The jury this morning in the case of State vs. Sydney Grimes, and others, for gambling, returned a verdict of not guilty, and when the defendants were called into court, it was found that Sydney had "taken leave of absence." His guilty conscience evidently anticipated that the jury would return a verdict of guilty, and he is not to be found, to be informed of his acquittal.

This case recalled to many a case several years ago in which a white man was being tried for stealing a sheep. The jury, after being out sometime, brought in a verdict of "not guilty." judge asked if the defendant was in court to receive the verdict and investigation revealed the fadt that he had run His honor turned to the jury and remarked, drily, "Gentlemen of the jury, the defendant evidently knows more about who stola that, sheep than you do."
