Oscar Speer's extra point quickly made it 7-0. Then on the first real Tech possession, tailback Earl James Greer coughed up the ball when hit by Dale Thomas and senior safety Ronnie Nunez recovered at the Bulldog 22.

Four plays later, quarterback Phil Reynolds hit a lunging Curtis Calhoun with a 13-yard touchdown pass and the 14-0 bulge at 13:00 But the Cajuns soon returned the favor when Phil Reynolds' ill-advised pitchout on a busted play was behind Rodney Smith and recovered by the visitors' Kenny Sims at the USL 45. Tech could get no closer than the USL 17, though, and eventually had to settle for a 38-yard field goal by Roberto Dager with 6:30 still remaining in a strange first period. The game settled into a defensive trade-off for a while, before the Cajuns struck with surprising suddenness for an extended lead. After a Smith punt return, USL moved 57 yards in three plays to a 20-3 score. A diving Steve Dutnell catch at the 40 was the second play, and the third was a 40 yard scoring ramble by fullback Ed Blanco, who broke numerous tackles en route to his fourth TD in three games.

That came 7:02 before intermission, and even Speer's missed PAT failed to dim the blooming party atmosphere in the stands. The Bulldogs had one more drive before halftime but, characteristically, Steve Hartley fumbled away to Mike Dupre at the Cajun 24 after a pass from Matt Dunigan with 1:46 to go. It was a fitting way for that half to end, considering the offbeat start. it Porter ever scored as fast as did ihe Cajuns last night. Only six seconds had ticked off the clock when Selcer made his unexpected big play.

As his son accepted congratulations, Dick Selcer noted, "You know how many touchdowns 1 had in my career? One less than Mike, that's how many. They're hard to come by The Cajuns came by another score almost immediately, and went on to a 20-3 halftime lead before putting the game on ice in the third period before the largest crowd of the year. "Those touchdowns at the start of the game set the tone for the rest of the Same," said USL Head Coach Sam obertson "They gave us the momentum we needed. "Sometimes quick TD's will have an adverse affect on your team, but our defense didn't let that happen." That defense was spearheaded by co-Defensive Players of the Game Randy Thomas and Willie Allen, who had nine and seven tackles, respectively, in their final games at Cajun Field. Tec-h Coach Blllv Rrewer who in a By BRUCE BROWN Advertiser Sports Editor The grin on Mike Selcer's face said it all.

Selcer, the eldest son of USL Defensive Coordinator Dick Selcer and one of several Ragin' Cajun seniors playing in his last home game at Cajun Field, had an almost sheepish grin on his face late Saturday night sort of like the cat who ate the canary. The 5-8 safety was grinning thusly because the first touchdown of his college career had come too easily a gift too magnanimous to ever expect, but one gratefully accepted nonetheless Selcer was in the right place at the right time as 22,638 fans settled into their seats for the Cajuns' homecoming battle against Louisiana Tech, as he picked off a fumble on the opening kickoff by Tech's Austin Kattenbraker and returned it 11 yards for the first of four USL touchdowns in a 27-9 win. Part of the festivities for homecoming was the induction of former sprint ace and fotball split end Harold Porter into the USL Hall of Fame, but not even on a sustained drive, and that gave us all we needed." The victory sets up the long-anticipated Southland Conference showdown in Lake Charles this coming Saturday night between USL and McNeese for the league title and host berth in the December 13th Independence Bowl in Shreveport. USL will enter that one 4-0 in the league and 7-3 overall, while McNeese after a 35-3 rout of Lamar last night) is 9-1 and 4-0 The Independence Bowl is shopping for a foe for the SLC representative, but is taking its time. The decision will be reached after lunch today, according to bowl representatives late Saturday night.

Southern Mississippi is considered a possible front-runner. As for whether it will be USL or McNeese facing that yet-unnamed foe, Robertson concluded, "I hope the fourth quarter stands and our second half play will carry over to next week. I'm sure our game next week will be a USL-McNeese classic. rebuilding year has his Bulldogs at 5-5, noted "It's hard to spot a team 14 points to start the game, but that's the breaks." The Cajuns held Tech without a touchdown of its own until subs populated the Cajun defense in the final period, prompting Robertson to say. "With the exception of that one long touchdown pass, our defense played super.

The goal line stand when we were ahead 27-3 in the fourth quarter shows what our defense can do." USL had removed all doubt about the game with a touchdown in the third period, coming on a leaping 17-yard TD catch by Barry Herbert, on a drive helped when Tech was offside on a 47-yard Oscar Speer field goal attempt. "We knew we had to shut them out in the third quarter to get back in the game," Brewer said. "It was just unfortunate that our guy lined up offsides." Robertson said of the clinching march, "We really came out ready to play in the second half. They did just a super job. They moved the ball 80 yards host berth in the Independence Bowl.

Waiting in Lake Charles will be the McNeese State Cowboys, who roared back for a 35-3 verdict over Lamar last night to move to 9-1 on the campaign and 4-0 in the league like the Cajuns. Not since 1976. when the Cajuns won their first eight contests, has a USL team finished unbeaten at home. Ironically enough, 1976 was also the last time the Cajuns and Cowboys met in Lake Charles to decide the conference crown. McNeese won that one 20-19, and similar fireworks are expected this year, as well.

Fireworks were expected from both teams last night at Cajun Field, but it was the Cajuns who provided most of the sparklers. Two USL touchdowns had been scored both set up by alert fumble recoveries before the game was two minutes old. The first came on the opening kickoff, when Mike Selcer returned a midair bobble 11 yards for his first career TD. It was soon 14-0, en route to a 20-3 halftime cushion, and the Cajuns removed all doubt with their second drive of the third stanza. That march, an 80 yard, 18-play beauty, was climaxed by a 17 yard TD aerial from Phil Reynolds to a leaping Barry Herbert.

Passes of 23 yards to Curtis Calhoun and 12 yards to Zach Dennis keyed the drive. After that score, which came at 5:24 in the third, the Cajuns had only to preserve what was then a 27-3 lead. Tech scored in the final period on a 31-yard pass to Johnny Giordano from backup quarterback Kyle Gandy, but by then the season's largest crowd was already emptying out into victory parties. The visitors were behind 14-0 before they could turn around, as the pumped-up Cajuns converted two fumble recoveries directly into points before the chilled fans could settle in their seats. The initial TD was, to say the least, bizarre, as senior defensive back Mike Selcer turned in the play of his career on the opening kickoff Tech return man Austin Kattenbraker took the kick two yards deep in his end zone and decided to run it out.

At his own nine, the Bulldog sophomore had the ball slip from his grasp while changing hands. There to accept the bobble in midair at the LTU 11 Mississippi State Destroys LSU, 55-31 Tulane Over Tigers After the Bond-Ellis pass play in the first quarter, the Bulldogs went ahead 14-0 when Young, a split end, grabbed a fumbled pitchout in the air in the end zone. The Tigers countered on an 18-yard pass to flanker Lionel Wallis by Risher, a sophomore who hit 10 of 22 passes for 134 yards on the Bulldog defense that led a 6-3 upset of Alabama two weeks ago. After McDole escaped for an 11 -yard touchdown on the last flay of the first period, the igers scored on David Johnston's 28-yard field goal and Risher's 32-pass to Tracy Porter. Dana Moore hit a 23-yard field goal, the first of two for Mississippi State, but the Tigers tied it with 1:06 left in the first half on freshman run-ningback Gene Lang's 7-yard run.

Following Mississippi State's third-quarter explosion, Moore hit a 37-yard field goal and Lang followed with a 10-yard scoring run in the fo'irth quarter. back and you can't give a good football team points like that," said Tiger Coach Jerry Stovall. Louisiana State, yielding the most points by a Tiger team since Texas scored 63 in 1914, fell to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the SEC. The Bulldogs are 4-1 in the conference. Mississippi State wound up with four third-quarter touchdowns, including a 69-yard pass-run play between Bond and wingback Mardye McDole.

Bond had hooked up with split end David Ellis for a 50-yard scoring pass on the Bulldogs' first play of the game. After the runback by Young, freshman linebacker Bo Robertson recovered a fumble on the kickoff at the Tiger 13 to set up fullback Donald Ray King's l-yard plunge. Then, Bond hit McDole on the bomb for a 45-24 lead with 10:48 left in the third period. King added a 2-yard scoring run later in the period for a 52-24 lead. Mississippi State scored on its first three possessions for a 21-7 first-quarter lead, but Louisiana State battled back to the halftime tie as quarterback Alan Risher passed for two touchdowns.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -Tailback Marvin Lewis slammed over for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to earn a lethargic Tulane a 21-16 victory over Memphis State and a trip to the Hall of Fame Bowl. Tulane's usually potent passing attack was smothered and Memphis State rolled almost at will on the ground against the Tulane defense. Tulane quarterback Nlckie Hall, who scored a second-quarter touchdown on a 2-yard run, was held to just 85 yards passing. He completed eight of 23 attempts and had two of his passes intercepted. Hall had averaged well over 200 yards passing in nine earlier Tulane games.

Memphis State scores came on a first-quarter plunge by fullback Mike Dion, a third-quarter field goal of 30 yards by Rusty Bennett, and a 15-yard pass from Darrell Martin to Jerry Knowlton in the fourth quarter. 27 postseason game in El Paso, Texas, is the loser of the Nebraska-Oklahoma game next weekend, officials said. The invitation came after the 8-2 Bulldogs were locked out of any chance for the Sugar Bowl by unbeaten Georgia's 31-21 victory Saturday over Auburn. Mississippi State defeated North Carolina in a 1974 Sun Bowl appearance. After the victory, the Bulldogs gave a loud cheer in their dressing room when Coach Emory Bellard said it was time for them to respond to the Sun Bowl invitation. "I guess this means you want to go, "Bellard said.

"I'm glad we played to the point people wanted us," the coach said, adding that it made no difference whether the bowl opponent was Nebraska or Oklahoma. He said of Saturday's triumph: "It was sort of like a ping pong match for a while going up and down, back and forth. My textbook says if you score on four out of five possessions you'll be ahead. But it didn't work out that way in the first half." Young's thunderbolt on the second-half kickoff led a 21-point Bulldog scoring binge in the first four minutes of the third quarter that broke a 24-24 tie in the Southeastern Conference battle. "I felt I could bring it back and make something happen," Young said.

"We really needed a break then. It seemed like momentum was slipping to them at the end of the first half." "We came out just trying to eliminate the mistakes, but instead, they run the kickoff 18 42 212 16-34 1 3 3 7 42.1 9 85 First Downs Yards Rushing Yards Passing Passes intercepted By Fumbles Lost Punts-Avg Penalties Yards 22 112 145 15 30 0 3 1 7 35 9 I 10 327 McNeese Crushes Lamar 274 Total Offense Score By Quarters La Tech 3 0 0 6-9 U5L 14 4 7 0-17 in j-h LSU LAKE CHARLES, La.
