IP TOMMY HOLMES Dodgers Poured It On Rivals in East wiiiinwiiwm.u. mi iii i i win i. 11 i j.1' ON TOP! Since this is the eighth successive day that Brooklyn has roosted proudly on top of the National League, this corner's respects to the dashing Dodgers are overdue. Actually, there is a reason for that a superstitious dread cf slipping the lads what is known in some circles as a kiss of death and, in others, as a Mickey Finn. And so this looks like the spot to observe that the Dodgers are doing surpassingly well.

With two open dates coming up, nothing very serious can happen to them before Wednesday night when Chicago's Cubs open the western Invasion of the old Flatbush orchard. Unfortunately, the future of the Dodgers is not as bright as their, immediate past. Those western clubs will bring hardier characters into action than those who have recently associated with our heroes. One inescapable reason for the Dodger spurt has been the quality of their opposition. Nineteen games in succession against the Phil-1 lies, Giants and Braves constituted the most serene stretch of schedule the Brooklyn Club will experience this year.

They made the most of it, to be sure, by netting 15 Victories. DATES FROM SCHULTZ'S RETURN The Dodger drive started on June 5 after the lads stumbled home from the West, bewildered and disillusioned as a result of an unhappy road trip. Fortunately, perhaps, they had the Giants for a springboard and Mel Ott's melancholy New Yorkers were just beginning to fall in sweeping circles like a newsreel flash of a Nip plane with one wing shot away. Probably the big personnel change to spark the Dodgers was the tall and stately Mr. Steeple Schultz, who was waiting there at the Polo Grounds to rejoin the.

team. Apart from the fact that Schultz added another valuable bat to the Brooklyn attack, the out-size model first baseman strengthened two, and maybe three, positions. His return enabled Augie Galan, a meritorious citizen but mediocre first baseman, to return to the outfield, which, in turn, enabled Chico Olmo to shift his talents to third base. BOY SHORTSTOP Not exactly newcomers but strong factors in the Brooklyn spurt have been Eddie Basinski and Goody Rosen. Until a few weeks ago, the bespectacled Basinski was more noted as a violinist than a ball player.

I don't know Just why but the mental picture of the tall, solemn-faced kid with a fiddle tucked under his chin strikes some of the lads as excruciatingly funny. But there hasn't been anything funny about the young IHIW ,1 1 -1 If- PART OF DODGERS' FIRING SQUAD One of the reasons why the Brooklyn Club is on through but the six above have shown him enough to convince him that they have what it top of the heap in the National League is because of its young pitchers. Manager Leo takes. The sextet, left to right, includes Leroy Pfund, Vic Tom Seats, Cy Durocher never expected so many of them to click. He looked for one or two to come Buker, Claude King and Ernie Rudolph.

BURR But for Augie Galan's back-firing markmanship, the man at shortstop. For a kid only a year out of the University of Buffalo, he has done a remarkable job. He has good hands and a great arm. He makes one play as well as any shortstop I ever saw. That's the business of taking the ball from Eddie Stanky in the middle of a double play.

Basinski has his own distinctive way of dragging his foot across the bag on that one. (Note: the Dodgers lead the league in the double play department.) Basinski makes errors. All shortstops do. But he doesn't make many and he doesn't let a boot upset him. He hits, too.

RED-HOT ROSEN Rosen has been a ball of fire doing everything. The boy-sized Canadian veteran has been off on the hitting rampage of his life and all hopped up in the field. Yesterday, for example, he raced into that corner near the right center exit gate to make a brilliant catch of a long line drive hit by Phil Masi of the Braves. It was the outstanding catch of this season in the Brooklyn park. Actually, of course, every one must figure in a drive like this.

In Brooklyn's case, that goes for Walker, Galan, Stanky, Schultz, the scrambled catching corps and the assorted pitchers. LEO'S BATTERY RECHARGED And the dandy little manager, too. After a long lapse, Leo Durocher seems to like he did in yesterday's double vie torv over the Athletics before 37,745 Doners today might have a nine-game winning streak. The Dodgers have fire and fight, illustrated by their ability to come from behind and the late-inning storms they stage. Like our last team of champions, this essentially is a power club. The latest check-up shows Brooklyn with the highest batting average, most runs, most hits. If all hands remain healthy, the club should continue to score often, making pitching the questionable quality along the stormy course that lies ahead. No matter whether they do or they don't from now on, the Dodgers rate greetings and salutations.

If they never win another game, they've already furnished our town with more thrills and excitement than any one believed passible during those dark and melancholy days at Bear Mountain.
