Poirrier picked up two to the three, Bayard got one to the two and Gerald Landry gat up the middle to the two. Bayard started wide on fourth down and it appeared that he was trapped but he bulled his way between two Tech defenders at the two and got in for the score. Land ry added the PAT to make it 7-0 with 11:02 left' in the second pe riod. Sevin Grabs Pass With two minutes left in the first half Robertson went back to pass from the Tech 19 and fired a pass that was intercept ed by Dwight Sevin at Techs 33. On the first play Bayard loft-ed a pass to Kleinpeter who was all alone in the end zone and he bobbled it and then caught it as he fell to the ground.

Landry kicked the PAT to make it 14-0 with 55 seconds left in the first half. The Canines wasted little time in getting started in the second half and drove 95 yards' after taking the opening kickoff in the third period. Southwestern marched down the field to the USL 47 where Bayard again found Kleinpeter wide open and hit him for 52 yards and a first and goal at the Tech one. Landry hit paydirt on the next play and then added the PAT to make it 21-0 with 9:00 left in the third period. Tech Gets First But midway in the period Tech got its first score of the.

The PAT attempt by Speedy Campbell hit the crossbar and the count was 21-6 with charging defensive halfback Bill Jones (24) out of the way to allow Bayard to pick up important yardage inside Techs 20 yard line, i Southwestern went on to defeat Tech, 21-12, and improve their perfect GSC record to 2-0. RAGIN' CAJUN ON THE MOVE Quarterback Bill Bayard-(14) rips around right end during second quarter action of last nights game between USL and La. Tech. Running interference for Bayard is fullback Steve Poirier (30), took, on By CHARLES LENOX Advertiser Sports Editor Southwesterns dynamic duo, Leonard Kleinpeter and Bill Bayard, thrilled 15,000 fans largest football crowd ever to view a football game in Lafayette, by defeating Louisiana Tech 21-12 to put a successful climax on Southwestern 66th Homecoming festivities at Mc-Naspy Stadium Saturday night.

It pushed the Ragin Cajuns Into a tie for the Gulf States Conference lead with a 2-0 mark with the McNeese Cowboys of Lake Charles who defeated Northeast 18-17 with a last-sec ond comeback Saturday night in Lake Charles and handed Tech its fifth setback without a win and second GSC loss. Bayard and Kleinpeter came up with the type of efforts that have helped make Southwesterns football fortunes soar. Bayard refused to be turned back early in the game and carried two Tech defenders over from two yards out for the first USL score and then hooked up with Kleinpeter for two brilliant aerial bombs that set up one score and tallied another. Defense Brilliant Once again it was the bruising defensive play of Southwestern that helped turn the tide of the game. Techs highly-touted aerial game never materialized as the head-hunters picked off four passes and held Tech to only eight completions in 28 attempts.

Techs orie-two quarterbacking combination just couldn't find the mark. Phil Robertson hit eight of 22 passes for 116 yards but freshman sensation Terry Bradshaw had a particularly rough night as he failed to complete a pass in six attempts. It was a rude return to Lafayette for the youth who sparked Woodlawn of Shreveport to an upset win over the Lafayette High Lions in the class AAA playoffs last season. USL attempted only five pas ses in the game and completed only two but they went for 85 yards and one touchdown and set up the other. The Cajuns rolled up 175 yards on the ground and 85 through the air for a total offense of 260 yards while Tech had only 103 on the ground and 116 passing for 205 total.

Gro Top Rusher George Gros led the hard-hitting USL ground game with 14 carries for 60 yards and Steve Poirrier continued his fine running with eight carries for 40 yards. Richard Golmon topped all ground gainers with 14 carries for 62 yards for La. Tech. The brutal USL defense started the first touchdown drive as hey caused Golmon to fumble on the Southwestern 44 and No-an Sharon recovered at that point. The Cajuns drove to a first down on the La.

MAIN ST. LAFAYETTE, LA. DIAL 232-2446 fancy offensive show by both teams. The defensive performance, however, wasnt anything to write home about. Duhon and Cincinnatis Tony Jackson, both junior quarter backs and both left handed, whipped their respective offensive units up and down the field repeatedly.

Duhon, who had amassed 128 yards rushing until he was thrown for a big loss in the fourth quarter, got even more help from tailback Pete Johns. The 170-pound Johns, a senior from Cleveland, Ohio-picked his way through the Cincinnati defense for. 193 yards. Tulane took the opening kickoff and immediately picked up a first down. Two plays later Duhon skirted right end, went down the sidelines, then cut across to the opposite side of the field on his long touchdown jaunt.
