All of the birds are now free-flying, but show no inclination to leave Louisiana.

This year there were about 250 young Canada geese raised by the flock in the goose pasture, and quite a few more from nests outside of the Refuge. The birds have saturated the goose pasture from a nesting standpoint, and have moved out along the ridge to nest. ALL OF THE young birds on the Refuge are banded, and no band returns have been received outside Louisiana. It seems clear evidence that this is indeed a non-migratory flock. Now the goal is to establish other such flocks across the marsh habitat of Louisiana.

Quite a bit of money is needed to accomplish this, but that would be no problem if the administration and the legislature would stop raiding the Rockefeller Fund and the Conservation Fund of millions of dollars each year. Goose hunters had better hope this succeeds. Another ominous development is that states up north of us are now short-stopping blue and snow geese in increasing numbers. It seems only a question of time, and not much of that, until the blue snow faucet is closed completely. CANADA GEESE have been on the forbidden list for Louisiana hunters for quite a few years.

The refuges and shooting grounds in Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin have stopped the southward migration of these big birds into our state, to such a point that only about 2,000 wintered with us last year. The Wild Life and Fisheries Commission made an effort to re establish this migration, by bringing young geese from those refuges to Louisiana in trucks, and hoping that they would return voluntarily the following fall. No dice! It jus, dic'n't work. Now a new approach, and one which looks mighty promising to Ted Joanen. Ted is the biologist in charge of research on Kockefeller Refuge, the 80,000 acre state preserve near Grand Chenier, and has hoped that this new program can result in a shootable population of Canadas for us within a decade or so.

THE IDEA is to establish our very own, resident, non migratory flock of Canada geese, and it is working out beyond expectations. A flock cf pinioned birds was established in a "goose pasture" on Rockefeller several years ago, and there has been an increasing amount of nesting activity ability of both to keep their offenses rolling. Come Close Manning and his Rebels made only one first down in the opening quarter and appeared unable to come close to his receivers. He missed on seven straight throws.
