C4 Rutland Daily Herald WOOkOfld Friday, February 27, 2004 Whats Shades of Harlem in Woodstock Happening set in Rupert RUPERT On Saturday, Feb. 28, the Rupert Fire Department WOODSTOCK In celebration of Black History Month, the original Broadway production of Duke Ellingtons Sophisticated earned her tours with Belafonte and Gregory Hines. will hold a baked ham and bean supper. The meal will include smoked ham with maple syrup, mashed potatoes, green beans, apple sauce, home-baked beans and desserts. The desserts will include death bv chocolate, maple syrup bread pua-ding, Megs carrot cake and cheesecake.

Beverages will include coffee, tea, water and punch. The cost is $7 for adults, and $4 for children under 12. Children under 5 eat for free. For more information, call Debbie Baker at 394-7816. On the day of the dinner, call 394-7844.

Harry Shades of Harlem has enjoyed success in venues around the United States and the world. They have entertained in venues throughout Italy, Monte Carlo, Lithuania, Japan and at Chicagos famed New Regal Theater. Tickets cost $22 for adults and $12 for children. They are available by calling Pentangle at 457-3981. As part of Pentangles Celebrate Black History Month, Dartmouth professor Bill Cook will present a free talk on the Harlem Renaissance at 4 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 28. The film, Great Day in Harlem will also be shown at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28.

Ladies, was recruited to be the male interloper for Shades of Harlems trip down memory lane in the 1983 performance. The show was rewritten and expanded before moving to New York, where it opened for a sold out one-night only performance. Because of the shows popularity; they were invited to perform at the worid famous Village Gate on 52nd Street in New York City where they had an eight-month run. A starring role for acclaimed jazz vocalist, Branice McKenzie was created to add even more perspective to the show. McKenzies four-octave range Pentangle presents Shades of Harlem: The Cotton Club Musical at the Pentangle Town Hall Theatre in Woodstock at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 27. Shades of Harlem founder Jeree Wade will perform at the show. Wade said she created the show as a tribute to the Harlem she had heard about and longed to know while growing up as a performer after the renaissance had passed. She recruited Frank Owen to do the music, and the show was first Serformed to an enthusiastic town University audience in 1983.

Ty Stephens, who performed in Musical inspired by Dr. Seuss SAXTONS RIVER Vermont Academy students vyill present the musical Seussical on Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28, in Fuller Auditorium at 8 p.m. Inspired by the books of Dr.

Seuss, Seussical tells the strange tale of an elephant that discovers a planet on a speck of dust, of a bird that grows a tail so long she cant fly, and of a child who dares to dream. For ticket information contact Eric, Robinson at Teen Dance on Saturday There will be a Teen Dance sponsored by the Boys Girls Club -of Rutland County on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Dana Recreation Center on East Center Street in Rutland. The dance is open to teenagers age 12 to 18.

DJ George Covalla will provide music for the event. Club members pay a $2 admission fee, which includes refreshments. A current club member who brings a new member will be admitted for free. For new members, the entry fee is $10, which includes admission to the dance, refreshments and a years membership in the club. The dance will be chaperoned by parents, staff and volunteers.

There will also be a security guard. Those attending must wear school or club attire and no one will be allowed to re-enter once they leave the dance. Healing is focus of drum event Drum Journeys of Earth will present Drink at the Well: A Community Gathering for the Healing of Spirit, Mind and Body, Saturday, Feb. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m.

at Mountain Yoga, 135 North Main Rutland. The community is invited to experience the healing power of sound, rhythm and the human voice in a safe, contemplative atmosphere. A variety of sound experiences will be presented. Each one will be followed by a period of silence to give everyone time to absorb and observe the effects of sounds chosen specifically for their healing qualities. Instruments used will include drum, flute, hand percussion and voice.
