on 00 all in in a A8 The Abbotsford News Thursday, June 7, 2007 All Saints solar: Let there be light "Let there be light: and there was light." When it comes to recognizable Biblical statements, these words- in which God set about creating the earth would come close to the top of any list. The staff at Mission's All Saints Anglican Church have infinitely less grandiose plans. That being said, however, it's clear this immortal phrase can be applied to their latest endeavour. According to rector Rev. Sharon Salomons.

the church is the first i in Canada to install photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity for lighting and electrical appliances. Salomons said she is "98 per cent sure" her church is the first in Canada to take the step, although the system is already operating in a church in the U.S. and another in England. The electricity savings, according to Salomons, will be approximately $300 to $400 a year. But more important than that, she said, will be the message it sends.

"The biggest impact is to be an inspiration to others and say, all make small little changes but together we can make big chang. es. There are things we can all do and hopefully people will feel inspired," she said. The battery will also enable the church to provide some emergency power in the event of power outages. she explained. while adding that any unused power from the new system can be sent back to the grid. All Saints, together with five other churches in the Diocese of New Westminster, were chosen out of 80 churches to receive cash for environmental projects.

The other five churches. Salomons explained, have installed solar panels that will be used to heat water rather than generate electricity A blessing for the new solar panels will be held on June 10 at 11:15 a.m. According to Salomons, the local fire department will use equipment to lift her up to reach the solar panels, at which point she will sprinkle them with holy water.
