TEAM STATISTICS Durango Fruita First downs 17 jt Yard rushing 15 200 Yards passing so 99 Total Passes Fumbles lost Punts Fruita narrowed the gap briefly when qarterback Tom Reed scored on a six-yard keeper, after a necessary block from running back Louie Lynch. Lynchs PAT at 7:46 of the second quarter consumated a 11-play drive which covered 67 yards upon reception of a Demon kick-off. But Fruita 's inspiration was numbed somewhat when Durango marched 96 yards in 16-plays to score again for the eventual halftime difference. Halfback Terry Buhr scored on a one-yard plunge and Barnes ran for the conversion to provide the halftime bulge.

Earlier, a Demon penalty on Fruita kick-off pushed it to its own four-yard line but Brennan rambled 26 yards on the first play from scrimmage and Durango quickly utilized the breathing room, i Moments before halftime Fruita advanced to Durangos seven-yard line with an apparent first and goal situation, but a clipping penalty negated the advance and the Wildcats were unable to reduce Durangos lead. By GARY SCHARRER Sentinel Sports Editor No, Fruita Monuments football team did not chew on raw meat during Saturday afternoons halftime. Nor did the Wildcats scheme for razzle-dazzle play that seemingly was needed to attack a 20-7 halftime deficit built by a strong Durango team. They did vow, however, to tighten their line play. And that they did.

The Wildcats ignored Durangos impressive advantage by uncorking a convincing ground game in the second half (187 yards! to score 38 additional points. And simutaneoulsy, Fruita defense completely stifled Durangos second half offense. That combination led to a 45-20 win over the Demons in the Southwestern League high school opener for both teams before 3,000 spectators in sunny and windless weather in Lincoln Park. As a coaching staff we were disappointed in the first half," Fruita coach Paul Ehrmann said after the game. The whole difference (between the two halfs) was that the defensive and the offensive lines were sitting back and waiting.

We told them at half that we were calling the right plays. But Ehrmann also acknowledged an apprehensive feeling with the wide margin which Durango held. When youre down 20-7, yes, by all rights you shouldnt come back from that far down, he explained. You hope, but you dont expect that. The Demons unleashed shifty running back David Barnes and power runner Kevin Brennan who combined for 137 of Durangos 153 ground yards in the first half.

And their running keyed each of the Demons three scores. The visitors opened a 12-0 first quarter lead after a five-yard touchdown run by Bob Lobato and a seven-yard scoring pass from quarterback Collin Perkins to Barnes. Barnes, a 5-foot-8, 155-pound senior, had scored seven touchdowns in Durangos previous two games. But momentum soon changed entirely- Durango did tally one first down after the kick-off, but the Wildcats defense then rallied when it obiously needed to if it was to protect Fruitas No. 3 state Class AAA ranking.

The Demons were forced to punt and Ehrmann called that the real turning point. Our offense told them (defense) at halftime, you give us the football and well score, Ehrmann added. The promise was quickly delivered when Lynch (after gaining 26 yards in four advances) broke for a 48-yard TD run. The Wildcats drew a 15-yard penalty on the PAT attempt, but it mattered little after Reed connected with tight end Greg Marutsky (18 yards) for the two-point conversion that pulled Fruita to within five points, 20-15 midway through the third quarter. After Lynch made that run they all (Wildcats got excited, Ehrmann said.

Durango then lost yardage in its ensuing series and again punted. And again, Fruita mounted a scoring drive. Lynch, who finished with 184 yards rushing, couldnt be contained from his bursts up the Demon middle and Greg Reicks capped a 32-yard scoring drive with a. one-yard run. Another conversion pass from Reed to Marutsky made it 25-20 Fruita.

That was the best third quarter of football weve played since Ive been here, Ehrmann later proclaimed. And Fruita, aware perhaps of a sideline banner that urged the Wildcats to exorcise the Demons thoroughly thrashed them with three fourth quarter touchdowns. Lynch scampered eight yard for one of the scores and Reeds conversion run sprung the Wildcats to a 31-20 lead. Buzz Bigum then intercepted the first of Perkins three stray aerial tosses and that led to Reicks second tourchdown (another one-yard run) eight plays later. One minute following (with 6:40 left in the game) Bigum stole another Perkins pass and kept the scoring honors Fruita turns table on Durango; Wildcat defense becomes demonic V.

u-'U By DENNIS GAUB Sentinel Sports Writer Accustomed to bailing a turnover-prone offense out of trouble in previous games, the defensive unit of Fruita Monuments football team found itself in a new role Saturday. Behind 20-7 at halftime of their Southwestern League opener against Durango at Lincoln Park, the onus for the Wildcats first deficit of the year rested squarely on the defense. In three previous victories, the Fruita defense gave up an average 88 yards rushing, 68 passing and 156 total. But the Demons large lineman blasted gaping holes for their strong, fast backs to accumulate 153 ground yards. Another 52 in the air added up to an embarrasing 24 minutes for the Wildcats heralded defense.

The turning point was at halftime," linebacker Theron Johnson said later. The offense said they could score if we could stop them. Coach (Paul Ehrmann said it was time to see what kind of men we were. Durango had scored on three of five first half possessions. But the Wildcat defense thoroughly harnessed the Demons after intermission.

They didnt score again, and tailback David Barnes added only one yard to his previous 76 while his teammates netted a miniscule 11 more. And, true to its promise, the Wildcat offense exploded for 38 points en route to a 45-20 triumph. What changed for Fruitas defense? The defensive line never got off the ball in the first half," Ehrmann said, discounting any elaborate explanation. In the second half they did and the momentum changed. To defensive end Jon Decker there was a little more involved.

We stunted on every play with our linebackers except one in the second half, he said. I dont think they knew how to block our stunts. Johnson agreed and pointed to a psychological factor. The two teams tied 14-14 last year after a Fruita overtime score was later turned down. Remembering that, I think the whole defense was too uptight in the first of the game, Johnson said.

Everybody was trying too hard. We had to get revenge on them. Then coach Ehrmann said, 'forget about that and play ball, he added. Fruita 's monster man, Buzz Bigum, answered the offenses plea with two second half interceptions, one good for a 43-yard touchdown, and a near-miss at steal. Durango split end Bill Waters burned Fruitas secondary with a 20-yard catch that set up the game's first score.

Thats who Bigum was covering when he put Fruitas final six-pointer on a busy scoreboard. We knew they had to pass. They were playing catchup football and we were playing good drops. The quarterback was looking over there (Bibum's area and he threw his man, Bigum said about the play. Temperatures that hovered around 80 degrees Influenced the outcome somewhat, according to Decker and Johnson.

In the first half it was getting a little bad, Decker said about the heat. But weve been preparing for it all week by taking salt tablets. They had the bigger guys and In the last quarter I think they were all worn out." Johnson agreed, but said he prefers night games. Its a lot cooler." Durango figured to be a major obstacle in Fruitas drive for SWL honors. After the Wildcats' first-ever victory over the Demons, Everybodys happy its over with," Johnson said.

"We were uptight the whole week," he repeated. Reed, rushed for 61 yards, including a third quarter touchdown on a 10-yard By REFORD C. THEOBOLD Sentinel Correspondent Theres an old saying, Better late than never." Western States bus broke down on the way to Saturday nights game with Mesa and the battle started 25 minutes late. But by the time the "contest" was over, however, Mesa would have preferred the Western State humiliated Mesa 61-14 before a Lincoln Park crowd. On the opening kickoff, Chris Meier of Mesa fumbled the ball on the Maverick 20. Randy Davis recovered for the Mountaineers and Western State scored its first seven points three plays and 28 seconds later.

From that point on, Mesas troubles got worse instead of better. After Western had built up a 21-0 lead, head coach Bill Noxon called for an on-sides kick one minute into the second quarter to see if the Mavs were on their toes. They were not. The ball had skidded 20 yards toward a surprised Mesa line when WSCs Tom Giuliana pounced on the loose pigskin. Forty yards, four plays and 34 second later.

Western State made the score 28-0. Mesa's first touchdown was set up by a strong series by the defense. Colorado was in command from the beginning, although Wichita State held the Buffaloes to a field goal in the first quarter before the CU offense got on track in the second period. Then the Buffaloes used a furious offense, seemingly scoring at will and living up to their billing as the Big Eight Conference offensive leader. Wichita State took the defeat on the heels of two previous losses at the hands of Oklahoma State and Kansas State, two other Big Eighht squads. Colorado now 3-0, employed a precision passing game and a persistent rushing attack led by fullback Terry Kunz and tailback Tony Reed.

The Buffaloes displayed a host of offensive weapons, including McCoy's 99-yard kickoff return at the top of the second half. McCoy took the ball on the Colorado one-yard line, racing through the Wichita State defense and down the sideline for the TD. Colorado's on-again, off-again defense frustrated Wichita State, limiting the Wheatshockers to eight first downs. AP) Linebacker Kevin McLain keyed a brutal Colorado State defense Saturday night that forced six turnovers and shut down the vaunted New Mexico passing attack as the Rams claimed a 27-16 Western Athletic Conference football victory. It was the second league victory for the Rams, who opened their conference play last week with a 21-7 triumph over Brigham Young. It was New Mexico's first WAC appearance of the season. McLain and his defensive mates harassed New Mexico quarterback Steve Myer into throwing three interceptions and limited him to 13 completions in 31 attempts The Ram defense also came up with three fumble recoveries. McLain, who had two of the interceptions, pirated a Myer pass in the second quarter and returned it 58 yards for one of Colorado State's three touchdowns.

Another Ram TD and one of two field goals were set up by a fumble and a pass interception. The Colorado State offensive unit didn't score without help from its defense counterpart until the final period, when it moved down for a 35-yard field goal by Clark Kemble.
