Owen says the news programming will be more national than local due to the restrictions of a small staff. The religious programming will be generally interdenominational, including such programs as Billy Graham's Hour of Decision.

Others tentatively scheduled include The Moody Church, The Back to God Hour and The Childrens Bible Hour. Music programming will be all gospel music, but Owen describes the sound as contemporary MOR (middle of the road). The programming at KJOL was set up by Stan Bruning, who previously worked at KWBI-FM, a gospel station in Denver. Typical performers that Owens expects to air include the Blackwood Brothers, Dallas Holm, Regeneration, Fisherfolk and Gordon Jensen. Some music by the Archers, which performed in Grand Junction last week, might be aired, but Owen said the heavy Christian rock sound of groups like Servant, which performed in Grand Junction this week, would not be played.

Said Owen, We expect the stations programming to be similar to KWBI." While KJOL will be interdenominational, the programming will definitely be evangelical, as is the Columbus will be Bible oriented, taking the Bible as the infallible word of God with salvation coming only through the acceptance of Jesus Christ Owens says that while some denominations may not be comfortable with KJOLs programming, the station wont be dogmatic about excluding certain churches. KJOL will be the second religious station in the area, joining KCIC-FM (88.5). Had KCIC been on the air when Owen and others were thinking about a religious station, Owen probably would not have persued a second station. But since KCIC had not gotten to that stage, Columbus church began its own drive for a gospel radio station. There will be significant differences between the two stations.

One obvious difference will be power. KCIC has an effective wattage of 450, while KJOL has 2,000 watts. Another will be the style of music played. KCICs format, according to Harlan Larsen, station manager, emphasizes quality music, choirs, quartets and Instrumental groups. KCIC also includes some classical music programming.

By Reford TheoboM Special to the Sentinel Howard Owen hopes this years Christmas will be cause for a double celebration. The reason? Owen hopes to have the valley's ninth radio station on the air for testing by Dec. 29. The station, KJ0L-FM (90.3), is licensed by the FCC as an educational station but will be air primarily religious programming. While the station is interdenominational and supported by an area church coalition, the licensee is the Columbus Evangelical Free Church.

KJOLs studio and transmission tower are on church property at 2711 Unaweep. Owen, the pastor of the church until July of this year, will serve as station manager. The idea of a religious station had been discussed for several years by members of the Western Slope Church Uinistries Association (WSCMA), an interdenominational group, but it wasnt until four years ago that Owen decided it was time to quit talking and take action. Because of his background in radio, Owen took it upon himself to spearhead the project Owen has spent the last seven years in Grand Junction, most of it as the pastor at Columbus. His radio experience came when he served as an announcer and engineer for KFEL-AM in Pueblo.

He also spent time in the mission field trying to start a religious radio station in the West Indies. The WSCMA serves as an advisory council for KJOL, but legally the Columbus church is responsible and will make all final decisions. The station has been financed by individual contributions and not area churches. Most of the contributions have come from within the Columbus church, but Owen stresses that its not the church building the station, but the Lord doing it Theres not enough people (at Columbus), so obviously its the Lords project. None of us could handle it by ourselves.

Columbus congregation totals approximately 50. Owen describes the programming mix at KJOL (which stands for Joy Of the Lord) as 70 percent gospel music, 25 percent religious programming and five percent news and talk. While some news will be devoted to whats happening at area churches and a segment called Christian Perspective on News, most of the news will be the 10.00 a SATURDAY NIGHT Host Simpson Guests Ashford Simpson 1 hr fDOOOOOSO news BURNS AND ALLEN a NHL HOCKEY Winnipeg Jets at Washington Capitals (2 hrs 30 min 10 30 (D BEHIND THE SCREEN Janie Claire sneaks Brian into her home, and Lynette confronts Evan about the threats made on her life a ABC NEWS NIGHTLINE a JACK BENNY 10 35 TONIGHT Guest host George Carlin Guests Sandy Duncan, Stan Kann (thr) BARNEY MILLER A shooting incident leads the detectives of the 12th precinct to ponder the difference between sex therapy and prostitution MASH While on leave in Tokyo, Henry becomes infatuated with a sweet young thing fresh from the States 1100 a MOVIE "El Cid" (Part 1) (1961.
