When the school hired Larry Slemerlng as football coach and director of physical education, It was rumored that three or four games might be played this fall. Younger explained there is a difficulty In scheduling as most schools already have their nine-game limit. The new school will field basketball and baseball teams in the Coast Conference along with other spring sports. The blow came off Jim Coates, third Yankee pitcher, who had given up a run In the 13th only to have the Yankees get it back in their half of the inning. The double defeat dropped the Yankees into fifth place, 3'4 games off the pace. A sweep would have boosted the Yankees, who had won five straight and 17 of their last 23, into first place by half a game. fiv Joe Relchler AV Sports Writer The Cleveland Indians owned their biggest lead in the American League since May 26 today and they owe it to the determination and the strong right arms of pitchers C'al McLish and Jim Grant. It was McLish and Grant who slowed up the on-rushing New York Yankees Sunday by pitching the Indians to a doublchcader sweep, 4 2 and 5 4 in 14 innings. The victories boosted the Indians' first place margin to two games over Chicago and shoved the de fending champion Yankes back into the second division. The largest crowd of the major league season 08,680 Yankee stadium spectators sat through seven hours and 14 minutes and saw McLish and go all the way although giving up 25 hits between them. McLish registered his seventh victory despite allowing 11 hits in the opener.

He left 13 Yankees stranded. Grant hurled all 14 innings in the nightcap, winning his fifth as he yielded 14 hits, lie left 12 Yankees stranded. Billy Pierce pitched the White Sox into second place, with a 3 2 triumph over Boston that dropped the Ked Sox into the American League cellar, two percentage points behind Washington. The Senators climbed up to seventh by thrashing Detroit 4 3 and 7-5. The double defeat lowered the Tigers into a third place tie with Baltimore, which bowed to Kansas City 7 0.

Milwaukee's Braves opened up a game and a half lead over San Francisco in the National League as they thrashed the Giants 13-3. Pittsburgh's third place Pirates split a doublehender with St. Louis, winning 10-8 after the Cardinals had won the opener 5-1. Cincinnati walloped Los Angeles 17-3 and the Chicago Cubs blanked the Philadelphia Phillies 40 behind the one-hit pitching of Johnny Biwhardt. N.J. While Incemar Johansson played polf and swam with his fiance at a plush mountain resort, heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson sweated out 4i pounds in the oven heat of an oldfashioncd training camp. The contrast between the training methods of the unbeaten challenger from Sweden and the champion never was more pronounced than it was Sunday. Johansson finished his boxing Saturday at Grossinger, N.Y sparring six rounds without throwing his right hand more than six of seven times. He will do no more ring work until the fight Thursday night at Yankee Marlium.

Fatterson cut his work to two rounds at Fhsan's camp where about 1000 spectators crowded inside and around the tiny gymnas ium. Trainer Dan Mono saia Floyd weighed 184'i pounds when he started. After the workout, the champ said he weighed 180. In many ways the scene at Chatham reminded you of the old days at Fompton Lakes, N.J. when Joe Louis' camp drew busloads of Sunday visitors at a fee.

There was one important difference. No admission is charged at Fatter-son's camp. Somebody spread a rumor that there was free beer. The champ had planned to box three or four rounds. Instead he went only two, one each with Bill Tate of Chicago and Lou Jones of Rockford, 111.

He concentrated on defense but had to be called off by his trainer while battering Tate against the ropes. He also threw a fast flurry at Jones. Rockv Marciano, the retired undefeated champ, was at ringside. "This is the fastest heavy-Height I ever saw," said Marciano, who said he weighed 220 pounds. "I wouldn't like to compare him with Johansson.

I only saw Johansson two rounds Saturday." Meanwhile, back in the Cats-kills, Johansson had finished 18 holes of golf and a 10-minute swim in the pool with his fiance, Birgit Lundgren, and his sister, Eva. Newsmen crowded around him. Someone said, "Are you nervous with the fight close at hand." The handsome Swede answered quickly and clearly. "Why should I be? I am a professional." Eddie Fisher, who wishes he had tried a knuckleball sooner, gets his first major leaguep itching assignment today for the San Francisco Giants against the Pittsburgh Pir ates.

Fisher, who is 22 and a year out of the University of Oklahoma, thinks he might have managed to snag a hefty bonus if he had the knuckleball among his assortment of throws when he left college. He had an 11-7 record last season with Corpus Christ! in the Texas League and was 10 4 with Phoenix of the Pacific Coast League this year, including a one-hitter he threw last week against Portland. At least part of the reason for his quick jump is that the Giants used four pitchers Sunday in i futile attempt to stop the Milwau kee Braves who collected 15 hits while drubbing the Californians 13 3. That moved the Braves l'i games ahead of the second place Giants. Among the Braves' blows were three two-run homers cracked by Hank Aaron and other four-baggers by Johnny Logan and Del Crandall.

Johnny Antonclli, the Giant starter, failed to last the first in ning, taking his fourth loss against 10 victories Daryl Spencer got a homer for the Giants. Fisher, after being called up, recalled that "I didn't throw the knuckleball In college. I think the coach thought it was an old man's pitch. But I worked on it on the side and it sort of came naturally." "I had a 13-2 record in college. but some of the scouts thought my fast ball wasn't good enough," Fisher explained, "so I didn get anv of those big offers Milwaukee (19) San Francisco (3) ABRH Pafko.cf 2 1 1 Bruton.cf 3 1 1 Mathews.3b 5 2 2 Aaron, rf 6 3 3 Adcock.lb 3 1 0 Torre.
