State Division of Local Government Budget officers turned down an earlier county request for more 1976 welfare fund tax money and set a .65 mill levy ceiling. A letter from official John F. Tomsic said in no case will we support a request in excess of a five per cent increase.

However, Commissioner Tillmon Reed, county budget officer, said state officers last week called the earlier turndown a misunderstanding over budget forms. County Welfare Director Mrs. Kathy Critchell said a 1.55 mill levy was absolutely necessary to raise sufficient local taxes to pay for state mandated programs. Reed then personally pled the countys problem with state officials at a meeting in Denver last week. Reed said the total 1976 county mill levy with the newly approved welfare increase received state certification also.

The new 8.71 mills includes 5.87 for the general fund; .32 for both public works and employe retirement funds; .65 for the contingent funds, plus the new 1.55 for welfare.
