BROOKLYN EAGLE, APR. 12, 1949 BOOKS OF THE DAY Highlands of Scotland AND THEN THEY CAME, By Ann Bridge, The Macmillan Company, New York, 1949, 360 pages, $3.50. By ELINOR E. CLARK The Packer Collegiate Institute Occasionally one comes upon a place which seems to emanate a power or mood hard to analyze or to attribute to tangible evidences. one accepts without consciousness the pleasing places, and it is most commonly only when a shudder of apprehension passes through 1S that we become aware of unexpected influence.

And there are some places, usually the uninhabited headlands or' the densest forests, which make us feel that we have slipped out of our everyday persons and become misplaced in an era when the sands of time were just beginning to run. Sometimes that can happen in a place which has known centuries of human lives. where time and time again invaders have come and remained to be ploughmen and shepherds and the past is so old that there is no record save on buried stone. Ann Bridge, author of "Peking Picnic," "Illyrian Spring," and 'Enchanter's out of thorough knowledge of the West Highlands of Scotland and its people has now written a novel in which under a strange spell the ancient past and the present mingle. Legends come to life again, and the twentieth century characters find that they have morel than a distant interest in the Celtic past of the Highlands.

From Scottish Ruins Nora Congreve, a young English archeologist, goes to Scotland to excavate some ancient ruins of the early Iron Age. In any event, since you are friendly with the hostess, it was probably a mistake on her part and you wouldn't help things along by turning it down and staying away for spite. (Q.) Dear Nancy--While I was in junior high, and living in another part of town, my family and the one next door vere very friendly.

My parents, however, were not very fond of their son, as they thought he was irresponsible. After we moved, I didn't see him very often. But now we're in the same high school, we've become friends again, and he's asked me for a date. He really has changed a lot, but my parents said they wouldn't believe it till they saw it and have refused to let me date him. What can I do? (A.) If their only objection to him dates from his early teen days, why ask him to your home and let them judge the change in him for themselves? I to him that he drop over some night for a house date. You can whip up some refreshments and call your mother and father out to meet him, so that it won't seem like a third-degree session. And when they're convinced that he's the type of fellow they want their daughter to see, you'll find them willing to let him come around more often. (Q.) Dear Nancy- have that old trouble of not knowing what to talk about on dates, I have been told to be natural and chatter a lot, but since I'm quiet and don't know how to keep a conversation going, I stay home more than I'm asked out. Can you help me? (A.) You don't have to plan an evening yourself, or get the idea that the only way to be popular is to monopolize the conversation so that only your voice can be heard all evening.

You'll stand a much better chance of being called often and dated regularly if you turn over most of the talking to your escort. You can start him off by mentioning sports and doings in your high school or asking his opinion on various subjects. It's much better to be a good listener than a date who says whatever comes into her head, and following the plan of letting others talk will prove it to you. (Q.) Dear Nancy--A boy I've wanted to date for a long time pays a lot of attention to me by walking me home and calling me up very often, but he never asks me out. Now and then he brings up the question of whom I've been dating or whom I like, but that's about as far as it goes.

Should I continue to be pleasant to him and hope he'll get around to suggesting a date or refuse to have anything to do with him? (A.) Maybe he's just taking this time to work up courage to ask for a date. It's obvious that he's interested, but you'll put a definite stop to it if you cool down and turn unfriendly all of a sudden. There's no reason why you shouldn't date other fellows while you're waiting for him to get around to popping the question, and it shouldn't be long now. Miss Mottram wants to help with your problems.
