! DONUTS: $1 LAD 99 DOZEN DONUTS Cannot be combined with any other offer.
