Dan- -ny Clark had a 31-yard run in the drive, and Plant hit Garland Davis for 19 yards to the USL 34.

But the Cajuns rose up to, halt the threat, as Davei McRae and Abbevilles MarJ cus Wright combined to nail, Plant on a fourth down option- play at the nine with 13:55 remaining in the game. That was only temporary respite, though, as USL 1 quarterback Phillip Reynolds, fumbled away to WTSUs Rod Hanks at the Cajun 12 one play later. This time the Buffaloes stampeded in for a score, with 1 Clark barging in from the four' at the 12:00 mark. Theriots -PAT made it 16-10. In answer to that King' Plant fumbled the snap on a fourth down gamble with Dale Thomas recovering at the one at 4: 33.

Then, after USL failed to gain a first' on the ensuing possession, Roveto punted to his 45 at the 3:00 mark. Plant scrambled for 11 to the 34 on first down, but two sacks and a holding penalty shoved the visitors back and Theriot punted from the Cajun 46 to the end zone. The Cajuns sat on the ball Jor the final three seconds of the half, content to be leading and to get underway with halftime adjustments for the third period. Prudhomme moved the Cajuns quickly downfield for more points right after intermission, beginning on his 23 and engineering a march to the WTSU six before the club was pushed back. Key plays on the drive were a 15-yard pass to David Gray to the USL 39.

a 19-yard strike to Steve Dutnell to the opposition 27 (on which Dutnell somehow found the ball amidst defenders), and a 16-yard dash by Rusty Miller with a pitch to the six. But a grounding penalty on Prudhomme put USL at the 29, so Roveto trotted on for another three-pomt bid. He missed, but WTSU was offsides and Roveto drilled the second try from 41 yards for a 13-3 Cajun lead at 10:35. Early in the next USL possession, Prudhomme. took a high shot to the left eye while passing two yards to Curtis Calhoun at the 50, and was sidelined Kine took over from a 41-yard field goal for the initial points.

Prudhomme hit two passes on the drive, and Rodney Smith ran for a key first down at the visitors' 26. On the next USL possession, Hal King replaced Prudhomme and was intercepted on his third pass try at his 40 by the Buffs Thompson Mayberry. But WTSU, despite a 16-yard run by quarterback Larry Thompson to the USL 17, stalled and called on Press Theriot for a field goal. His 36-yard boot was true and it was tied 3-3 with 2:52 left in the quarter. Two key plays worked to the Cajuns advantage early in the second period, leading to an easy touchdown.

First, Thompson was sacked and knocked out of the game at his 37 by Dale Thomas. Then on fourth down, a center snap sailed high over Theriots head as he was back to punt at his 25. He scrambled back and got the ball at his 16. but was swarmed over and coughed up the ball to Danny Williams at that point. Smith wasted little time-racking up his first TD of the campaign, breaking off right tackle for a 16-yard scoring burst 12:56 from intermission.

Rovetos extra point made it 10-3, USL. Two sterling defensive stands by the Cajuns followed, preserving that margin. On the first, reserve WTSU quarterback Clint Plant had marched his club from the Buffalo 32 to a first down at the Cajun 10. Three plays gained to the one foot line, from which point the nervous ByBRUCEBROWN Advertiser Sports Editor Three is half of six, but the scoreboard said almost two-to-one. and USL's Ragin Cajuns will settle for that after a hard-fought 19-10 victory over West Texas State Saturday night.

Four times the Cajuns had to settle for John Roveto field goals instead of touchdowns, but that proved to be the difference as a determined defense came through before 20,145 fans at Cajun Field. Roveto hit from 41, 41, 31, and 28 yards, and halfback Rodney Smith dashed 16 yards for the lone USL TD of the night. The rest was up to the defense. Led by Defensive Player of the Game Marcus Wright of Abbeville, who had 10 total tackles and two traps for 24 yards in Buffalo losses, the Cajuns came through under pressure. After WTSUs Press Theriot missed a 29-yard field goal with 4:08 left in the game, Smith fumbled the ball away at his 19 to Kelley Brown.

In four plays, the Buffaloes could only reach the 14, as the clock blinked 2:40: Then, as if to further challenge the defense, USLs Offense first lost eight yards, then fumbled when quarterback Hal King was hit at the two. Larry Moore got that bobble 1 :58 from games end. By the time the onrushing Cajun defense got through with the WTSU attack at that point, the final visitors thread had vanished under a hard rush by Mike Buckles and company at the 20 with 49 seconds on the clock. That, finally, put a lid on the Cajuns second victory in four games, and their second in as many Cajun Field appearances. It was a win marked by early offensive thrusts by the Cajuns, by the exit of both starting quarterbacks by minor injury, and by persistent defensive performance from USL.

The quick lead by USL of 3-0 had fans thinking BIG WIN, but it quickly settled down to a much tigher game between evenly-matched opponents. Because of the Buffaloes defensive practice of shuffling players into the game while an offense is in the huddle, the Cajuns began their first drive under Prudhomme calling plays at the line. Although it took a 12-yard fake punt run by Ed Blanco to the WTSU 43 to keep the drive alive, USL moved 55 yards to take a 3-0 lead at 8:51 of the first period. (AP) Senior quarterback David Woodley passed for 125 yards and ran lor two touchdowns Saturday night as Louisiana State University rolled over all but helpless Rice 47-3 in a college football game. Rice was able to drive out of its own territory only twice in the entire game. Its lone three points came on a 36-yard field goal by Wes Hansen after an LSU fumble on the opening kickoff. Defensive end Lyman White led the aggressive LSU defense, twice stopping Rice Selcer's 'D' Did The Job rushes cold on key downs and batting down a Randy Hertel pass on another attempt at a third-down conversion. Leading rusher for the night wasLSU tailback Hokie Gajan who picked up 118 yards on 19 carries.

Woodley hit on seven of 11 passes, sharing time at quarterback with Steve Ensm-, inger who hit four of seven passes for 65 yards. The night's longest run was a 56-yara touchdown sprint by third string fullback Lester Dunn. Freshman kicker Don Bar-thel booted field goals of 28 yards and 31 yards for LSU. Gajan ran one in from 26 yards out for a score; Woodley scored on runs of 20 yards and two yards; fullback Jude Hernandez ran one in from eight yards out; and third string tailback Jesse Myles scored on a 21-yard run late in the third quarter. Rice is now 1-2 for the season, and LSU is 2-0.

It was a disappointing night for Hertel who finished with five completions and 16 attempts for 47 yards. He left the game early in the fourth quarter after going down under a mean pass rush. Hertel came into the game Special To The Advertiser JONESBORO Lee Charles Wright, the first true freshman to start for Arkansas State University in 29 years, began to fulfill his promise here Saturday night as he scampered 51 yards with 2:22 left on the clock to clinch a hard-fought 24-16 victory for the Indians over the Salukis of Southern Illinois. A crowd of 16,801 watched as the Indians reversed their game pattern of the first two contests. In those outings, ASU managed but 10 second half points, but came from behind against SIU for 17 big points in the final two frames for the victory.

Wrights scintillating scamper came after a 22-yard field goal by Doug Dobbs had put the Indians ahead to stay at 17-16 early the final quarter. Coach Larry Lacewell said of the nip and tuck affair, "We make em exciting. Thats the only way you can get the crowd back, And exciting it was. The Indians started doleful ly. making early mistakes and found themselves behind 13-0 midway through the second quarter.

They put a damper on our game plan. We fumbled away early and got outselves in trouble, but we made our mistakes early, rather than late, this week, Lacewell commented. The Salukis got the scoring started on a 19-yard strike from John Cernak to Larry Kavanaugh after starting from the Indian 32 following a fumble by Wright. They added three more on a field goal by Paul Molla from 33 yards out. Another fumble," this time by Anthony Williams, gave SIU another chance and the Salukis took advantage.

The Bobble took place on the ASU 23 and four plays later Molla added another three with a field goal from the 43. The Indians began to come alive with only five minutes left in the first half as they marched 80 yards for a score with Gene Bradley, the ASU quarterback, faking over from the one-yard line. The fact that we play two units throughout the game really helped us, he said. Our second unit guys can come in and give the other guys a blow. The (Joe) Kelly and the (Evans) Howells coming in really give us a lift.

The play of Abbevilles Marcus Wright didnt hurt, either, as he contributed 10 tackles and two sacks to the Cajun cause and earned Defensive Player of the Game laurels. "Marcus runs well. Selcer noted. "His speed allows him to make up for some of the freshman mistakes hes going to make. Down the road, hes going to be a damn good player for us.

Also providing a much-needed boost was the home crowd of 20,145, which pumped up the team for a win. "We get emotionally high at home, Selcer agreed. I dont know what it is, but our fans really get our players charged up. It gives us great confidence at home in our abilities. With that home crowd behind them, our players continued to stimulate themselves to play better throughout the game.

Selcer added that Andy Martin, safety David Pingston, cornerback Michael Dupre, and Cathedral-Carmel linebacker Danny Williams all had key roles in the defensive surge that bailed out the home club before that aroused home crowd. Im happy, he nodded. "But I missed some containment out there that could have cost us. Our coaches know their stuff. They had West Texas scouted well.

"All we had to do was execute. What of those goal line stands? "You just have to go all out, at the same time remembering your defensive responsibilities, he shrugged. "Our team hustled tonight on offense and defense. Two late fumbles deep in Cajun territory made the task all the more difficult for the defense, and quarterback Hal King explained both bobbles. "On the first fumble, I was supposed to check off to a wide play when I saw that defense, he said.

"I ran a play off tackle Dont ask me why. 1 put the ball into Rodneys (Smith) stomach, but they made a good play. "On the second one, I was supposed to keep the ball but their guy the defensive end or tackle came through on a great play and put his helmet in the ball. Dwight Prudhomme started the game at QB for USL, but caught a fist the eye and was through midway through the third period. I was still up when the guy got me with his fist, said the Lafayette High product.

"I was not pleased with my performance overall, but we moved well at times. "The (16-yard) touchdown run by Rodney (Smith) was a perfect call by Coach Don Smith. Four times the Cajuns had to settle for three points instead of touchdowns, but John Roveto made all four tries with 41, 41, 31. and 28-yard field goals (the second time his career he has booted four). And with the Cajun defense playing like it was, the four FGs and one TD run by Smith were enough for win 2.
