The lights refused to go on, but tne scoreboard lit up regularly here Saturday night as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane outscored a rallying band of Ragin Cajuns from USL 28-20. Some 17,500 fans sat total confusion as the games kickoff neared, and neither team took the field to begin the contest.

The three points got USL within range at 14-3. Other opportunites to get closer soon presented themselves early in the third quarter. A John Roveto punt was hobbled by Johns at his 43, and Marvin Parsons recovered there. But the USL despite a 13-yard Chatman run and a 16-yard pass to the 17 from Hal King to Curtis Calhoun, stalled at the 21 and Roveto lined up a field goal try. However, it was a fake and David Guidrys pass was incomplete.

Tulsas Quinn Jones gave the ball right back, though, as his fumble was recovered at the TU 36 by Rodney Breaux. A dead ball foul on the play set the Cajuns up at the 21, and they could reach only the 19. Roveto was true from 37 yards away on a true field goal attempt, one that drew USL within 14-6 at 9:01 of the period. Two Tulsa possessions later, the Hurricane sped 61 yards in five plays to make it 21-6, with a 45-yard ramble by Sessions to the one, setting up his own TD plunge at 3:27. Suddenly, the Cajuns sprang to life after Smith ran the first play 22 yards to his 42.

After an incompletion, Prudhomme scrambled and found Doug Waddell for 32 big yards to the TU 26. Waddell make a twisting "grab' with a defender rightat On a third arxj eight at the 24, Prudhomme-Mspeared Calhoun over ihe middle on the same play that worked for a TD against Northeast in Game One with the same results Calhoun rambled into the end zone with 2:35 on the clock. Tammariello then went for two, and the play may have been the highlight of the eventing to that point Phillip Reynolds faked into the line and, facing away from the line of scrimmage, casually tossed a two-hand pass over his head to Mike Calhoun for the points that made it 21-14. The play is one the Cajuns have been working on for three weeks in practice. Coming right back, TU reached field goal range.

A 31-yard dash to the USL 32 by the usually immobile Blankenship was the key, but kicker Stu Crum was wide left on a 47-yard kick just into the final stanza. Not to be outdone, USL rode the passing of Prudhomme and the rushes of Chatman and Smith into three-point range on their next march. After reaching the 24, a dump of Chatman at the 30 brought on Roveto for a 47-yard field goal try that was also wide left with 9:30 to go in the contest. Woodley, Defense Key 4 Advertiser, Lafayette, ficials and press members knew all too well, was that the stadium lights at Skelly Stadium had blown a fuse. Finally, after a 45-minute delay, half of the lighting was on and the scoreboards were functional, and so the two kicked it off.

While the Cajuns fell to their second consecutive road defeat, they gave the home team fits with a variety of quarterbacks, plays, and ways to stay close to a heavy favorite. Tulsa committed 10 fumbles, losing four, and needed two quarterbacks during significant action, as starter Kenny Jackson suffered a bruised shoulder and Bill Blankenship was needed. USL Coach Augie Tam-mariello used Hal King, Phillip Reynolds, and Dwight Prudhomme, with varying degrees of success. Prudhomme threw for two touchdowns, the last a 40-yard bomb to Kevin Sigue with 17 seconds on the game clock. The play was set up when TU fumbled while trying to run out the clock with a 28-14 lead.

Purdhomme scrambled and launched his rocket toward David Gray and Sigue, with Sigue snaring the score. A two-point pass try tailed, leaving the final score 28-20. Tulsa had scored with a minute to play to remove all doubt when Paul Roberson ripped free for a 30-yard touchdown romp. That score followed two missed field goal tries one by each team after USL drew within 21-14 on a 24-yard TD toss from Prudhomme to Curtis Calhoun and a wild two-point circus play from Reynolds to Mike Hoffman. The Cajuns showed remarkable offensive resourcefulness, considering the long wait before kickoff and the toughness of the home clubs defense.

But the Hurricane, with Roberson and Kenneth Sessions each gaining over 100 yards overland, had too many guns this night. The hosts wasted little time shedding some light on the pregame atmosphere, moving 66 yards in seven plays with their first possession to claim an early 7-0 lead. Colorado finally showed some offensive punch in the third Frizzells interception led to an LSU touchdown only five plays later and a 21-0 lead. Woodley got the score on a keeper off left tackle good for 6 yards. Later in the quarter, Don Barthel kicked a 32-yard field goal for a 24-0 lead. A fumbled punt return at the Colorado nine gave LSU a quick touchdown in the final quarter. After Cyphers was sacked on a fourth-down play near midfield, LSU struck quickly for another score.

Myles capped the drive by running 5 yards with a pitchout with 9:53 left to play. The Tigers got their" final tally following an interception by linebacker Albert Richardson, and Myles ran 1 yard for the TD. 7 if i'n- 1 3 fi kh 5 i ft if) a -B 3 3 3 he 7" 9 9 Jl 'A a lA a A 8 A 3 A VI iJ 4 2 A -il Sunday, Sept. 16, 1979 65 jitterbug runner than as a passer of any accomplished record, came out firing with eight and 19-yard completions to Scott Fenton and Paul Johns. With Rodney Smiths 30-yard kickoff return to his 34 serving as impetus, the Cajuns used a 16-yard pass from Hat King to Kevin Sigue and an 18-vard run bv David Chatman to get to the TU 33. But penalty struck much as it did last week at Southern Illinois, as a holding penalty pushed the Cajuns back out of range and forced a punt. After Dave McRae thwarted one TU drive with an interception at his 10, the Hurricane increased its bulge jn the second period with a 10-play, 52-yard march. The drive followed a USL stall-out after pickoff. 9- Key plays were a 15-yard dead ball personal foul on the Cajun defense, and an 18-yard Sessions' ramble to the 18.

Facing a third and goal at the one, Jacksons quickness enabled him to option off Rodney Breaux and dance into the end zone for a 14-0 lead at 8:31 of the second quarter. Bill Blankenship, who has been out with an injury and who was victimized by McRae on the earlier pickoff, proved friendly again at his 23, giving the ball up to Jeff Tanguis on a fumble. But after Dwight Prudhomme hit Sigue for 11 yards to the 12, he himself fumbled the ball away on a quarterback sneak, with Mike Menefee recovering at his six 5:04 from intermission. Tulsa was apparently again in business, but another Blankenship toss was swiped by cornerback Mack Scott at his 24 at :59. Prudhomme was unable to negotiate a first down, but a 19-yard lake punt run by Ed Blanco ith a 15-yard dead ball foul tacked on put the Cajuns aj the TU 32.

must go on, but not always football. I didnt want to play the game under the conditions said Tammariello. We had to work with the dark in front of us and the (Tulsa) band behind us. To be sure, ideal conditions were left behind when the sun went low in the west, but to their credit, Augies troops put in a solid effort against a team many picked to win. "We did some good things and some things we did badly, Tammariello hedged.

We scored 20 points on a team that had only allowed one touchdown to be scored on thern. We came from behind with a touchdown and didnt give up. Weve got some competitors and the potential to get better. We got off the ball well on offense. On the other hand, USL allowed Tulsa 330 yards on the ground and 28 points to a club that had been sputtering in its attack.

"You cant beat people if you dont stop them, was Tammariellos succinct summation. TUs Kenneth Sessions and Paul Roberson rushed for 115 and 144 yards respectively, and two home team quarterbacks hit for 88 yards worth of passes on nine-of-13 accuracy. That was a switch from the first two weeks, when the Cajuns defense was tested by an ineffective USL offense, this time around, the Cajuns rushed for 128 stripes and passed for 201 for an improved total offense figure of 329. The 44 points represented the largest LSU output in an opening game since 1930. The loss was the worst for Colorado since a 47-0 loss to Army in 1947, and the setback dropped the Chuck Fairbanks-coached Buffaloes to 0-2. LSU dominated throughout, moving to a 14-0 halftime lead, then taking advantage of three Colorado turnovers to tack on as many more touchdowns in the second half. Woodley, sharing time with Steve Ensminger, engineered both first-half scoring drives. Woodley hit split end Carlos Carson on a 24-yard pass play to help set up fullback Jude Hernandez 6-yard TD run midway through the opening period.

Woodley lofted a 10-yard scoring pass to splitback Jerry Murphree in the second quarter. Woodley got the Tigers third score following a third- deadlock. The Arkansas athlete took a 2-Love lead but Cannon fought back, putting Pascale out of control and on the defensive with a leaping, diving, tiebreaking performance. Now facing a one set to none deficit, Pascale again formed a 2-0 lead in his favor as a Cannon knee-skinning lunge could not compensate for Pascales quickness. Each player then captured a game, Cannon's coming on a serve that was too hot for Pascale to handle after having played him to a duece.

Nevertheless, Pascale retained the 3-1 margin in the second set. Pascale went on to capture the set 6-4, though Cannons running, jumping, never-say-die attitude brought him within one point bn two occasions. Still, the top seeded players complete control of the game, along with his quick, grunting serve, made him nearly invinceable for the time being. On the other hand, Cannon, though he lost that set, seemed to have found the missing ingredient for victory at the end of the second frame. He diplayed new-found confidence and authority as the match went into the third and final set.

The first game went to Cannon 40-15 via his lighting-fast serve. Pascale evened it up with his never changing style of play that called for a slow calculated advancement towards the net while sending his opponent running back and forth across the width of the court. A Colorado fumble on the Buff 9-yard line led to another touchdown, on a 1-yard plunge by tailback Hokie Gajan, and freshman tailback Jessie Myles added two more scores on short-yardage runs. For the second straight game, Colorado had no rushing attack. The Buffaloes netted just 21 yards on 32 carries, and the passing attack wasn't much better. Quarterbacks Bill Solomon and Pete Cyphers combined to complete nine of 33 throws and were intercepted four times.

LSU held the Buffs to 130 yards in total offense, while the Tigers were themselves rolling up 379 total yards, in-cluding231 on the ground. Pascale fought back to duece, then Cannon the advantage with a serve that went by so quickly Pascale did not even have time to raise his raquet: A third duece ensued and was followed with the Louisiana native grabbing the advantage again.

This time Peseale reacted too slowly to another Cannon serve and could not clear the net on his return. Afterwards, spectators could hear Pascale sarcastically reprimanding himself really good, Ravmond! Yet Raymond tied it up once more when Cannon returned a high shot with a leap that was reminicent of a N.B.A. basketball game, which of course put him completely out of position for the next return. Cannon went ahead 3-2 with a backpeddling, jumping hit that noone could have returned. The next game was also Cannon's as he baited Pascale to the net then volleyed past him.

Cannon claimed a third one in a row while streaching for shots that put him almost parrallel to the ground. The next point was hotly contested as the combatants went through four dueces before Pascale came out ahead when Cannon finished the game sliding flat on his back for an attempted return. Conditions were poor, and so was Augies mood. USL Coach Augie Tammariello was, to say the least, heated after his Ragin Cajuns bowed 28-20 to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane before 17,500 fans Saturday night at Skelly Stadium.

The stadium lights blew a fuse and, after a 45-minute delay, the game went on with only half of the playing surface illuminated and both teams having to get rewarmed up. By LOUIS J. RESWEBER Advertiser Sports Writer It was quiet, confident, professionalism versus hustling, athletic, inspiration. This time, the former won. Gary Cannon outlasted Raymond Pascale in the finals of the Southern Adult Closed Tennis Tournament, concluded at the Oakbourne Country Club courts Saturday, to capture the Mens Singles Title with a dramatically hard-fought 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision. Cannon had gained a spot in the championship match by stopping Delayne Howel of Tennesee 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, Friday evening while Pascale had advanced to the finals by beating fourth-ranked Hugh Thompson from Alabama 4-6, 7-6, 6-0.

Pascale, the tourneys top seeded player from Arkansas, took an early-match upper-hand that seemed to prevail throughout the contest as he swept victories in the first three games. Cannon, a native of Batoti Rouge and the events 3 player, answered with wins in the next two games over a relentlessly fighting Pascale. Cannon scored as he rushed all the way from behind the backline to smash a Pascale bobble at the net past his opponent. Pascale came back to tally another point then Cannon outhustled his foe as the count was now 4-3 in the initial set. Cannon tied it up at 4-4 as each player almost fell trying to return the others blasts.

They proceeded to dog-fight each other to a standstill as the first set had to go into a tie breaker following a 6-6 It now becoming ooVioUd that this was to be a Cannon victory. Pascales last shot encountered the net, allowing Gary Cannon to exhaustedly walk away with the game, set and match. I got a lotta lucky breaks, the drained victor humbly explained after the match. Freshman Dwight -Purdhomme from Lafayette High clicked on nine of 17 aerials for 156 yards and two scores, cementing his promise with the club. It was a night in which the Cajun attack had a new-found verve and vigor, but had a bit too much to overcome. But, for all the excitement generated by the Cajuns in the course of their regular snaps from center, the highlight of the game for friend and foe-was the two-point conversion executed that drew USL within 21-14.

Quarterback Phillip Reynolds, in a play the Cajuns have worked on for weeks, faked into the line and in apparent frustration to the unknowing fans tossed the ball overhead while facing away from the play. Waiting there in the end zone was tieht end Mike Hoff- man, who gladly accepted the toss for the two points. It left the fans buzzing, the hometown press scrambling for details from Louisiana writers about the play, and the stadium generally jittery with the novelty of it all. That, come to think of it, was the way the game Ragin Cajuns impressed a solid Tulsa squad and its fans. "Southwestern Louisiana was a scrappy team that fought hard and was well-prepared, said Tulsa Coach John Cooper.
