Miss Bethel Leslie, once the loveliest soap-opera heroine of them all, cm give them cards and spade-i. Bethel's acting, of course, has covered.4 anything and everything, irom movies through TV to ttye legitimate stage and now she has turned writer and idea' woman. She has created a children's news show she doesn't feel the news ordinarily interpreted quite rightly for kids and has written a TV pilot and screenplay in collaboration with Gerry Day, as well as a screenplay of her own.

HER writing is in its crawling, not running, stages but her acting career has been as busy as a bee lately. Bethel just finished a movie job as Sean. Connery's wife in "The Molly Maguires," she wrapped up a "Wild, Wild West" segment for television, and she's started rehearsing the play "But Seriously" with Tom Pos-ten for a late February opening on Broadway. She just doesn't have time to do any soap operas right now but there was a of Miss Leslie: appearing as film, "The Molly Maguires." IT WAS in November of 1965 that Miss Leslie joined the NBC daytimer, "The Doctors," as Dr. Maggie Powers and she remained there for two and a half years, or until she quit to do the movie role opposite Con-nery. Her move in '65 paved the way for such as Joan Bennett, Joan Crawford and other noted stars to step in and do soapy roles.

Writing now intrigues her, but Bethel loves to act and plans to go on doing it and in keeping with her diversification scheme, she never seems to have been typed. "I don't think producers have any preconceived notions of what I should be," she says. "At Universal they figure me to be the sad-eyed "mother. At 20th, I'm the glamour girl. And at Four Star, I'm the lovely western heroine." With its two larger network competitors, CBS-TV and NBC-TV, generally dominating the Says Retiring Pres. Of Penn State U. PITTSBURGH (UPI) Dr. Eric A. Walker, who is retiring as president of Penn State University, Thursday night said America is facing a crisis in the deterioration of the quality of our lives.

Walker, addresing the Penn sylvania Society of Profosional Engineers, said "It is time for the basic scientist, the college profesor, engineer and engi neering organizations to turn their attention to solving the crisis." "Is there any need for our cities to continue to exist the way they do with deteriorating buildings, ghetto living, over crowding, lack of open space and conditions so miserable for some of our citizens that both mind and body are withered?" Walker asked. Walker also commented on the curent state of education. He said it has become so cluttered that the idea of an educational system giving and little or no difini-everybody as much education as he wants and can use has I been forgotten. Pike St. Canonsbum I jg evening news audience ABC-TV in the recent past has attempted more and more to go its own way, to carve out its own special niche.

First it announced that it would be gearing its attention to contemporary matters in the social sense, in addition, of course, to covering the news that had to be covered. The implication was that ABC-TV, Here's ihe holiywood side Sean Connery's wife in the got into show biz without a single acting lesson. "The only show business connection in my family was an aunt who made one appearance in a motion picture and did one play before she was retired," she says. "What I've learned about acting, I've learned at rehearsals." Youngest of two children of lawyer Warren Leslie and feature writer Jane Leslie (of the old New York Minor), Bethel quit Manhattan's Brearley School to go into "Snafu," a Broadway play. She got her diploma, however, by doing homework backstage although the die was cast.

She has worked steadily ever since, shuttling back and forth between TV, Hollywood and Broadway. A NUMBER of acting awards have come her way, one of which remains her favorite. She can't recall what it was, but 'they sent me a two-page tele In Review quite as ordinary as some might suspect, It is true that these evening news reports give mention to a major sports event when it occurs such as a World Series game. But with the half-hour being such a relatively limited time in which to cover the world's news, previous attempts or suggestions concerning the inclusion of sports coverage have not always met with favor among key persons. The sports department at ABC-TV, however, has more weight than at any other network.

It has been a tremendous success, and an innovator of many aspects of network sports reporting. In terms of prestige, it is the single area in which ABC-TV can fairly claim frequent superiority to its larger competitors. Thus, while most televiewers will continue to get the majority of. their video sports news on local roundups, ABC-TV late this month will begin five-minute "instant sports specials" the network's evening news broadcasts. These five-minute inserts will be shown, says ABC-TV, when breaking sports news "warrants in-depth cover age." 1.

The next day I received a bill for the wire from Western Union. I paid it, but that really broke me up." Bethel's versatility really came to the fore when she was with Richard Boone's TV repertory group in 1963; she played a cheating wife, a murderer's wife, a woman doctor, a fashion model, a reporter and a murderess. As the latter, in "Statement of Fact," she received an Emmy nomination for Best Performance by an Actress.

MISS LESLIE had a ten-year marriage to director-writer Andrew McCullough that ended in 1962 and she lives now in a Manhattan apartment with her 12-year-old daughter Leslie "she's my favorite hobby" and a wirehaired terrier named "Toofer." Her brother, Warren has his own publicity firm and has written several books, including the controversial "Dallas: Public and Private." Johnson's Moving Recalls Memories Good And Bad Lyndon B. Johnson, the nation's 36th president, spent five years and 59 days at the pinnacle of power. Today, he was yielding the nation's highest office to Richard M. Nixon. Johnson hoped to be back hi his native Texas by sundown.

He is leaving the presidency with grace and style and poignancy after 37 years on the Washington scene. "He is making a clean break," said one aide. Johnson's final week in office was filled with drama, big and little successes and an outpour ing of affection by big politicians and little people They said he had been a "good president." The polls he prized so much, too much at times, were kind to him in the end. One showed his popularity had soared to C4.5 per cent after his State of the Union adress. So low in spirits was he last March 31 when he announced that he would not seek reelection, he felt that if he "signed the Lord's Prayer" he would be criticized.

As movers came and went, Jolinson, filled with nostalgia, savored the family's last moments in the White House. For him each room took on new meaning. His wife Lady Bird and daughters Lynda Bird Robb and Luci Nugent, both of whom came to the White House in their teens, felt the same way. Luci took her son Lyn from room to room, snapping pictures.

Lynda took her tape recorder to remember forever the historic home. Johnson has said frequently that he never regretted his decision not to run again. But withdrawal pains were apparent and no one knew it more than his family the family that drew closer to him under the pressures and isolation of living the White House. His wife and daughters did everything this week to ease the way out and to cheer him up. They showed him fan letters and filled his days with affection.

Then ABC-TV introduced a whole slate of columnists-of-the -air who, ever since, have been popping off refreshingly on their views of the world.
