..14 Arkansas 17 AlcornSt 7 Iowa St 7 La. Tech 20 Memphis St. 3 Ragin' Cajuns Pluck Cardinals nam raj Sports .1 Jbw mm AWrNr, Lafoytt. Sunday, Oct. 26, 1910 i 3 'We Needed That One' Says Smith It seemed a long time since the Cajun faithful had enjoyed such luxury, luxury which negated any chance of last-second decisions And indeed such riches had been rare As recently as last night's first half, fans were wonder ing when they would see such point totals again for USL.

How 13 points were scored before halftime is a mystery to most of the fans on hand, as the visitors served up four interceptions and the Cajuns three including a midair fumble runback) in a remarkable comedy of errors Added to that list were two missed field goals by the Cajuns' Larry Trussell the first from 42 yards away with 9:51 left in the first period, and the second from a point-blank 21 yards with 5:04 left in the opening stanza. Fittingly enough, senior safety Ronnie Nunez' second interception of the night set up the Cajuns' initial scoring possession, as he returned his theft eight yards to his 28 at the 9: 20 mark of the half. A 15-yard completion from Phil Reynolds to Rodney Smith reached the Lamar 40 for one first down, and Curtis Calhoun's fingertip grab of the next Reynolds offering reached the 26 But that was it for the moment, and so freshman walk-on Oscar Speer trotted forth and rammed home a 40-yard field goal in his first varsity try. Speer had earlier hit three-pointers of 42 and 47 yards for the USL JV against Lamar That kick came at 6:57. The USL offense finally awoke to smoke 65 yards in five plays just befire halftime, with Smith traversing the final six yards untouched on a pitchout from Reynolds.

Big play on the drive was a 443-yard aerial from Reynolds to Calhoun to theLU six. The Cards, made great use of the final 1:35 of clock time before intermission, using a 31-yard hit from Jerry DeTler to Alfred Mack to the USL 20 to set up a 37-yard field goal at :01 by Jamie Harvey. USL compiled 311 yards, to just 106 for the visitors, after holding a dominating 160-29 bulge at the quarter mark But the rash of turnovers nullified most of the advances as they had two weeks ago against Arkansas State It was the stultifying Cajun defense that established the control of the game, allowing only the one play to Mack of any consequence. By BRUCE BROWN Advertiser Sports Editor "We needed a big game like this, and we got it. USL senior halfback Rodney Smith, who had as much a say in the victory as anyone else on the team, was rejoicing in the Ragin' Cajuns' 38-10 1 ing ot tne Lamar car-Saturday night at Cajun Field.

"We didn't need to do anything different. We were moving the ball. The offensive line was blocking well, and when they block, everything moves out there We just needed to get some points. "I thought in that first half, 'Here we go but we got it in there after halftime." With Louisiana Tech losing to L'TA 21-20 and McNeese edging Arkansas State 36-28, the 4-3, 2-0 Cajuns sit atop the Southland Conference this morning a fact the Cajun obviously relished after Saturday night's win. Smith admitted in the happy locker room that his leg still hurt him, and that he "took heat on it" every time he stepped off the field Saturday night.

But that big win had him feeling better already. As is expected with a 28-point triumph, Robertson had plenty of praise tp pass around. To whit: "The defense kept us in the game early. They played great. The offense moved the ball, but couldn't score early in the game (sound like the 3-0 Arkansas State "At halftime I told our offense (here echoing Reynolds' observations) just to do what they did in the first half but get the ball in the end zone.

Defensively, we just told them to play the same." Sam said the TD to Calhoun early in the third period "turned the whole thing around," adding "The open date really helped us. We woorked on our fundamentals and a lot of little things that really helped us out tonight. We executed a lot better than we ha ve been "We had a lot of great individual efforts. Curtis made some clutch catches that helped us a lot He concluded with a smile, We now have the Sabine Shoe and Two (SLC wins)." By BRUCE BROWN Advertiser Sports Editor Finally A game not decided in the final seconds USL's Ragin' Cajuns, who in five of six previous games had not decided the issue until the last minute of action, decided the issue quite a bit earlier Saturday night against the Lamar Cardinals. Coach Sam Robertson's crew, held to a 10-3 advantage at half as 16,866 fans prepared for another nail-biter, stampeded out of the second half gates with a four-touchdown detonation and went on to a 38-10 triumph.

The victory by the 4-3 Cajuns raises the USL record to 2-0 in the Southland Conference and vaults Robertson's troops into sole possession of first place in the league. Louisiana Tech, which had been 1-0, fell 21-20 to Texas-Arlington Saturday night, while defending champion McNeese came back over Arkansas State 36-28 to open at 1-0 in SLC play. Lamar, now 2-5 and 0-2 heading into this week's trip to Southern Mississippi, offered seven interceptions to the Cajun cause offerings gladly accepted for the tying of a USL defensive record and the setting of a negative offensive one for the visitors. But the Cajuns had matched the LU giveways stride for stride in the first half to keep it close in spite of another sterling USL defensive showing. Then in the third period the Cajun offense lit up and rediscovered that elusive ability to score big.

The Cajuns blew the lid off what had been an unnecessarily tight contest at halftime with a 28-point explosion. On their longest drive of the year, Robertson's troops rolled 65 yards in nine plays on their first third quarter possession. A 20-yard pass from Phil Reynolds to Rodney Smith reached the LU 39, before Ed Blanco made his play of the night. Cutting back against the grain, Blanco weaved his way 34 rumbling yards to the Cardinal five. Two plays later, Reynolds hit a wide open Curtis Calhoun for nine yards and a touchdown at 9:10 of the stanza.

The next Cajun possession, begun at the LU 23 after an Andy Martin interception, was snuffed at the Cards' one when Reynolds fumbled away a snap. But the deep field position paid off, as a 45-yard Mike Marlow punt to his 48 was returned for a TD by the elusive Smith. Smith, showing flashes of his old form, darted past the out-kicked coverage and sped northward for the six at the 6:28 mark Speaking of old form, Abbeville's Barry Herbert flashed some of his old speed on the next two Cajun scores. The first came after Willie Allen had claimed a ricochet sixth interception (a negative LU record) by the Cards at the visitors' 34. Sophomore Dwight Prudhomme came in for Reynolds and rocketed a 34-yard bomb to the flying Herbert for a stunning 31-3 lead.

After another LU punt set up the Cajuns at the Cardinal 47, big boost to our confidence," be added in the steamy dressing room, after a 28-point Ca-Jul explosion in the third period had given 16,866 fans some breathing room for a change Smith, who has been bothered by a sore knee, a sore ankle, and a pulled hamstring in 1980, was voted the Offensive Player of the Game, by the media coverging the runaway To earn that honor, he scored two touchdowns a six-yard run and a dazzling 48-yard punt return), rushed 11 timet for 49 yards, and caught throe passes for 46 yards. Of the punt return, Smith said, "They just blocked." "It was about time we got one." chimed in senior corner-back Willie Allen, who claimed one of a school record-tying seven interceptions by USL. Two others were nabbed by safety Ronnie Nunez, the Defensive Player of the Game. USL Coach Sam Robertson said, "It was a delightful win. We finally moved it on both sides of the ball His reference was to the Cajuns' recent maddening inability to get points with an offense that gained yards until the end zone beckoned, at which point turnovers stepped in.

"We had like 311 yards at halftime." noted quarterback Phil Reynolds, who was victimised for two first half interceptions but threw a TD to Hmh HttisBk.
