Poppy Secondary school grade 8 boys basketball team ended their season last weekend by placing 3rd in the Upper Fraser Valley finals hosted by Poppy. In their opening game against Yale from Abbotsford, Langley made up for their height disadvantage by playing a strong running game and capitalizing on numerous passing errors by the Yale squad. Poppy held a 24-16 lead going into the 2nd half, going on to wiii 47-32. Gordie Minot and Keith Lee led the locals by scoring 17 points apiece, with Joe Lang picking up 9. Eventual 2nd place finishing Menn an i Educational Institute succeeded in downing Poppy in their second game, in a contest that ended 50-47, MEI.

Lee again racked up the high Poppy total, counting 24 points, followed by 12 from Lang and 6 from Terry McCreadie. In their final meeting of the tourney, Poppy defeated Pitt Meadows 57-49 with Lang almost single-handedly taking care of the Langley scoring as he ran up a total of 30 points. Assisting were Brian Montgomery with 15 and Lee scoring 6. The championship game came down to MEI and-Maple Ridge, a close contest won by a single point, 51-50, Maple Ridge. Poppy placed two of their members on the All-Star team, top scorers Keith Lee and Joe Lang.

OF LOODOn DRUGS Several teams playing under the banner of the Langley United Soccer, club finally got back into action last weekend, as time is running out for them to complete their regular season and cup games. In Provincial Cup action, the L.U. Happy Face Esso lost 1-0 to the Surrey United Devils, the irony being that Langley scored into their own goal. A semi-final in Div. 2A saw the L.U.

Oddfellow Lions emerge victorious by a single goal over the Riverdale Hot Spurs, 3-2 on feoals by Tim Bridge, Brent Owens and Neil Turner. The Oddfellows now go into the B.C. finals against the S.U. Beavers, who earned their berth in the final by defeating the Langley Sports Club 6-0 earlier inthe season. The last meeting between the Beavers and Oddfellows resulted in a 1-1 tie, in a game that ended with several fights and suspensions.

The L.U. Mark-it Div. 4B team lost last week by a score of 7-0 to the S.U. Alouettes, but returned on the weekend to upset the Whalley Excelsiors 3-1. That game was played on a field with ankle-deep slush, as the referee refused to cancel it.

Langley Legion put themselves solidly into top spot in Div. 8C by defeating the S.U. Hawks 1-0. A -forfeit by the L.U. Falcons, as they couldnt get a whole team together, gave a win to the S.U.

Cowboys in Div. 6C. Another regular season contest had the Div. 8B S.U. Cubs tangle with the L.U.
