Costello Linked To Big Race Deal Continued from Page 1 agreed to go to work, Levy said, the complaints from the racing commission stopped. The questioning took place in a setting like that of a crowded television or movie studio, with cameramen, reporters and radio broadcasters jamming the room where a "who's who" in crime is expected to be written in the next week.

But publicity-shy gangsters, who may hope to avoid testifying on grounds they're not photogenic to 3,000,000 television viewers, will have to think of another alibi. The commitLee was ready to turn off the TV cameras, if necessary, to keep the witnesses happy--and talking. Prime purpose of the hearings was to spread on the public record the facts the Committee has learned about the New York to Miami, Costello gambling empire, described in the Committee's recent report as one of the nation's two main crime syndicates. "We will definitely establish connection the underworld and officials at between, the hearings," Alfred M. Klein, associate counsel of the Senate Committee, said yesterday.

"I can safely say we shall link Joe Adonis and Frank Costello with these officials." Adonis Among First Witnesses Adonis was among seven witnesses summoned to testify during the first day of the hearing. Others were Frank Erickson, big shot gambler now serving a bookmaking sentence on Riker's Island; Charles Lipsky, a Brooklyn Republican and friend of former Mayor William O'Dwyer; Jerome G. Ambro, Brooklynite and Deputy State Attorney General; Vincent Cassese, a 40-year-old Brooklyn man expected to be questioned about the policy racket, Erickson's son-in-law, and his accountant. Erickson had promised to be a reluctant witness. Last month, when the Committee conducted a preliminary closed hearing, Erickson appealed to the courts unsuccessfully to allow him to remain in prison.

Rudolph Halley, chief counsel for the Committee, said the first day of the hearing would be devoted to gambling and rackets. James Watson, Erickson's sonin-law, was subpenaed because he formerly was connected with Roosevelt Raceway. Costello, so-called "mystery man of the underworld," will testify tomorrow. He appeared before closed hearings of the committee here twice last month and, according to Halley, admitted he had "put in a good word" for certain political office-seekers. former mayor is scheduled to appear before the Kefauver committee in Manhattan on Monday, March 19.
