ARKANSAS STATE ENDS USL WIN STREAK From One Of A Few To One Of Many Go Cajuns Turnovers Tell Tale ILsk 4 By BRUCE BROWN Advertiser Sports Editor From one of a precious few to one of many. That was the case Saturday night at Cajun Field, as USL's Ragin' Cajuns saw their 1982 winning streak halted at four straight by the visiting Arkansas State Indians. Coach Larry Lacewell's Indians, now 3-2 on the year, gladly accepted four USL turnovers in the fatal fourth period to register their second straight win over the Cajuns of Coach Sam Robertson. USL, which had only turnover entering the final stanza, self-destructed before 23,122 disappointed backers to hand the game to the visitors. It was an interception which set up the Indians' first score in the first quarter, and a fumble by USL led to the winning tally in the last period.

Teams don't usually keep winning streaks alive with such gracious gifts, and that held true last night. Senior Dwight Prudhomme drew his first start of the year at quarterback for the Cajuns, after his sharp performance a week ago against Southern Illinois. Knowledgeable of the ASU wishbone's ability to smother the ball with ground-munching monotony, the Cajuns tried to LOOKING UPFTELD Ragin' Cajun JLlM wide receiver Clarence Verdin (16) looks for to i running room upfield Saturday night against 23,122 fans. Third period play ended deadlocked, with the Cajuns' win streak still very much in Analarming trio of fumbles within 18 seconds of each other in the fourth quarter eventually put the Indians on top by seven to further threaten the streak. First USL's Bertrand Green fumbled at his 32.

Then, after a 17-yard Walker dash to the 15, Kelly bobbled away to Vernon Homer at the Cajun 13 as the defense averted another disaster. But Davis immediately fumbled back to ASU on his 17, and this the Indians cashed in some big chips. It took two plays to traverse the 17 yards, with fullback Maurice Carthon rumbling the final 14 yards at 8:46 to make it 20-13, ASU. Then, when Prudhomme was picked off at the USL 45 three plays after the ensuing kickoff, the Cajuns' backs were to the wall again. The overworked defense came thorugh, though, forcing an Indian punt into the end zone at 4: 27.

Don Wallace failed to move the Cajuns, though, and when Terry Falgout's 48-yard punt was followed by a personal foul penalty on USL on the run back (putting ASU on its 43 the streak looked thunderstruck. Rennick Tuck hauled him down 59 yards later at the Cajun 16. A third down pass from the 14 was tipped away by Bruce Jackson, and the Indians were forced to try a 31-yard field goal. McDonald promptly hooked it wide left at :42, and the Cajuns' resilient defense had dodged a major league bullet as the two clubs broke for halftime. Another bullet was dodged when play resumed, and when the Cajuns fired back, it wasn't with blanks.

Langford took his team to a first down at the USL 31 on the first ASU drive of the half, but on the next play Kelly was slammed at the 25 by USL's Arnold Turner and fumbled away to Breaux. On second and 15 at the 20, Waddell made a diving 17-yard reception from Prudhomme at his 37. Prudhomme then found Smith streaking at the ASU 35 and hit him on a play that went 59 yards to the Indian four with a downfield block by Greg Hobbs. On second and goal from the one, Davis leapt for six. With Speer's PAT, it was suddenly 13-13 at the 8:49 mark as the Cajuns executed pivotal combo of big plays on first defense, then offense.

The Cajuns missed on a chance to take the lead late in the quarter when, despite passes for first downs from Prudhomme to Waddell LSU, Vols Fight To 24-All Tie 1 Lafayette, Sunday, Oct. 10, 1982 33 leap out ahead early in the game by assaulting the Indians with a no-huddle attack after the opening kickoff. That idea came back in the Cajuns' faces when a tipped ball was picked off and ASU zoomed in to a quick touchdown. As it turned out, that miscue was a harbinger of things to come as the streak died. Even after ASU led 20-13 in the final period and was running out the clock, a beliguered USL defense forced a fumble at the Cajun 41 with 2:22 still left to play.

There was still plenty of time for Don Wallace to get the Cajuns a TD. But, after missing Clarence Verdin long down the right sidelines on first down, Wallace's second pass was swiped over the middle by Benny McGinnis to officially put an end to the Cajuns' hopes of preserving the longest win string at the school in the past six years. That theft was the fourth turnover of the period, and the final blow. The Cajuns' attempt at quick-strike scoring initially backfired as the visitors grabbed an early lead. USL opened with Dwight Prudhomme in his first start of the year at quarterback.

Going without a huddle, the Cajuns came out passing and went to Doug Waddell for 10 quick yards. But two snaps later a toss glanced off Zach Dennis's hands to ASU safety Henry Harris, who returned the theft to the USL 34. Sparked by a 17-yard Dennis Walker run to the eight, ASU moved to a touchdown in six plays, Waddell Kelly soaring over the pile from two yards out. It remained 6-0, though, when a high snap forced holder Mike Budak to try a pass for two on the PAT, and USL safety Dwayne Breaux tipped the ball away. In answer to that, Prudhomme took the Cajuns 77 yards in 17 plays for the equalizer.

Norris Hamm, Greg Davis, Trinion Smith and David Foret all picked up solid yardage between tackles on the march. Oscar Speer originally ended the possession with a 31-yard field goal, but he was roughed on the play and the Cajuns had a first and goal at the ASU six. On third and goal from that point, Prudhomme rolled right and, after Foret chopped down an Indian blitzer, threw to Davis for the TD. But Speer's kick was wide left, his first PAT miss of the season, and it remained 6-6 at the 5:35 mark of the initial period. Then, bridging the first and second quarters, backup ASU QB Rick Spivey ignited the Indians 75 yards in 11 plays to re-take the lead.

Spivey, who got 43 of thos 75 yards, did the honors himself, escaping the final 15 yards on an option when a tackle was missed in the ASU backfield. Scott McDonald's extra point 13:12 from intermission made it 13-6. With 2:13 left before half, ASU appeared content to run out the clock with that seven-point margin. But on second and five from the Indian 25, quarterback Tim Langford broke free on a wishbone option, reversed his field, and did not stop until the right Saturday night. Prudhomme hit 10 of 25 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown in the game.

Reveiz missed on another 52-yard field goal attempt with two seconds to play. On the final play of the game, Carlton Peoples intercepted a desperation LSU pass at the Tennessee 20-yard line. The tie left LSU to 3-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the SEC.

Tennessee, a two-touchdown underdog, is 2-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference. Freshman Dalton Hillyard ran three yards for a touchdown to give LSU a 24-14 lead with 13:15 to play, but the Vols capitalized on a fumble for a touchdown midway in the final quarter, and then drove 40 yards to set up the tying field goal. Reveiz kicked a paid of 38-yard field goals to give Tennessee a 6-0 lead but LSU jumped to a 17-14 halftime margin when 25 points were put on the board in the final two minutes and 40 seconds of the first half. Alan Risher ran 24 yards for an LSU touchsdown with 2:44 left in the second quarter. A minute one second later, quarterback James Britt picked off an Alan Cockwell pass and ran 44 yards for a touchdown.

On the ensuing kickoff, Tennessee's Willie Gault raced 96 yards for a touchdown and the Vols added the two-point conversion. Juan Carlos Betanzos kicked a 46-yard field goal with 46 seconds left in the half to give LSU a 17-14 advantage. Mike Cofer recovered a Risher fumble at the LSU 43 with a little over 10 minutes to play and five plays and two penalties later, Cockrell hit Darryal Wilson with a nine-yard scoring pass to pull the Vols within three. LSU sputtered early, it was on the verge of falling behind 13-0 early in the second quarter when Lifford Hobley intercepted a Cockwell pass in the end zone and brought it out to the 13 with 9:58 left in the half. Behind the running of Gary James and Risher's passing, LSU drove to the Vols' seven while James fumbled and Lee Jenkins recovered.

Risher's 24-yard pass to Eric Martin followed by Risher's 24-yard scramble run gave LSU its first touchdown with 2:44 to play in the half. On the next series, Cockwell's pass intended for Chuck Coleman was grabbed by Britt, who threaded down the sidelines for a touchdown. Martin returned the opening second-half kickoff 66 yards to the Vols' 34, but LSU's drive faltered at the 10 when Risher failed to pick up a first down on a quartedrback sneak. "We had one final chance with two minutes until we turned it over again. It was just a good football game and we came up short." Lacewell, understandably, was more ebullient as his team climbed over .500 at 3-2 on the 1982 season. "It was a tremendous game," he gushed.

"I admire our team. This is the way we have won our games this year. It showed the great determination on this team. "We've had to fight and claw all season. We missed our share of opportunities in the third and fourth quarters.

We were not used to this humidity and it bothered us late in the game. "We were giving the ball to our best ball carrier, and the ball was very slippery." Sam added, "I thought we gave a great effort, but we lost to a very good football team tonight. Our players laid it on the line, and we just didn't come out ahead at the finish." Said Lacewell, "I would like to congratulate Sam, because I know how It was for them last season to lose nine games and then have an outstanding turnaround." That turnaround gets a chance to get back on track this coming Saturday in Arlington when the Cajuns visit Texas-Arlington in a 1:30 game. UTA lost 17-3 Saturday to a North Texas State team that was a 31-14 victim of USL. ByBRUCEBROWN Advertiser Sports Editor USL Head Football Coach Sam Robertson was saying just last week how lucky his crew was to be a perfect 4-0 on the season, and last night at Cajun Field some of that luck ran out.

"We had a little luck on our side, I guess," said Arkansas State Coach Larry Lacewell after his Indians ended that win streak with a 20-13 triumph. Two of the three Indian touchdowns were set up by USL turnovers, the winner coming at the end of an 18-second flurry of three fumbles in the fourth period by the two teams. "I never saw so many turnovers back and forth as we had in the fourth quarter," said Lacewell of the mishaps." "We just wouldn't give ourselves the-chance with all the turnovers we committed in the fourth quarter," said Robertson of his team's two lost fumbles and two interceptions in the last stanza. The USL defense caused one last ASU fumble 2:22 from game's end as the Indians were running out the clock, but two plays later Don Wallace was intercepted and the game was in the books. "I felt that the last couple of turnovers we got from them gave us the opportunity to win the football game," Robertson said.

"A good football team will come back in the fourth quarter and make that last drive for the game-winning score. Tulane's touchdowns came on a 42-yard pass from quarterback Mike McKay to wide receiver Reggie Butts in the opening drive of the third quarter, and a 45-yard pass to Butts as the last second ticked off the clock. A twotyoint conversion attempt after the final touchdown failed. Tech, a two-touchdown underdog, is now 3-2 for the season.

Tulane fell to 1-4. It was the last scheduled meeting of the two schools, who began their rivalry in 1916 and continued it through the years they were both members of the Southeastern Conference. Tech, moving into the Atlantic Coast Conference, had to drop the old rivalry to make room for new ones. Tulane had won the last three meetings, although Tech held a 34-13 overall lead in the series. McKay led Tulane with 21 completions on 33 attempts for 269 yards.

Sophomore tailback Mike Jones got 88 yards on 17 rushes for Tulane, best night work for a Tulane running back this season.
