They've lost 10 of their last 15 and have been shut out three times in the last five games. Is this the beginning of the end to their hold on the National league pennant? Or is this just another of those slumps, such as they had and shrugged off While winning the flag the past two years. PENSE ASON V5 NY Mayor's Group Chairman Says Announcement Forthcoming New York (AP). The chairman of the Mayor's Committee for Baseball said today the formation of a third major league will be announced between July 1 and July 15. William Shea, who heads Mayor Robert F.

Wagner's committee to bring another major league club to New York, said the league hopes to start operating In 1961. Shea announced for the first time, the identity of the chief backers of the proposed New York member of the third league. He said there are three groups involved, headed by Mrs. Charles S. Payson of Manhasset, N.Y Mrs.

Dorothy Killam of Montreal, and Dwight F. Davis, of Southamnton, N.Y. Davis Is the son of the donor of tennis' international trophy. Shea wouldn't name the other member cities of the third league. He said the backers of the clubs in these cities will identify themselves in the next few days.

This was said while discussing the recent action of the fish and game commission's deletion of the special archery season, which this column strongly opposed. To answer this, it is far from correct. The department and commission of fish and game are operated as a business, with the people of California being both stockholders and customers. We are stockholders in that it is our fish and game they are managing, and customers in that we use these resources. The fish and game commission is the board of directors, making the rules and setting the policy, and the department is the working staff tnat carries out the commission's opener 10 2, then were blanked on two hits by Danny McDevitt, another lefty, as the Dodgers took the second game 4 0.

That put second place San Francisco, a 7-5 winner over Cincinnati, Just one game behind in the "lost" column and within .009 percentage points of the champs. The sweep hoisted the Dodgers Into fourth place, one percentage point behind Pittsburgh after the Pirates' 5-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Both the Dodgers and Hues are only 2'i games from the top. Johnny Antonrlli registered his tenth win for San Francisco although he required help from Sam Jones in the eighth and ninth frames. Daryl Spencer and Jim Davenport homered for the Giants while Cincinnati's runs came on round-trippers by Frank Robinson, Pete Whisenant and Johnny Temple.

Outdoor writers act as watchdogs for the people by keeping close tabs on all phases of the game management's actions and reporting it to the readers.

These reports are evaluated and given in the light of how they will affect the sportsmen, and often an opposite stand must be taken from the department or commission. These people running the show are sincere and honest people, but they are people, and as such, can be on the wrong track some of the time. When this happens, especially on things like the archery season deal, the other side of the argument must be given. If you really want the truth, most writers would like to write about actual hunting and fishing, and not have to use columns arguing with game management. My view Is each, column means a chance to do some jnore hunting or fishing so I can come home and report on actual conditions.

That is when I can truly do my work and wear a smile all the while. But these other things come up from time to time and must be reported. Sometimes the matters are urgent and force a really enjoyable column to be held back. The department and the commission generally do an excellent job, and as long as that is the case, the column is devoted to where to go and how to do it. Gam Today Pittsburgh at Chicago.

Too many people check the pools and when they can't see fish in them, decide the stream has been fished out. This is the way of people who fish only for planters, and it leaves a lot of fish in the stream for trout fishermen. orc nv innings: SC Lumber 000 101 02 Hits 120 200 0 5 Adolph's 104 015 11 Hits 211 225 x-13 Ken Gordon and Ed Dysle.

Yet there were plenty of fish just waiting for a fisherman who wanted to fish. So there's a good place for trout fishing within a two-hour drive of Santa Cruz. Another point of interest is a screen that has been put across the river to stop the downsteram movement of the trout. When the fish reach the screen they are taken from the water and released again at the upper end of the park so anglers can get a second chance at them. Trout Planting Schedule This week the following coastal county streams and lakes are scheduled to be restocked with catchable-sized trout by the Department of Fish and Game.

Anglers are reminded that this list is tentative and subject to change, depending on water and road conditions and other factors: Monterey County Arroyo Seco creek; Big Sur San Mateo county Upper Bean Hollow lake; Gazos, Pescadero creeks.
