Canon Donates Ground From the time of his election to the board until his death, November 6, 1798, Col. Canon proved to be the most active member of the board of trustees, contributing much of his time and fortune to the advancement of education. In 1792 he donated the ground for, and a month later advanced the money necessary to the erection of the stone Academy building and personally supervised the project until its completion.

It was while yet functioning in this stone building that the Academy took upon itself the legal proportions of a college, and it was here that Jefferson College continued until 1818, at which time the first college building was erected adjacent to the old Canon homestead. During the same year the Academy property, with its stone building, located on the opposite side of Central Avenue from the new college building, was sold to James Allison. The next building to appear on the campus of Jefferson College School. Providence Hall was com-gymnasium of Canonsburg High School. Pdovidence Hall was completed in 1832 upon the site of the Canon home.

Following the death of Col. Canon, the greater portion of his remaining landed interests was sold by the sheriff. As a result of this action James Allison became owner of the estate. In 1800 Allison restored that portion of the estate comprising the Canon homestead to the widowed Jennet Canon for the sum of one dollar. Mrs.

Canon, in 1816, sold one and a fraction acres to the board of trustees of the college. The indenture covering this transaction conveyed the land interests only, Mrs. Canon retaining ownership of the house and spring-house. The indenture did provide, however, that she, at her own expense, must remove the spring-house at once, that the board might proceed with the erection of the "new college edifice." The Canonsburg High School, built in 1913, now occupies the site of this first college building. Mrs.

Canon continued to reside in the old home, on its original site until construction of Providence Hall was started, at which time her house was moved north, approximately 100 feet to a narrow piece of ground yet in her possession. Prior to the Academy being chartered as a college there is little in the way of high-lights in regard to the history of the Academy. On May 3, 1796 the tuition was set "at the rate of five pounds per annum." The Philo Literary Society was founded August 23, 1789; the Franklin Literary Coci-ety was founded on November 10 of the same year and on April 20. 1789 David Johnston and James Mountain were appointed teachers or "masters." On October 30, 1800 the board of trustees petitioned the legislature to establish a college at Canonsburg and on January 15. 1802 the charter was granted for Jefferson College, named for Thomas Jefferson who was president of the United States at the time.

The board of trustees met on April 27. 1802 and elected Dr. John McMillan president of the board and Craig Ritchie, secretary. Two days later they named the college's first president, Rev. John Watson, son-in-law of Dr.

McMillan. Rev. Watson, however, died on November 30 of that year, and in accordance with letters from Watson to McMillan it is doubtful if he was active in the presidency, or principalship as the college executive post was then called. The official sea! of the college was designed en April 27 with the motto: "Deo Juvante Omnia Fos-sumus." Also on the seal were the M-ords: "Jeffersoniensis Col-legii Sigillum." On November 28. 1902 the first' class was graduated from the college, numbering five men; William McMillan, Israel Pickins, Reed Bracken, Johnson Eaton and John Ray.
