Gossens punting was the big factor early in the game. Gossen averaged better than 41 yards per punt on five kicks and bested the Cowboys in a punting duel that finally led to SLIs first scoring drive. The entire Bulldog line played exceptionally well. None of the SLI touchdowns came on breaks. The Bulldogs simply out-blocked and out fought the Cowboys and it paid off with a victory.

Corbett was asked whether any other bowl figured in the closed-door discussion. There were no other invitations, he said. He made it clear that other bowl invitations were possible.

Dietzel earlier told the team he was proud of their showing against Tulane. When things got real tough, he said, you had it in the clutch. This has not been confirmed although Mississippi coach John Vaught said earlier he would be glad to play in New Orleans. During the regular season LSU beat Mississippi 7-3. Mississippi is ranked No. 2, LSU No. 3 in the Associated Tress poll.
