USL dominated the first quarter but held only a 3-0 lead the end of the first 15 minute period. The Ragn Caiun defense kept the Mavericks baon-ed up throughout the first canto, and the Texans only had one offensive play take place inside the Cajuns 50 yard Mne, Kicked Off Southwestern kicked off to start the contest but Arlington runner Dexter Russev fumb'-l after being racked up at the UTA 38 and Steve Shea noun-el on the loose football for USL at that point. Southwestern moved to the TITA 11 yard line before Roland Surita fumbled and Sam Beavers recovered for the Mavs.

HATCHER Advertiser Sports Editor The University of Southwestern Louisiana Ragin Cajuns proved to be better mudders than the University of Texas at Arlington here Saturday night by taking a 16-0 Southland Conference football victory. The game was played in a driving rain during the first half and the ball was slippery throughout the contest.

The field, however, remained in excellent condition during the game, a tribute to design of the playing arena. Win Streak The loss ended the Mavericks win streak at one game. The Texans had defeated West Texas State 13-0 last week to end a 13-game losing streak. The Mavericks now sport a 1-4 mark for the season and are 0-1 in Southland play. The Cajuns ended a personal two game losing streak with the victory.

The Ragin Cajuns now stand with a 3-2 seasonal mark and are 1-2 in conference action. Southwesterns victory was never in doubt, as the Ragin Cajuns threw up their vaunted defense to post the shutout of the Mavericks. The defense returned to its expected excellence after faultering in the last two games. Defensive Effort Linebackers Larry Sikes and David Neustrom paced a defensive effort but linemen Leroy Booker, Leslie Vogel, Ed Chias-son and Myles Casbon swarmed Maverick runners throughout a three situation. Self gained one yard and then got two to give Cajuns a first down at the Arlington 21.

On the next play Self was thrown for a five yard loss by Sam Beavers. Juul entered the game and his first play, handed off Haik, the senior from New Iberia. Haik received superb blocking from guard Louis Age and tackle Jesse LeCompte to clear the line of scrimmage. Haik was off and running and needed one block for the touchdown. He got that block from split end Nelson Schexnayder and Haik dashed into the double stripe territory unmolested.

One Play In the first half, Arlington only had one offensive play from Caiun territory. The Cajun defenders allowed Arlington six first downs in the first half and the Texans came up with minus 13 yards rushing and 47 yards passing. USL had five first downs and 119 yards total offense, with 100 of those yards coming on the ground. Southwestern attempted onlv three passes in the first half. The Ragin Cajuns dominated the third period, but could not put any points on the score, board.

Arlington had the ball for only eight plays in the third period. USL had the ball for 23 plays during that 15 minutes of the game. Second Half Arlington kicked off to USL to start the second half and the Cajuns could not move. On fourth down USL punted, but Arlington receiver Scott High-smith fumbled the boot and Reggie Dupre recovered for the Cajuns at the Arlington 34. at rusher with 62 yards on 13 carries.

Southwesterns final score came on a 55 yard drive in five plays. Faked Option Fullback Rolando Surita gained 18 yards to get the drive underway and on a second and eight play, Juul dashed around left end, and faked the option pitch and went into the end zone with three Mavericks hanging on to his body. The Ragin Cajuns, behind a superb defensive effort, led 10-0 at the halftime. Both USL scores were set up by fine defensive plays. The three pointer was made possible when defensive end Leroy Booker grabbed a fumble out of the air and returned it eight yards to the UTA six. Set Up The touchdown was set up when cornerback Leroy Johns and tackle Leslie Vogel tackled UTA punter Randy Hooten at the Texans 32 yard line. Hooten fumbled the snap on the punt, and Vogel came roaring through and forced him to run with the ball, Vogel caught up with him the same time as Johns came up from the secondary and the two members of the Cajun Kamikaze squad sandwiched him to give the Louisianians the big break, Juul had been injured earlier in the second period and Rocky Self, the senior from San Antonio was at the controls of the Cajun offense. First Play Self rolled out on the first play and lost four yards.
